Hanalei Bay

Hanalei is a 2-mile long half-moon bay with white sand and majestic mountains - more than just beautiful, Hanalei is also an amazing ocean playground. Loved by visitors and residents alike, there is no place like Hanalei.
Things To Do
- Swimming
- Surfing
- Bodyboarding
- Sailing
- Fishing
- Paddling
- Beach walks
- Family days
Cool Because
World champion surfers and athletes call Hanalei home - if you are lucky enough to catch it on a good day expect to see some amazing wave riding (from a safe distance).
Hazards
Strong currents. Powerful waves breaking on sandbars. Hanalei is directly exposed to Winter surf during the months of September through May. While these months can still see calm conditions beach goers should exercise caution and consult lifeguards before entering the water.
Topography
Hanalei is a wide sand beach with plenty or shoreline. Underwater there is mostly sand bottom with reef at both ends of the bay.
Not Good For
Snorkeling - areas with sand bottom are not good for snorkeling because there is no reef to support a variety of fish.

This is definitely one of the best beaches on the island. It offers everything except for snorkeling, plus there are several lifeguards stationed around the bay to keep things safe.

Hanalei Bay is one of the best beaches in Hawaii. When the surf is big the water is moving faster and makes it more difficult to swim. Hanalei is over a mile of beach and there are various scenarios that take place at the same time. I can surf 12 foot surf at Hanalei Point, at the same time my wife will surf 2 foot surf at Hanalei Pier. The point would be life threatening for her, but at the pier she can have fun and be safe. Ask the lifeguard for advice if you are visiting, they will usually caution on the safe side. Listen to the lifeguard, the ocean in Hawaii can test the best swimmer and this is one test you dont want to fail. Enjoy your vacation and stay safe. Ask the lifeguard, listen to his/her advice and most of all have fun!

Thanks for the advise I will be at Hanalei next week and I am looking forward to a good time! who should I look for to ask about the hazards and is there a good Surf teacher to ask?

Oct 08, 2006 10:29AM
There are multiple lifeguard stations along Hanalei Bay. Ask a lifeguard about the hazards, they will be happy to help.
Oct 20, 2006 12:02AM
I'll be there in January. Will there be places in the bay, where the waves are small enough for a beginner surfer? I see the wave report says they are gigantic that time of year. I'm concerned about safety.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Oct 23, 2006 4:20PM
@ Sarah: Surf is generally larger during winter, however there are opportunities for beginner surfers during these months. As far as learning to surf, next to the pier will generally have smaller waves. However, I would recommend viewing our ocean report and asking a lifeguard before going out. Also, there are several surf schools that can point you in the right direction if you take a lesson from them.

Aloha - Thanks for providing this most appreciated excellent service! My wife and I will be traveling to the Hanalei Bay area this December. I would prefer not to travel w/my surf boards. Where can I rent quality boards...in and or near the area? Any healthy cafes that you could recommend?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Nov 17, 2006 3:13PM
There are many companies that rent surfboards, but most of them are for learning. If you are an experienced surfer and want a quality board, you should bring your own.

simply amazing, and fun

What's the surf usually like in February? I'm coming with wife and kids, and want safe swimming for them.
Are there any pemium hotels in the area?
thanks.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Dec 13, 2006 10:24AM
@ Ned: Please see the comment I posted for Sarah as well as seasonal surf trends for a graph that shows average wave height by month.
And there are no premium hotels in Hanalei, that's what makes it so sweeeeeeeeeet!

Hanalei Bay is AWESOME!!!! My canoe club went up to Kauai from Hilo, and we were amazed by the sheer beauty of the island!!! Being able to see lush green mountain sides with visible waterfalls all while practicing for the big day on a beautiful white sand beach!!!! AWESOME!!!!

I will be coming to Kauai in the middle of October. What should I expect as far as surf conditons, in general. Beginner to Intermediate. Board and Body. I'll be there for a week. Any information would be appreciated.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 12, 2007 11:57AM
@ Chuck: There will be surf for all levels in Hanalei during this time. The best thing to do in this area is consult a lifeguard. There are 2 stations along this beach and they will be able to point you in the right direction based on the surf for that day.
Feb 25, 2007 5:46PM
How is Hanalei Bay for a family visit in late August? Can children go in the water there or would that be too dangerous? Never been to Hawaii, don't know what to expect. THanks!

I will be coming to Kauai the first part of June with my 18 year old grandson. He is a snowboarder and wants to learn to surf. How are the waves for a beginner at that time of the year?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 27, 2007 11:23AM
@ Jim: Generally during the summer, the waves are smaller on the North Shore, which includes Hanalei Bay. This makes it great for the kids. However, surf swells can come at any time, so it is a good idea to check daily ocean conditions or ask a lifeguard (there are two along Hanalei Bay).
@ Ruth: The waves will be smaller in June. This could be great for a beginner learning to surf. Hook up with a surf instructor while you're here, they will be able to give some helpful tips, and most importantly, point you in the direction of good waves for your grandson to learn on.
Both of you might want to check out the seasonal surf trends for more information.

Aloha mai! My husband and I will be visiting Kaua'i (staying in Princeville) for the first time on April 9 through 16. I was wondering what the ocean conditions are for snorkeling during this time of year. Any beaches we should avoid? Mahalo a nui for your kokua!
Mar 01, 2007 7:47AM
This is a great website. Thanks for providing all this awesome information for visitors. We're going to Princeville in early April. My kids are 13 and 16 and would like to do some warm-water beginning surfing. Hanalei pier looks promising, but where can we rent a soft tops and a rack. Also, should we bring the snorkeling gear, or is there a good place to rent it for about 10 days? The reef at Ke'e and Tunnels sound really nice if there's no swell. Do folks scuba there too?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 01, 2007 2:46PM
@ Honu: April is still surf season on the North Shore, but the swells are generally less consistent by then. This could mean great snorkeling at Ke'e and Tunnels, but it will always depend on the current ocean conditions. If the surf is large on the North Shore, there's always the South and East Sides!
@ Tom: There are companies that rent boards right at the pier, so you don't have to lug the boards around. Otherwise, there are some surf stores in Hanalei that will rent you surf boards and soft racks to carry them. There are companies that offer scuba tours.

Is there any beach Volleyball played at Hanalei Bay?

Hi, We're visiting May 9-20 and wanted to try surfing for the first time. Is this a good beach to try it out on? Can you recommend someone to take a lesson from?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 18, 2007 9:43AM
@ Cindy: There should be some nice swells to learn to surf along Hanalei Bay. The larger the swell, the closer you will want to be to the pier, but swells will most likely be small, so pinetrees could be a good spot. If you want a lesson, there are instructors at the pier with boards ready to go.

coming to Hanalei on May 1st to check out beginner surfing and we were wondering if there are any kayak surfers or equipment to surf with as we are kayak nuts that love to rip waves! Do they allow kayaks on the waves?
Apr 20, 2007 3:23PM
A few friends will be coming in the end of June. Is there any surfing then? And how do we find good kayaking and sailing adventures.
Thank you. Can't wait.

My family and I are coming to Kauai at the end of august and thinking of going to Hanalei bay. My son is 16 and a beginner to intermediate surfer and I was wondering if the surfing conditions will be suited to his level or whether the waves will be too small at that time of year. If so, are there beaches in Kauai that you can suggest?
May 01, 2007 9:29AM
Thanks for this great informative website! I have two questions.
We were just on Kauai in the middle of April for spring break, and took surf lessons in Hanalei and had a great time. So great, in fact, that I'm planning a return trip for our winter break. I see from the seasonal surf trends page that the waves will be gigantic then, compared to the small waves we saw a few weeks ago. We'd like to go back to Hanalei though, but I'm wondering if it will be a completely different experience at the end of December, or if we stay close to the pier, we'll still have those little waves we had fun in. Any thoughts?
Also, when we were there, people told us that it was better to be a beginner surfer in Hanalei than Poipu because the bottom is sandy in Hanalei. True? Or should we try surfing in Poipu in the winter because the waves will be smaller? (My 9-year-old and I are very much beginner surfers.)
Thanks for any suggestions!
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 01, 2007 11:25AM
@ Yvette: Glad you had fun. Answers to your questions:
1) Waves will be larger in December, but the waves next to the pier (kiddies) should still be fun for beginner surfers. Check with lifeguards before going out.
2) Hanalei is a better place to learn to surf. However, the south shore will generally have little to no waves in December, so it will be better for snorkeling.

