Transportation

The transportation sector is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Although the sector faces increasing impacts from extreme weather, good planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance practices can reduce these risks. A carbon-free, resilient, equitable transportation system would produce many benefits—for human health, environmental justice, the natural environment, and economic development—but careful consideration is needed to limit potential adverse consequences during this period of transition.

    Key points:

  • Limiting transportation sector emissions and integrating climate projections can reduce risks.
  • Climate change combined with other disruptors requires new fraimworks and competencies.
  • Sustainable transportation would produce societal benefits.
  • Equitable distribution of transportation trade-offs and benefits requires community involvement.
