About the Fairfax County 250th Commission

The United States Semiquincentennial Commission (www.America250.org) was established by an act of Congress in July 2016 for the purpose of inspiring all Americans and each American to participate in our greatest milestone ever—the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. In recognition of the importance of this commemoration, particularly given Virginia’s central role in the revolutionary movement, an ad hoc group of individuals in Virginia begin meeting in 2018 for the purpose of considering how Virginia could play in central role in the 250th.

This group initiated the effort which ultimately resulted in the establishment of Virginia’s American Revolution 250 Commission (va250.org). In response to a call to action from the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission for all Virginia jurisdictions to establish 250th work groups, Fairfax County was the first jurisdiction in the Commonwealth of Virginia to do so. Fairfax County will strive to be a leader in creating and hosting appropriate events associated with the 250th, as well as supporting the Commonwealth’s efforts to commemorate the 250th.

Through a Board Authorization on July 27, 2021, the Semiquincentennial Work Group has transitioned to the Fairfax County 250th Commission, which will remain in existence through June 30, 2027.