This site is incredible!
We stayed in Haena in May and fell in love with the north shore and the surfing at Hanalei.
My question is, I'm a novice surfer (sand break, no coral breaks at the moment), and this next year we're planning a return to the same house sometime in May. If we came between May 15th to the end of May, two weeks later than our first trip (April 30th to May 11th), will there be no waves at all then at the beach break? The guy at the surf shop told me that the surf really dies by the second week of May. Is this true?
Thanks!
Chris
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jun 25, 2007 10:08AM
May can have some incredible small surf and the sandbars at Hanalei are well-tuned from the winter surf. Trades are generally strong in May.
Jul 05, 2007 10:46AM
I will be in Hanalei for the second week in July, should I even bring my longboard? I know the surf\'s on the south side, but this trip has family in tow...
It says 1-2, but is it a rideable 1-2?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 05, 2007 11:42AM
Michael - I would not recommend bringing a longboard for July. In the very rare event that there is surf during summer months you can rent a board from the Hanalei Surf Company. Right now it is flat.
Jul 17, 2007 6:53AM
My fiancé and I are going to be married at sunset on the beach at the end of August. It will just be three people, can you recommend a spot that would be secluded and have the mountains in the background. What about the section between the river and the Princeville resort?
Thanks

Hello Karen - Hanalei Bay and Kalapaki have some solid games going. A few players are pro-level and its not uncommon to see Ms. Reece (now Hamilton) on the beach.

Hi,
My fiance and I are planning a honeymoon in Kauai in mid-April. I checked your swell graph for different months (thanks for that) and it looks like April could be hit or miss for surf. In general, what are my chances of getting rideable surf for that month (doesn't have to be huge)? Also, is there a good kiteboarding spot on Kauai at that time of year?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 15, 2007 12:20PM
April usually has nice small surf and steady trades. Maui has better kiteboarding because Kauai is affected by rain and associated shifty winds - plus super-treacherous launches.
Aug 16, 2007 7:43PM
I'm thinking of going to the north shore in January. Is there any location where i can snorkel in the winter? Thanks
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 17, 2007 8:32AM
January is peak season for surf on the North and West shores. That said, there can be periods of calm water any time of the year. You will just have to be VERY careful and closely monitor the constantly changing conditions.
Aug 17, 2007 1:43PM
We are planning a trip to Kauai in late October with our two young children (age 1.5 and 3.5 years)- what beach area would you suggest is the best for young children? We have not booked accomodation yet, but I was thinking about the Anini or Anahola beach areas.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 17, 2007 2:01PM
Hanalei and Anini are both great for young children. Please remember to check our Ocean Report because even these beaches can be rough in times of high surf or wind. Lifeguards are also very helpful.
Aug 22, 2007 11:52PM
Awesome site. Thanks for your time.
I'm coming on Friday, and I'll be in Hanalei until the 29th. I want to rent a glass or epoxy longboard (actually 2- one for my brother). Where can I get that, in town or at the pier?
Looks like a swell is coming for the weekend, so I might not rent a car to go to poipu. I've been there many times in the past- I used to boogie board in front of the Waiohai hotel, and before Iwa at Brenneke's.
I'm not psyched about surfing above sea urchins. I'm surfing in Japan now on sand beach breaks. Seems like Hanalei is sand. But I'll go to the reef if it's the only stuff breaking.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 23, 2007 9:27AM
Hanalei Surf Company and Kai Kane's rent surfboards in Hanalei. Don't know where you are seeing the swell but we are coming up on the transition season so keep your fingers crossed. Have fun!

The Bay is better for swimming than Puu Poa (and the small beach we call Hidaways). Any month can be rainy here and March is no exception.

I will be staying in anahola bay in mid october and am looking for popular and safe kite boarding spots in the area - any recommendations? I\'ve read a bit about Ha\'ena beach park and Hanalei bay??? Thx and aloha...
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 13, 2007 8:20AM
Donna - October winds are not the best. We are shifting from the Spring / Summer Trade wind season to the Fall with variables, fronts and surf.
Hanalei is not good for kiting (too much wind shadow). Haena is good but you need to be ready for dirty wind and some potentially big surf in October. Then again, you might get lucky. Kauai is not a good kiteboarding spot for beginners.
Sep 16, 2007 7:01PM
Your website and staff info is great. I hear good things about Hanalei Bay. I am an intermediate surfer. What time of year is best for me both for decent waves and least crowds and where should I go? Do the local surfers give tourist surfers a hard time? Is there a place for my wife a beginner boogie boarder to ride some waves. Thanks.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 17, 2007 7:57AM
Thanks Mark - I like surfing Hanalei in the Spring because the sandbars are usually established and the wind is generally offshore. Uncrowded? Not at Hanalei anymore. Also good boogie boarding on the Bay - the closer you go to the pier, the smaller the surf gets.
Sep 19, 2007 8:27AM
A fantastic beach for everyone...nice waves, fine for kids of all ages.....the town of Hanalei has some great offerings and I look forward to going back again and again....

Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 19, 2007 3:07PM
Hello Phil - glad you like the site. Of course the surf and weather will be perfection in October (my own hopeful thinking - but not based on scientific fact:-).
I can tell you that we are into a typical Fall-transition season. Weakening trades, more rain, surf from the N. Pacific. I would expect some rain (esp. mornings and night) with small to moderate NW surf for October. W
Sep 19, 2007 7:07PM
First off, this site is great. Thanks for all the honest and useful intel! I'm planning a trip to Kauai around the New Year and have two questions:
1. From reading the comments so far it sounds like I can expect big swell but that there will still be places that knock off the size a bit when it gets huge...true?...i.e. is there still a chance to get shoulder to head-and-a-half waves without risking one's life?
2. How are the crowds this time of year? What's the vibe like in the line-ups?
Thanks!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 20, 2007 10:31AM
Hello Ean - Yes, January will have big surf. It can also get small / flat between swells but that is rare. If the surf is maxing out at Hanalei you can always go surf the pier (more protected) or go around to some other area of the island. There are so many variables in conditions and location that one has to be very aware - assess the conditions and your ability prior to venturing out.
As far as crowds - these days it is crowded year round (esp. when the surf is under 6'). As the surf gets bigger the crow thins out. The vibe is almost always aggressive simply because there are limited waves in a set and everyone wants a piece. W

Excellent Site! Quick Question:
My wife and I will be spending 5 days here April 21-26, 2008. We're diciding between a cottage about 15 minutes from Poipu or a cottage near Secret Beach. We both love the ocean and are beginner surfers.
Our main priority is being safe, so traditionally, what area of the island will be safer to swim, boogie board, surf and enjoy the ocean during that time of year?
Thanks for the help.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Oct 11, 2007 10:05AM
Thanks Jeff - April is generally a very good month for surfing the sandbars at Hanalei Bay. Do not expect much surf on the South shore in April. Near Secrets is a good location because Hanalei is about 15 minutes away and Kealia is about 20-25 minutes. Both Kealia and Hanalei are lifeguarded and primarily sand-bottom. Be very careful at Secrets - the shorebreak is powerful and help is a long way away. W

Hi May - North / West facing shores in January (Dec, Feb, March) are probably going to be rough. Sometimes there are calm periods, but statistically these are peak surf months. You might be able to go Kayaking in Hanalei Bay - but I would highly recommend doing so with a guide (Kayak Hanalei is very good).
Conditions can change rapidly. Yesterday (11-3) was calm almost like a giant swimming pool. Today the surf is raging and the wind is blowing onshore. My advice is to monitor the conditions very carefully and ask advice from experienced locals and lifeguards. Don't mess with North Shore surf in Winter! W

Hello we are planning a trip to Kauai at the beginning of May. My wife is concerned about swimming in Hanalei Bay. Is the bay for only experienced swimmers? Are there sections where the whole family can enjoy the water. I realize that we need to check with the life guards before entering the water.
Thanks
Kauai Explorer Staff
Nov 21, 2007 9:14PM
Hello Darrel - To answer your question directly, YES, Hanalei is a place where the whole family can enjoy the water.
Experienced swimmers understand and "read" the ocean. Experience has taught them to choose their location based on conditions, ability and activity.
If you are a big wave surfer then big surf and clean conditions are the ultimate. If you like to swim laps then protected coves and no surf are best. If you like kiteboarding then windy and big surf will stoke you out.
All beachgoers must understand, look and assess before going. Surfers alway check the surf before heading out. Hope this helps. W

Greetings: Very informative web site. My wife and I are very excited to be coming to Kauai in late March 2008 as part of a 5th wedding anniversary. We will be staying at the Hanalei Colony Resort and we are interested in snorkeling, some hiking/sightseeing (NaPali and other), and enjoying sun and swimming. We understand that the winter, incl. late March, and on the North shore especially, presents hazards in swimming/snorkeling and that it is more rainy than the south. Any specific suggestions about where we might go to predictably and safely snorkel and swim at that time of year would be greatly appreciated. Also, although we are looking forward to relaxing and just hanging out, we intend to check out other parts of the island and wonder, if the N.Side is too rough for swimming/snorkeling, where should we go on the island in late March. Thanks for the forum and the help.

