Lifted Index

Lifted Index

Lifted Index is a measure of the instability of the atmosphere which takes into account the low level moisture

availability and provides guidance on thunderstorm potential and tornadoes.

> 0Stable...but weak convection possible for LI = 1 to 3 if strong lifting is present.
-1 to -3Marginally unstable. Thunderstorms possible. - trigger needed
-4 to -5Moderately unstable. Thunderstorms probable.
-6 to -7Very unstable. Strong/severe thunderstorms likely. Tornadoes possible
Less than -9Extremely unstable. Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes likely
