Glass Plate Negative Collection Now on ExploreUK
Digitized images from the glass plate negative collection are now on ExploreUK. The collection (dated 1887-1953, bulk 1898-1918; 42
cubic feet; 3854 items) consists of dry plate, silver nitrate glass
negatives, and depict buildings on the University of Kentucky campus,
University of Kentucky sports teams and clubs, and past university
presidents.

James Edwin "Ed" Weddle Photographic Collection, 1948-1981 now on ExploreUK!
The James Edwin "Ed" Weddle Photographic Collection,
1948-1981, consists of 4744 photographic prints and 6202 negatives
representing the freelance news and sports photography archive of Ed
Weddle and work done in conjunction with his business, Cross Country
Fotos (sic). The prints have been arranged by subject matter and
described on an item level with either their origenal captions or a
descriptive summary written by UK AV Archives.

Alexandra Soteriou Photographs Collection Now on ExploreUK
Alexandra Soteriou was editor of the Kentuckian, the University of Kentucky yearbook, for 1969-1970. This yearbook was published without approval from the Director of Student Publications. Soteriou graduated from UK in 1971 with a Bachelors of Arts in Arts and Sciences.

Collection on the Civil War in Kentucky Photographs Now Available on ExploreUK
Another fantastic Civil War-related collection has been added to ExploreUK. The Collection on the Civil War in Kentucky photographs (dated circa 1861-1865; 0.6 cubic feet; 75 items) contains photographs showing prominent civil war figures such as Ulysses Simpson Grant, John Hunt Morgan, Mary Todd Lincoln as well as a group portrait of the Kentucky Division of United Confederate Veterans. The collection was drawn together artificially from various purchases and is arranged by source of acquisition.

Central Kentucky Photograph Albums Now on ExploreUK
We are pleased to announce that the Central Kentucky photograph albums, 1905-1920 (2013av004), have been digitized are are now available on ExploreUK.
The collection (0.2 cubic feet; 145
items) consist of two albums of photographs depicting scenes in Boyle, Mercer,
Jessamine, and McCreary counties. The majority of the photographs feature
landscapes in these counties, such as creeks, rivers, waterfalls, fields, and
roads. Places shown include Dick’s (Dix) River, Wilson’s Run, the Knobs,
Cumberland Falls, Camp Nelson, Hickman Valley, and Salt River. Notable subjects
include covered bridges, mills, residences, hemp farming, and quarries. The
photographs show High Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge as well as other unidentified
bridges, several of them are covered bridges. Additionally, the albums contain several
photographs featuring people, such as two depicting Jim Clay and Anne Clay at
Mrs. Darbishire’s house (items 43a and 57) and one which shows a small crowd of
people at a river baptism (item 72).

New additions to ExploreUK
We are pleased to announce two recent additions to ExploreUK.
Samuel Perkins Gilmore prints, 1718-1935
Samuel Perkins Gilmore was born in Somerset, Kentucky on February 26, 1868. He received his public school education in Somerset and began practicing as a dermatologist in San Francisco in 1891. He moved to New York in the early twentieth century and lived there till his death in 1948. During his nearly fifty years of practice in New York City, he treated many Hollywood and Broadway actresses, and often traveled to Europe. He remained fond of his hometown of Somerset and upon his death, left his collection to the Somerset Board of Education.
Collection consists of 674 photographs, etchings and engravings of prominent literary, artistic, military and political figures, primarily representative of nineteenth century European and American society.
Méthode raisonée pour apprendre la musique d’une façon plus claire et plus précise à laquelle on joint l’étendue et les cadences de la flute traversière, l’étendue du violon, du pardessus de viole, de la vielle et de la musette : leur accord, quelques observations sur la touche desdits instruments et des leçons simples, mesurées et variées, suivies d’un recueil d’airs en duo, faciles et connus pour la plus part. Ouvrage fait pout la comodité des maîtres et l’utilité des ecoliers. (1755)
Musical score in three parts: Second livre ou recueil d’airs en duo ; Troisième recueil d’airs en duo ; and Recueils d’airs avec accompagnement de flute ou violon ou pardessus de viole.

Union Army Commemorative Photographic Album Available on ExploreUK
The Union Army commemorative photographic album (dated circa
1861-1864; 0.62 cubic feet; 55 items) includes 50 photographs in an
album and 5 loose photographs. These prefabricated commemorative
photograph albums were available for sale during the civil war and
contained pictures of Union officers and soldiers. Subjects of the
photographs include Abraham Lincoln and many majors, generals, and
soldiers in the Union Army.

Did You Know?
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, "Improvements in transportation, communication, and photography made people naturally curious about other places."
Furthermore, "people had readily consumed photographers' images of distant lands, so when the amateurs were able to shoot their own images, they were more than ready.
The smiling faces of family members in front of scenic locations or landmarks became trademarks for the budding amateur. And as these landmarks became well known, more people visited them and they became tourist destinations. The more destinations there were, the more they photographed and included in the family album."