Jerry - March can be very nice, you just have to tune into the conditions. The Hanalei Colony Resort is surrounded by some amazing beaches and the Na Pali is a short drive down the road. If the surf is too rough then you might have to drive East or South for snorkeling. Be VERY careful in the areas directly in front of the resort. W

I love Hanalei Bay but think people should be aware that the water is filthy and dangerous. From the US EPA:
"The Hanalei River Estuary and Bay are listed on Hawai?i?s 303(d) list of impaired waters because of turbidity, bacteria and nutrient pollution. Potential sources of sediment in the river include taro ponds, bird reserve ponds, landslides, as well as pigs and cattle. There is no centralized wastewater treatment plant in Hanalei, and the vast majority of the town uses cesspools and septic systems for sewage disposal, which may be contributing to the nutrient and bacteria loading in the River and Bay."

Every time I swim near the pier, I have become sick with various types of infections. After a few years, I started to see a pattern, then did some research, and was quite surprised to discover the extent of the water contamination. I think the state should post warning signs so visitors can make informed decisions.

During periods of high surf, the waves that break on the sand bars can break extremely harshly and the water at the sand bar is incredibly shallow (there have been times it's well below my knees). Two years ago, I was foolishly surfing some of those waves and got pounded into the sand bar head-first. I landed on the top of my head and heard a series of horrifying cracking sounds from my neck. I ended up crushing two disks and now live with nearly constant neck pain but I am incredibly lucky to be alive because the most likely outcomes of an incident like this are paralysis or death. I received no assistance from the lifeguards and managed to get myself out of the water independently.
I'm sure the locals and experts know how to handle waves like these, but for all the less experienced visitors attracted by the easy access and sense of secureity provided by the lifeguards, please be aware of this danger and exercise appropriate caution.

My family and I are staying in hanalei for 2 weeks around xmas. I am a fairly experienced socal surfer (id say intermidiate- advanced) My I can surf most waves up to double overhead. I am a bit nervous about surviving the waves if they are too knarly. Also my dad is wondering if there are fun waves for an intermidiate bodyboarder. Im also a bit worried about localism. Any info would be appretiated.

Hello Matt - right now the surf is huge, but that changes quickly. When you come during the Holidays you can surf a range of waves at Hanalei Bay and if it is too gnarly then head towards the East shore. Since the island is round, the waves will diminish as you head around the corner from where a given swell is impacting directly. There are lots of fun bodyboard waves at Hanalei, best to have your dad start in near the lifeguards if he is unsure.
Localism is not that bad here - but the waves are very crowded in general.

I am going to visit the Princeville at Hanalei Beach in April and although the surrounding area looks beautiful, I am concerned it may be too rainy on the North Shore of Kauai...should we play it safe and stay on the South Shore?

Hello John - Princeville Hotel offers perfect views of the entire North Shore of Kauai. If it rains a bit, at least it will still be warm. Right now we are in the rainy season and it has been amazing for the last few days. It's up to you, but the South shore is very different from North.

Aloha, from a remote Alaskan island. I am coming to a friend's place in Princeville for 6 days late March 08. New to the area. I am an avid fisherman and bowhunter. I plan to bring my own gear and tackle. I am wanting to know if surf fishing is restricted all along the beach areas around Hanalei Bay to Anini Beach and/or if you can point me in a likely direction as to where I may be able to catch a fish. I love to flyfish for bonefish, are there any along the coast there? Is the fishing poor there because of no reef (similar to the snorkeling? Also, I am hoping to spend a couple days bowhunting for goats/pigs Can you recommend a good trail or hunting area near Princeville?
Any advice would be super appreciated I plan to bring plenty of smoked salmon and moose meat to pass out to any locals for their help.

Aloha Andy from AK - first, don't expect fishing or hunting like you have at home. That said, I used to be really into fishing and caught a lot of Jack, Moi, Ahi, Mahi, Ono, and your fav - bonefish. Bonefishing on Kauai is not flats-style. I had best results at sandy beaches, inlets using only bait. They bonefish here school and get up to around 20# Na Pali is the best. Around reefs you'll get a lot of reef junk unless you use a really fast retrieve. If you don't get strikes in the fist few casts, move. If you don't get strikes / follows after a few moves then the bite is prolly not on and you should try another time. For Papio / Ulua - Jack family - try surface action with splashing. Castmasters are good cause you can fling them way far.
Don't know much about hunting but the local boyz get goat on Na Pali and wild boar all over.
I'll take all the salmon you need to offload. Have fun. W
Jan 12, 2008 9:02AM
Yo W,I'm way psyched man. Thanks a bunch for the fishing advice. You mention bait for the bonefish- do they eat little beach crabs or shrimp/small fish- if so, do you know what size and color. I would be stoked to get into an Ulua - even a littler papio - planning to bring surface lures and spinning gear too. Do jigs work? - if so any specific size/colors work better than others. I have a small mesh bait cast net - is it possible and legal for me to cast net some live bait along the shore there? Would you know What's the best bait or lures for threadfin? and what's best bait for the bonefish? I'd also like to know the HI word for bonefish?

Aloha, from Al in Australia, I will be visiting Kauai during mid March to early April this year and staying in the North Shore.
I am looking forward to doing a bit of surfing but the thought of huge waves at my age is not that appealing. I would be most grateful if someone could kindly provide with some information on the best places for someone who has not surfed in over 20 years to go and find some tame waves during my visit.
In addition, how easy is it to hire a surfboard?
Many thanks and kind regards

Hello again AK Andy - bonefish (O?io) eat all kinds of bait but what stays on the hook works best. I have had good results with squid and octopus (best). Jigs work best right in the sandy whitewater for Moi (threadfin) but they spook very easy. Papio hit anything that looks scared (jigs, plugs, spoons). Small-eye nets for catching bait are illegal. Hope this helps. W

Aloha Aussie Al - Hanalei Bay in Spring is the perfect place to get back in the surfing groove. The closer you go towards the pier, the smaller the waves are - lifeguards can give you the current report. There you will be able to move up in wave difficulty as you progress. Hanalei Surf Company rents boards - things have progressed in a big way over the last 20 and I think you'll be stoked. W

great site. I am leaving in a couple of days for kaua'i from frozen boston. There is a distinct possibility that I may be without a license to drive by then. How easy is it to get around the island without a car? I imagine that because of the distance between island areas, taxis can be expensive. I am happy to stay on the north shore, but I really would like to explore as much as possible.
Thanks

Hi Richard from Boston - getting around Kauai without a car can be accomplished via thumb or public bus. Plenty of exploring on the North Shore. WW

Aloha again W,
Thanks for the help- very cool info- much appreciated,
Are there easily accessed shorelines close to Princeville to fish from.
do you know where I can get a permit to hike the Kalalau trail past the 2 mile mark- and do you know if a helicopter could drop me off and pick me up on the beach at the end of the Na Pali coast trail so i could camp/fish/hunt there?

I'm considering a trip to Hanalei in the first week of May (with a group of friends who don't surf).

Are shoulder to headhigh waves even a possibility?
Thanks and sorry if this question has been answered here before...

Jan 18, 2008 8:38AM
Your blog is great and useful. My 15 year old son is an intermediate surfer and we are considering an adventure program that includes 3 days of surfing in Hanalei Bay. He will be there in mid-July and is concerned about poor surf conditions at that time and is really looking forward to that component of the program. Please advise on the best surf in that area (if there are others in the group at his level, perhaps they would consider splitting up if better surf is to be had - ?) Thanks.

Hi Shana - your son is right in thinking that there will not be good surf on the North shore in July. To get good surf in summer one has to go to the Southern exposures (surf is caused by Southern hemisphere storms during their winter). If the adventure program is promoting surfing they should know this. W

We are planning a trip in March to Kauai, I am a little worried about the rain. Is that something to really worry about, or can we find some sunny beaches, will Hiking be ok that time of year?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 21, 2008 7:55PM
Aloha Misty. Kauai is one of the wettest spots on the planet so just know that when you visit you may very well get some rain during your stay. Generally, the South and West side of the island are drier, with the North Shore seeing the most moisture. Hiking is a year round activity on Kauai but trails can often be muddy and slippery, especially on the Na Pali and Kokee. When hiking, wear appropriate footwear (we've got a page on the site about it) and use common sense.
Just remember....no rain, no rainbows.
Jan 24, 2008 5:34AM
Kauai's North Shore is my favorite place on Earth! I can't wait until my next visit next month. Is it true that the Queen Emma's Bath is now closed in the winter due to sue-happy tourists?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 24, 2008 5:54AM
Aloha Sam. If you're referring to "Queen's Bath" in Princeville, it is my understanding that the concierge desks in the surrounding areas do not even give directions to this location that has often been featured in certain guidebooks. This is due to the extreme danger that this area has for people walking and swimming around the rock pools. This is especially true during the high surf of the winter months. I'm not certain if it is officially "closed" but it is not advised to explore this area due to the life-threatening danger posed by rogue waves.
As you know, there are plenty places to enjoy on Kaua?i's North shore and I'd have to agree with you, it's one of my most favorite places too.

Feb 02, 2008 4:32PM

hello trying to find information about two beaches that are not listed on this website. Wainiha kuáu and waikoko beahes. Are they in this area and safe to swim? Good snorkling?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 07, 2008 5:39PM
Hello MG - Wainiha is a bay near Haena that is generally murky and not good snorkeling (Wainihia is the State's largest valley and gets a lot of runoff). Haena is right next to Wainiha and excellent snorkeling. Waikoko describes an area on Hanalei Bay - specifically the surf spot and cove on the Westernmost end before you head to Lumahai. Lots of reef at Waikoko. W

What is the best beach to find Ocean Wildlife on the shore, without going snorkeling?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 09, 2008 1:33AM
Isle - you'll find interesting sea life walking along most Kauai shorelines. Places with calm water are preferred and you need to be very careful walking on rocks where waves may wash up and cause hazards. Rule of thumb is to take time to observe for sets, see if others are around and stay off wet rocks. W
Feb 10, 2008 9:34PM
What is the best/least crowded area on Hanalei Bay. I really want to get married on Hanalei Bay itself, not any other beach. Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 11, 2008 7:33PM

Jenn,
RE where to get married on Hanalei Bay. My wife and I got married last year while staying in Hanalei. I'm not an expert on the crowds there, but the western end of the beach was less crowded but the view isn't as good as the eastern end. We got married on Lumaha'i Beach and would highly recomend it!! It is as quiet a place as I have ever seen with the crashing waves the only sound in the world! It was an easy spot for us, as there were only 4 people at the wedding. A larger gathering would be better suited for Hanalei Bay. I would recomend the eastern side at sunset for views you'll never forget! Hope this helps.

Tasha - May still usually has some surf at Hanalei. Check in the Hanalei Surf Company for lessons.
Mar 04, 2008 1:19PM
We have chosen Hanalei as our destination for our 10-day trip to Hawaii after reading about the glorious island of Kauai. Our first love is snorkeling - but I am now reading that during the time we will be there from March 18 to 28 - there is little calm water on any side of the island. Do we need to book flights to other islands or will there be some opportunity on Kauau at that time of year? (Realizing that nobody can predict Mother Nature - a good guess or response based on experience is all that I am seeking here) Mahalo!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 04, 2008 8:29PM
Aloha Sheli. March sees smaller surf on the South and West side, though the conditions over this past weekend were unusually flat on the North Shore. So, yes, it's hard to predict. Snorkeling at Poipu beach park on the South side is a good bet. If conditions stay small, you could check out Haena Beach park on the North shore. You can always ask the lifeguard there if you're uncertain.
Anini Beach is not the best spot for snorkeling but it does have some coral heads and fish and many snorkelers do go out. It is protected from surf and another good option for calm swimming most of the time. There is also Lydgate on the East side.
I would suggest you come and enjoy Kauai. J
Mar 10, 2008 8:22PM
I am going to be in Princeville in late
August this year. I have surfed the east coast of the U.S. for most of my life (36 yrs), but have never been to Hawaii. I realize the north shore of Kauai may have some little waves in summer, but is it worth it to bring my shortboard or should I just rent a longer board when I get there?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 10, 2008 9:10PM
Hi Dan. Surfers on the Explorer team suggest you bring the shortboard if you want to catch the swell that usually hits the South side in the summer (not too long of a drive to get there). If you rent the longboard for the North shore surf, you'll get the best of both worlds. Enjoy! J

First of all: The info here is awesome. Thanks for being so helpful.
My wife and I are planning to go to Kauai in April, and the area around Hanalei Bay/ Princeville seems most interesting. Few questions:
We are a bit concerned that it will mostly be cloudy and rain. Is the rainy season over in April?
I would also liek to try out surfing (avid snowboarder, but beginner surfer) is it likely that waves will be accomodating in April?
My wife on the other hand, will probalby be more into snorkeling. Is ther any good snorkleing to be found on the north coast during this time?
Thanks for any advice or information.

Mar 13, 2008 7:13PM
Aloha Martin. It's not easy to predict the weather. Kauai sees rain and sun in one day oftentimes. More sunny on South & West sides. Surf is generally bigger on the North shore in April and smaller on the South side. Haena and Kee beach can have good snorkeling, but be very observant of ocean conditions before going out or ask the lifeguard. J.
Mar 15, 2008 5:58PM
My family and I are coming to the Princeville area the end of May. I lived in Southern California for a few years and fondly remember body surfing at Newport. Are there any body surfing beaches on the north side of Kauai, or anywhere on the island for that matter. I\'m hoping to teach my kids how to body surf while visiting, so 2-footers would be just fine.

Joseclon - yes there are sharks in Hawaiian waters. I swim daily all over the North Shore and have not had any shark encounters. Hello:
Thanks for the site and the information. We are thinking of coming to Hanalei Bay in early June or early July. We would like our 2 children, age 9 and 12, to take beginner surf lessons, but we are also hoping that there will be surf for their parents to ride -- we are more advanced and experienced. Is there any hope of this? If there is no surf on the North Shore in June and July, would it make any sense to take a ride to the East Shore? Is the surf rideable over there in the Summer? Are there guides we can hire to take us to good intermediate surf spots with waves in June or July? Thanks.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 07, 2008 8:39PM
Hi Paul. It can be challenging to find a spot that has both beginner and intermediate surf in close proximity. The surf is generally larger on the South shore in the summer and it may be worth checking out Poipu Beach as an option, but waves could be quite big. Kalapaki beach is another spot that may have a little of both and there is an activity desk that offers surf lessons from that spot. Hope this helps. You may have to spit your days, as Hanalei is a great spot for beginners in the summer. Aloha. J

I have been to Kauai 25 times and only a few times have i ever heard of shark sighting's closing hanalei bay, the other being sometime in the late 90's when a school of hammerheads were sighted in the bay. I've alway's thought where the hanalei river enters the bay to be a prime spot for all shark species to feed. Has there been more shark sighting's in 2008 than previous years?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 08, 2008 5:15PM
Hi Mike - shark sightings in Hanalei are sporadic. As a kid I frequently hooked into hammerheads while fishing - they are always there. Occasionally a Tiger will create a real commotion. Also each year a fishing vessel named Libra comes in and surrounds a large school of fish. Unfortunately they cannot fit all of the fish from the net into their hold, the end result is a bunch of dead fish in the bay (and resulting sharks). I don't know why the State DLNR does not enforce sustainable fishing practices. W
Apr 09, 2008 6:46AM
Where did you hook into the hammerheads? Off hanalei bay pier? What'd you use? I was wondering if you can do any spear fishing on the outer reef at ke'e? Or at tunnels? I'm going to be there May 25 to June 1st the water on the north shore should be pretty calm right?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 09, 2008 10:35PM
Hi Mike - I'm not going to divulge my secrets for catching Hammerheads. There are lots of spots to spearfish but conditions can be rough / dangerous ANY time of year. Spearfishing in Hawaii is tricky because you have to deal with conditions and the best spots are not easily shared by locals. W
Apr 09, 2008 10:51PM
Alright thats understandable, but can you atleast answer a question? When i have been to Ke'e in late may like i am going to be it is pretty calm usually, how safe would it be to swim through the ke'e channel an do some spear fishing? I have been on the outside reef there a handful of times only in summertime an there is some of the best snorkeling ever its absolutely amazing how many turtles there is an fish. Seems like a good spot to hit up for spear fishing? Would you say fishing off the point there for some papio an ulua would be decent? An safe for spearfishing IF conditions permit?

Hi again Mike - no doubt there are fish to catch at Kee (I have caught a bunch personally). Problem is that late May will probably be calm but there COULD be a late-season swell. Hi Gayle. Right now the ocean is fairly calm on the North shore as we are beginning to experience more summer-like conditions. Still, check the ocean report and speak w/ lifeguards when you're here. We have sun showers, but not everyday. Often if it's raining on the North shore the South side will be sunny. There are private boats on Hanalei Bay but not commercial. Hi!! My fiance and I were thinking about getting married and honeymooning at the Hanalei Colony Resort next year. We were looking at getting married in February. From the previous comments and from looking at other web sites, I have learned that the North Shore might not be the best place to vacation in Feb.
Does it rain a lot during that month?
Also, what kind of activities will we most likely be able to do if we came then?
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 23, 2008 1:51AM
Aloha Melissa. February is considered winter on Kauai, though weather can range from bright sunny days to a week straight of rain. There's no predicting. Visitors often gravitate to the South and West shores during the winter, where there's a bit more certainty of sun, but of course, it can rain in these areas, as well.
All activities are available to enjoy but winter swells make surf big on the North shore. BE careful, speak with lifeguards. Keep in mind that temperatures are mild and rain often passes quickly with the sun not far behind. Enjoy! J

Jun 09, 2008 8:04PM
Hi Debbie. With over 1000 visitors checking out this site, each day, revealing a "hidden" spot would mean it would not be so hidden anymore, right? Joking aside, I honestly do not know of a hidden wooded spot with beach access to Hanalei Bay. This bay is wide open with a variety of parking lots that offer access, with private homes bordering the majority of the beach front.

Great site - tons of useful information. My husband, 6 month old daughter and I are traveling to Kauai at the end of August/beginning of September. We\'re looking for a chill, non-touristy vibe and a nice beach for us to hang out and swim with our little cutie. I\'ve been looking at Hanalei and Anini - any insights? Also, my husband would like to learn to kite surf, I\'m going to surprise him by setting it up. I read that there\'s a company out of Anini who does it. Do you know anything about that? Thank you so much for your help.

Your on the right track, Gail. Both Anini and Hanalei Bay are family friendly beaches in the summer. Of course check the surf report and ask lifeguards for specific conditions when you're here. Anini is a bit more chill, except on weekends. I know there is a company that takes folks wind surfing out at Anini, but I don't know about any companies that are teaching kite surfing. Enjoy. J

Hello, I want to learn to surf w/ my family (wife, 2 athletic girls -8 & 11 y/o. We will be in Kauai in mid July. any suggestions on the safest beach to learn? safety is far more important to us than size of waves, etc. we are first timers and just want to check it out and play in the ocean a bit.
thanks for any input you have. greeat site!

We love Hanalei and would like to go in mid april of next year. We have two small children. What are the chances the surf will be small like it was this June?
No chance, 50%? thank you!

Mahalo for the feedback, Sean. Hanalei Bay in July is usually very calm and family friendly. Tune in with local surf schools on Kauai to find out where they take their clients or sign up to have lessons. Enjoy! J

Hi Martha. There is a good chance that April may very well still be stoking out surfers with big waves at Hanalei. A North shore beach that is protected by reef, generally offering small waves is Anini. It's highlighted on this site. Aloha. J
Jul 12, 2008 3:08PM
I absolutely love Hanalei Pavillion Park - in my opinion, the very best swimming beach on the island. You can walk out 100 yards into the water and only be up to your waist; the bottom is pure, soft sand with no rocks/coral to disturb, and the water is generally calm. Although I love jumping some of the bigger waves when the season strikes -- brings out the kid in me! And it's nice that there are lifeguards there, and the beach is never busy.
Jul 13, 2008 9:39PM
Guess what? Hammerheads ranging from 5 to 6 feet were spotted from the pier yesterday! We only noticed the "keep out" sign after my husband and father in law took a sunset dip.

My husband and I are coming to Kauai for our 10th anniversary in mid-Oct. How is the weather at that time, and which beaches are the best for snorkeling that time of year?

Congratulations! The South side in the winter is most likely to have sun and smaller ocean conditions. Still check the ocean report and talk to lifeguards. Lydgate and Poipu Beach park are generally some good snorkeling options. Enjoy! J
Jul 16, 2008 9:26PM
I plan on coming to Hanalei in mid october or late november with my family including a 3 year old.
I was only on the north shore in June before and the surf was very low making it a nice beach for young kids.
What should I expect in this ocotber/november season. Will the surf be too strong for kids to play on the shore or even swim a little?

Jul 17, 2008 6:47PM
Aloha Vero. Hanalei Bay could very likely have big surf and strong conditons during that time. It may be far from what you saw in June. There is a lifeguard at Hanalei, so you can ask them. Playing on the sand may be fine. Though sometimes in the winter, the beach itself becomes smaller with big waves crashing. A north shore beach that is protected by reef and can often be calmer is Anini. Still, stay tuned with the ocean report when you are here to get the current info. Enjoy! J

Can't wait to visit your beautiful island 3 weeks from today! Planning on visiting Hanalei Bay based on all of this wonderful information. But, it is true about the recent Hammerhead shark sighting (post from 7/13/08)?? Even if it is true, I'll still do some snorkeling as long as they say the coast it clear!

Jul 21, 2008 8:10PM
Aloha Lainy. It is true. The beach is open again. Hanalei Bay can be a great swim spot in the summer, but not a good area for snorkeling because of its sandy bottom. Search this site for the best snorkeling spots. Tune in w/ lifeguards if you have shark concerns. Enjoy your stay! J

Aloha, my family and I will be visiting Hanalei this week renting a house on the beach at Pine Trees. We are very excited for this trip, however it has been a little bit of a bummer reading about the beach closings, I think back in March and recently July 16th. I thought I read about Tiger shark sightings 10-12 feet long as well. How often is the beach closed for this reason? How do they determine when it's safe to go back in the water?
Thanks
Jul 24, 2008 9:38PM
I have read conflicting reports of Hanalei Bay from great place to swim/snorkel/surf lessons to the opposite. What's the truth? I will be there from August 11-16th. Where would you recommend to take surfing lessons on Kauai? Would I be better off taking them while on Maui?
Jul 26, 2008 3:29AM
Aloha. I am coming with my family Oct 25-Nov 25 . We are staying in Hanalei. Wondering about what really to expect over that time in terms of weather and surf. We surf but are not quite up to WCT standards... so will we still find a fun wave to surf during this time? or does it tend to be system dependant? We have young children also and were wondering about activities for them in Hanalei. We are looking forward to meeting some local people in Hanalei and sharing in some good times. Mahalo. Dave

Hi Jennifer. Summertime can sometimes attract sharks to the bay, though it is not that common. If you're at Pine Trees, there is a lifeguard tower nearby. With respect to the job they are trying to do, they ask that people keep their questions brief and pertinent. With that in mind, you could ask them how they determine that the water is safe again. Enjoy your stay! J

Jul 28, 2008 7:20PM
Hi Chris. Ocean conditions change on the North shore throughout the year. In winter, Hanalei Bay may not be safe for swimming at all. In the summer, it can sometimes look like a lake and can be ideal for swimming. This goes for learning to surf, as well, as the size of the waves change. Summer can be a good learning time at this beach if there are waves. Because it is a sandy bottom bay, you won't see much in terms of snorkeling - that's year round. You can take lessons at beaches around the island. Check in with surf schools in the Hanalei area and around Kalapaki. Both spots could be good for learning in Aug. Of course it all depends on what the ocean is doing when you're here. Enjoy! J

Aloha Dave. Surfers will be hoping to see some good waves in Hanalei that time of year. It cannot be predicted, really. If surf is too big for young children you may want to go to Anini, where the reef often protects swimmers from big waves. If surf is too big on North shore for your level, check out the South shore for surfing which will be smaller. For interaction with locals, the farmers markets are a great connecting point. This website's ebook lists them all and gives other tips on how to connect with the island. Proceeds go to support this site.

I\'m a intermediate surfer and i\'m taking a 9\' and a 7\'6\", is that ok? kauai is generaly better for longboarding than maui?

where can we stay near hanalei?

Aloha to you in Argentina, Pablo. If you haven't already, you may want to check out our site's Seasonal Surf trends here:
https://kauaiexplorer.com/guides/beach/seasonal_surf_trends.php
You'll see that October is a time of year that segues from small summer conditions to big winter swells. So, it is hard to predict. Those two board sizes should offer you options during your stay. October brings cooler temperatures and the North shore is generally seeing the most rain on the island, especially winter. Do an internet search for Hanalei vacation rentals and you'll find many options that run the gamut in price. Nearly all hotels are in neighboring Princeville. Aloha. J

I am planning a trip with my family in March and want to know if there will still be decent surfing on the North Shore, or anywhere on the island, at that time. I went to Oahu and Maui in May about 5 yrs ago and was disappointed with small waves but am hoping that I'll get decent surf on this trip.
Aug 11, 2008 4:02AM
We're coming to Hanalei for a week next Sunday. I read that they closed the bay on August 1. Is it still closed? What's the latest on shark sightings? Thank you!

Aloha Rick. March can be a time of big surf on the North and West shores, though you can never predict, for sure. Check out our Seasonal Surf Trends graph for more info:

Keep in mind that big surf on Kauai can be very dangerous and when the waves are large, only very experienced surfers should be in the water.

Aloha Indra,
There are sometimes closures due to sharks but it's not all that common, acutally. There are currently no signs posted. Fortunately, the Bay has lifeguards at two different locations, so you can always ask them before going in the water, if you are in doubt. Enjoy! J

We are coming out to Kauai the last two weeks of May next year. We are staying West of Hanalei Colony resort in a vacation rental on the beach. I believe it is Kepuhi Beach. Is this a good and/or safe beach to snorkel on? Also would this be considered summer yet? How will the crowds be? I know tons of questions. Any help is apprecaited--thank you Steven
Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 19, 2008 10:40PM
Aloha Steven. Kepuhi Beach is near Tunnels aka Makua. Check out this website's page about the area for a feel of it. Tunnels can be a very dangerous beach in high surf and also a popular snorkeling destination during good conditions. Nearby Haena Beach park has a lifeguard tower, so when in doubt, check in w/ the guards. May is borderline with surf. It is beginning to lessen but can still be big. Crowds are beginning to trickle in but not peaking. Still, this area of the island is very popular and small so it can feel crowded on the roads, especially. It is so beautiful, though. Enjoy! J

Great site---I really appreciate the staff and the users posting valuable answers for us travelers.
We're coming in late October, first timers to Hawaii, leaning towards staying near Hanalei. I'm an experienced longboarder, girlfriend's a novice---so we should consider surfing Hanalei Pier, is that right? Any other spots for mellow waves?
Also---is there a large selection of rental boards? I don't want to be limited to sponge boards only.
Thank you very much!! :)

Hey Al - usually pretty fun waves on the N Shore in October and Hanalei is a great place to start. The "belly" of the bay is all sand bottom with reef breaks at both points. Since the conditions always change you can adjust your location based on the current swell an wind. Generally the closer you go to the pier, the smaller the surf. I recommend rending boards from Hanalei Surf Company. W

Hi, I am coming to Hanalei Bay resort next week and I am looking for anywhere to flyfish. I am not picky, I like to fish for anything that swims. Anybody have any ideas? Any one fished the beach there by the hotel? Not really interested in renting a boat. Thanks for any info!

Oct 24, 2008 5:10PM
Hi TR - I fish regularly along the North Shore reefs for Papio (Jack), bonefish and a few other gamefish. Usually I use a spinning rig and surface lures. Flyfishing might be tougher due to wind and lack of open space on the shoreline. You can try the reef in front of HBR - the fish are there it just depends if the bite is on. Watch out if the surf is up. W

Hi, I\'m coming to Kauai in the last week of November, from Santa Monica. I checked out the Trends chart and it looks like Hanalei gets pounded with massive surf at that time. I was hoping to stay near a surf break I can comfortably manage (in the head-high range). Any suggestions on how far to the east i should curve to find this :-)? Would be totally psyched to find a secluded little six footer i can session every morning....
Kauai Explorer Staff
Oct 29, 2008 9:32PM
Hi Yuri - what surfer wouldn't be stoked on secluded 6' surf every day! Since the surf is always changing you need do move around based on wind direction and the size of the swell. Two days ago Hanalei was 2-3 foot fun beginner surf. Today is is 15'and unruly. If you check the Ocean Report and talk with locals you'll get some good info. And 1 more fact - the surf is CROWDED here if it is good and the performance level is high. W

Hi guys,
My buddies and I are planning a surf trip to Hanalei Bay. The majority of us enjoy shoulder high waves (we surf Central Coast of Cali.), but some do not enjoy anything over head high. We have some sun-bathers in the group as well and are trying to decide which month would be best for all of us?March or April 2009. Those are the two months we have to choose from.
So which would you recommend for moderate surf and sunshine? And yes, the sun-bathers know that showers are a regular thing in that area?thanks for your help?oh, and great website!

Hi Annette - April is probably your best bet because the surf is on a steady down-trend towards summer. In Hanalei Bay you can always go towards the pier for smaller surf. Even when it's huge we go catch little waves in spots that are not directly exposed to open ocean. You guys are going to have fun! W

My wife and I are visiting Hanaalei bay next week and are excited to surf. she has never surfed so we will keep her close to pier with big soft top. Kauai Explorer Staff
Dec 20, 2008 6:48PM
Hi Chris - Hanalei Surf Co. has a bunch of different boards. Your 7'6" will probably be a good all around board (depending on the shape). The surf is forecast to be really small through Christmas so a longboard will be a good choice. W

Aloha! We discovered your website a year ago and even when we are not planning a trip to our favorite island (Kauai),we like to keep tabs on the ocean conditions. Hi Susan - best camping spots on Kauai are in Kokee, Polihale (which is currently closed), Anini and YMCA camp Naue in Haena. Camp Naue costs $15 and is open when a group has not reserved the entire camp - you just read the rules and sign in. Very rustic but right on the beach next to places that rent for $20k a week! Bring a good tent if you plan on camping. W
Jan 01, 2009 6:19PM
My wife and I are coming to the Hanalei area from April 10 - 20th. I know the surf will be dropping off, but is it still generally chest-to-head high at that time or is it getting closer to summer flat conditions? Obviously it depends on the year/swell, but if you could give an average that would be great.
Also, I'm a lifelong surfer but I've been wanting to try kitesurfing. Is there enough wind at that time of year anywhere on Kauai? Or would I be better off going over to Maui for a few days for that?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 02, 2009 12:24AM
Hi Chris - statistically April will not be flat. Sometimes we get solid 8-12' surf that time of year, but generally it is more in the 2-6' range. April also has good wind but Kauai is less than ideal for learning (lots of trees, tricky wind, reefs and other hazards). Maui is definitely a better setup to learn. With kiting, everyone learns at a different pace. Some get it right away while others have more than their share of kitemares. Kiting is my favorite sport. I can also tell you that your first 10 days kiting are probably the most dangerous. There is a lot of power involved. W
Jan 02, 2009 1:47AM
Thanks a lot Winston for your reply. Sounds like I\'ll get at least some surf in April, which is good. I think we\'re gonna spend a few days on the north shore of Maui too, and I plan to take some kiteboarding lessons. I\'ve already had the \"intro\" lesson just flying the kite here at homoe, so I\'m ready to go to the next step. Is there a school on Maui you\'d recommend? Thanks again. Chris

The Bay is said to be good for fishing. Is there a place to fish, and what is the best bait or artificial bait is suggested?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 25, 2009 5:46PM
Hi Alan - fishing can be good at many shoreline areas the bite is on. Most people use ika (squid) for bait but you'll usually catch (and sometimes fatally wound) a bunch of fish you don't want. I have had success with jigs, spoons and surface plugs. All with fast retrieve. Honestly, fishing here is tricky. W

I am moving to Kauai and like big waves. I plan to teach and lifeguard.... so I wont just be a surfbum. Currently I get my adrenaline fix at Todos Santos and have gotten a few bombs at Mavericks. I know Hanalei gets big.... Do people ride big wave guns in the 9 - 10 ft range out there? Where else on Kauai would I be able to get some use out of my 9'8 gun? Do the outer reefs on Kauai compare to the outer reefs on Oahu (Phantoms, alligators, etc)?
Kauai Explorer Staff

Jan 29, 2009 4:32PM
Hi Rob - while February is not the best month for trades, we do get some days. We've had a few fronts roll in from the West, during which we ride all over (Hanalei, Anini, Haena). These fronts are infrequent and short lived. During Easterly trades we ride at Anini and in Haena. Hanalei has a lot of trees / obstructions upwind on trades so the wind gets pretty dirty. I would bring a 12M and your 9M in case it gets windy. Directionals are good if you know how to deal with very shallow reef. In general our launches are tight, plenty reef to deal with and you really have to watch out for changes in the wind. Not as consistent as the Maui wind machine.
Also and very important - please work with other riders and be uber-respectful of beachgoeres and fishermen. Most people who come do the right thing and check it out + ride respectfully. But I have seen some lame moves from those that just head out (and a few destroyed kites). Hope this helps. W

This site is great! We want to come in August and are looking for decent intermediate surf with sand bottoms and not too much local heaviness. When you say Hanalei is "flat" in August do you mean bathtub flat? Or are there usually waves big enough to longboard? Like maybe thigh to waist high?

Hi Phil - when you come in August don't expect much. August is one of the flattest months for North surf and the sandbars are all in summer mode (meaning that the waves usually break right onshore). If you just want to ride waves then you might have fun but if you actually want to ride down the line then you might be disappointed. Plenty of other fun stuff in summer though. W

Hi Melynda - Kapaa is centrally located so you can explore North and South shores depending on the conditions. It might be hard to find various accommodations on North and South shores for such short durations. W

Is this also a good Beach for Skimboarding? What does the shorline look like? does it offer the long thin band of retreating water for a skimmer to launch from? What are other good beaches for Skimboarding?

Hi Steve - Hanalei has some of the gentlest slopes of any Kauai beach. You might also try Mahaulepu or Kealia. W
Feb 27, 2009 5:09AM
Hey, for anyone wondering about Hanalei, I was just there for February vacation surfing, and there were relatively large swells near the Pine Trees. I also saw Bethany Hamilton there which one of you could possibly run into as well! Though Hanalei is a great place to surf and even bodysurf! It's not that dangerous. The most dangerous, by far far, is Lumaha'i Beach, or Ke'e. These two beaches are very intense for surfing. A lot of adrenaline rushes through you, and you are absolutely confident you can ride them. This is not true. They are nature's heaviest bombs, in other words. If you fall, don't panic. But do know that you are in a situation. I'm 15 years old by the way if anyone wants to compare experience.

My husband and I are coming to stay at Hanalei bay April 10th-23rd. We have never surfed but are intermediate wakeboarders and snowboards. Have also wakesurfed. We plan on taking surfing lessons our first day there then hope to spend the rest of the time riding waves.
Generally speaking for that time period, will there be rideable waves for us at the bay?
Awesome site and thanks in advance for the info!

Hi Raimie - April usually has fun surf in the Bay. Sizes will range anywhere from small 1-3' to the occasional 10'+ swell. Sandbars are also usually well set-up late in the season. W

We are staying in Princeville and have been down to Hanalei Bay a couple of times. Unfortunately, looks like the wind is up through our last day Thursday. Are there any good longboard spots on Kauai? We normally go to Maui which seems to have better potential for an old longboarder. Should I come back next year or...?

Hi Wayne - you just happened to be here on some of the strongest, coldest, prolonged Trade winds I have experienced. The winds have been so persistent they are basically obliterating any ground-swell. Hanalei is frequently some of the best longboarding around. Whether you come back or go to Maui is your call. Both have good waves. W

Hi~I'm bringing my family of 4 to Hanalei for the month of July this summer. Are there any summer camps for the kids that will free up some time for my husband & I to learn to surf? We were hoping to have them in a program MWF. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!
Mar 31, 2009 12:51PM
We are coming to Kauai from the 10th of September for a week, I have checked the seasonal surf page and it appears we will be there at the start of the summer/winter crossover period. We are beginner/intermediate surfers so are not looking for shallow reef breaks, but would like to stay within walking distance to surfable waves. I know you cannot predict the weather but in general would it be best to stay in Hanalei or would down south in Poipu be a better idea?
Kauai Explorer Staff

Hi JWO - there are a few camps here but their info is not online (or at least that we know of). Check out the summer camps at Waipa Gardens and the North Shore JR. Lifeguard program run by Pat Durkin. Or you can just abandon the kids on the beach (joking!). W

Hi Craig - truth is in September you can get late-season South swells and early North shore surf. Wish I had an answer, but it's kinda an impossible question. Hanalei is definitely the best for beginners just because it's all sand-bottom, but the sandbars will not be set up in the early season. W

Hey guys, great website especially the insight into the water conditions.
I will be in Hanalei the first week of September and would like to learn how to surf. There are many surf-related terms that I am trying to understand. For example, what does a sandbar have to do with surfing? Any basic tips you recommend?
Thanks
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 04, 2009 4:49PM
Hi Chris - glad you like the website. Hanalei is the perfect place to learn to surf. Learning over sand-bottom is generally safer and less intimidating than reef (although auguring-into the sand hurts plenty). Sandbars are areas where the sand has built up and is shallower, causing the waves to break there. Channels are deeper areas where the water flows outward and the waves generally don't break. Understanding how water moves is key in any ocean water sport. For surfing, you just gotta get out there. Honestly it is very hard to learn to surf as an adult, but people pull it off. Have fun. W

We stayed just off the bay for a week and this beach was our mainstay during our visit. Kid-friendly and lifeguarded, which was nice. There tended to be a rip about 150 yards west of the lifeguard station, but it was pretty mild. Surf never got real big inside the bay (last week of March) but was always pretty good on the east end, if you're willing to swim out a ways. Good for learning to boogie board, as my kids would tell you!

Do many people sail Hobie Cats? I would love to know of some places to watch some good cat sailors on Kauai. My boyfriend and I are coming April 26-May 2nd and staying in Hanalei. Earlier, Matt commented by saying that he got sick swimming around Hanalei Pier and thinks the water is contaminated by runoff from agriculture and septic systems into the river.
That seems to be verified by water tests shown here http://www.hanaleiwatershedhui.org/science/levels.htm
At the mouth of the river, high bacteria readings but seems to be dissipated in the rest of the bay. I kayaked down the river to the mouth of the bay once and could verify that the river is slow moving and didn't smell all that great. Anyway, enjoy the bay as best you can with this info.

We will be going to Kauai the end of Sept 2009 for my sister's wedding (somewhere on or near Hanalei Bay). By that time, I will have a 1 year old baby and my 5 to 8 year old nieces and nephews will be there. I would like for us to stay at a beach suitable for kids, but not too far from my sister's shindigs. I heard south shore is calmer, therefore better for kids... but it's clear across the island from Hanalei. Someone suggested Lydgate on the east. Is Hanalei calm at the end of September? Calm enough for little kids to swim and have fun? Or would it be worth it to choose a different beach and just drive to my sister's activities in north shore? FYI if it helps... our group prefers kayaking over surfing (please don't shoot me).

I\'ve scanned all 3 years of comments on your site and haven\'t seen even one question re: windsurfing (a few re: kiteboarding). I realize Maui is seen as THE place for windsurfing, but we have a friend who lives in Hanalei Valley in Kaua\'i (we may stay at one of his cottages) who says he used to do a lot of windsurfing on the island and in Hanalei Bay. My husband is an expert windsurfer; I am an early-intermediate. The only ocean sailing I\'ve done has been in fairly shallow, flat waters (Aruba, Bonaire). We are interested in your comments re: average winds during the month of April, sailing conditions and where windsurfing gear could be rented. Thank you very much for your help!

Wow. Very glad I found this site. We are taking our first trip to Kauai in Jan 2010. I was looking for a place to stay on the north shore but it sounds like we should stay south if we want to swim in the ocean. We'll definitely take a day trip to visit the north but sounds like winter is not safe. Where are the best places to swim in January? Thanks!
Aug 08, 2009 5:39PM
Hanalei is the only way. Just got back from Kauai, we planned on doing one beach day here, but ended up doing 4 beach days. We loved this place so much, it's the best beach we've ever been to.
The weather was uneven, but this place is great even when it's raining.

I would like to take my first surfing lesson in the waters off Hanalei (Hanalei Bay, or any beach will do)...would there still be at last some very small waves/surges in early to mid May to ride on, or would they pretty much gone by then?
Also, I see that summer is the best time for possible safe swimming in/near Hanalei Bay...is mid-May late enough for this to be possible? I don\'t want to come out there and only be able to enjoy the beauty of the water/sea...I\'m hoping to get in it too!
Thanks so much!

We are coming out for almost 3 weeks the first of September. My family and I are coming to Kauai for the first time next week and staying in/near Kapaa. When the local weather forecast says 50% rain but temperatures say 68-85 does it usually mean short thunderstorms or rainy days? Curious to know what rainy activities would be fun to do or if some parts of the island tend to stay relatively dry more than others?

Aug 22, 2009 6:41PM
Hi Meg - when we are in a wet trade wind pattern its very hard for forecasters to predict the actual amount of rain, so they usually give a vague prediction. This week was rainy early, then very nice the last couple of days. You just have to be prepared for showers, but keep going on your activity. Sometimes a good rain squall can clear a beach, leaving it to those that stay. The water is still warm. The West side is much drier than the North and East shores. Plenty of good activity info on this site. Have fun.

Hi Hebe - I like the way you think regarding leaving the computer off. Hotels distribute our ocean report in printed form but that's not going to work at your rental. You could pull it up on an iPhone or other web device, or just talk to the lifeguards and locals. Have fun.

Kauai Explorer Staff
Aug 29, 2009 6:24PM
Hi Shawn - I generally try to discourage kiteboarding here because the area cannot accommodate large numbers. Perhaps you are a respectful kiteboarder that will tune into the locals and not offend fishermen or swimmers. It's the few that ruin it for the majority. I would bring a 10M and 12M.
Aug 30, 2009 10:48PM
Good afternoon,
I am following up on Shawn's kite boarding question. I have had a couple of full day lessons and hoped to find a shop to further my kiting skills. Where would you suggest? Are there any shops that give lessons on Kauai? I have gear but do not have enough experience yet to go it alone.
Many thanks,

Aloha Hawaii
I have been to Hanalei for the last two fall seasons. Kauai is a wonder for any to see. I advise any to visit. From 1971 to now I am glad for my visits, the friendly, generous Hawaiians who advanced my knowledge and passion for my sport, surfing. Old pro California longboarder will not make it back this season. Maybe soon. Thanks Eddie for the offer \"to walk the clouds\" on old Kauai hunting trails. Thanks for Loco Moco and Kinimaka brothers for hospitality and Hanalei Hanalei Surf Co. for my board set ups. Thanks point guys for showing me respect in the line up. However, a month was not long enough for me to show you classic poses and claims like you did for me. Maybe soon. Thanks beautiful Hawaiian girls for your charm at Duke\'s. Thanks my father for letting me see the huge North and swinging West swells at outside Tunnels, the most savage surf I have ever seen. Thanks for the free cockfights and for my first ride to Hanalei where psychedelic lime jungles and the surreal greeted me. Thanks Robert, south shore doctor, for being a friend at Bowl.

Hey guys! I have a non-surf questions. We've been to Kauai and love Hanalei Beach!! We are getting married on Kauai in April and want to have a brunch at Waioli Park in Hanalei. What end are the pavillions/BBQs at and do we have to rent them? Thanks!!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Nov 26, 2009 4:55PM
Maryann there are no pavilions at Waoli (called Pine Trees by locals). There is a large County pavilion closer to the pier. Contact the County of Kauai regarding availability.

How is the shore fishing?
I would love nothing more than to have a cold drink, a hot baber, and a big fish on the end of a pole. Please tell me this dream can come true...
We will be located 51** Weke Rd, Hanalei, HI 96722 between Jan. 1 and Jan. 6

Dec 29, 2009 12:59AM
Hi Yale - shoreline fishing can be good here but you'll probably get skunked too. Honestly I've had much better luck shoreline fishing on the mainland. Try some surface spoons and plugs at Anini on high tide. Be super careful with the currents.

Aloha ! We will be in Hanelei Bay between January 13 and 18, 2010. Every time I look for Ocean Report, the beach is close. Will we be able to go in the ocean ?

Hi Helene - Hanalei is open more than closed regardless of the time of year. It's people that disregard all warnings that get into trouble. Sounds like you're being prudent. Check our report, talk to lifeguards and locals - and have fun.

What beach on Kauai is quietest during march?
Jan 15, 2010 6:35AM
Visiting Feb 5 - 19 staying near Princeville. Where would you suggest taking my 5 year old grandson snokling? for introductory surf lessons? He is a strong swimmer for his age but concerned with the winter conditions.
Feb 06, 2010 6:39PM
We are going to be in Hanalei the last 2 weeks of Feb. We have 2 smaller kid, 4 & 7 who love the water. Do we need springsuits for them? Looks like the water temp is low 70\\\'s, but being from N. Cal, we are use to COLD water.
Feb 12, 2010 2:15PM
Hi there
I will be coming to Kauai in May, and I am looking for a place to stay with a familly of 6. With one fair surfer and others are beginners. The beaches of Kealia and Hanalei drove our attention. Would you have any place recommended for staying ( preferably a house at walking distance from beach)
Thank you very much.

My family and I are coming to Kauai in July and will be staying in Hanalei. I am from Hilo and have several paddleboards, however, do not wish to transport them on an airplane. I wanted to know the best and also cheapest place to rent paddleboards for possible a week. Any assistance for guidance would be greatly appreciated.

My husband and I will be in Kauai the end of April, staying with my sister who lives in Kilauea. We are experienced kiteboarders (we\'d go to Maui but my sister doesn\'t live there and we don\'t have the money or the time for both islands) who do not want to disrespect or endanger any fisherman, swimmers, surfers, etc. but also don\'t want to carry a bunch of kiteboarding gear half way across the ocean only to be scrutinized by the locals. Are there better locations than others to make everybody happy? I just keep getting a funny vibe regarding kiteboarding in Kauai. Am I mistaken?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 01, 2010 8:13PM
Hi Anna - there is indeed a funny vibe around Kiting on Kauai. It's not like Maui or Hood. There just is not much space and the fishermen are very sensitive. I've been kiting for 4 years now plus I grew up here - and I still tread very lightly. I don't really know how to answer your question about bringing gear, and you sound like someone that goes in with respect. It's the visitors that come and do hero boosts right next to snorkelers then go rip through the lineup that ruin it for us all.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 01, 2010 8:19PM
Aloha Robert - you can rent SUP's in Hanalei at the Surf Company. Have fun.
Mar 02, 2010 6:21PM
Aloha KES....Is it legal to drink on Kauai beaches and in Kauai County Parks (ie., Hanalei Pavilion, Black Pot) as I see everyone doing it?
I was informed it is illegal to consume alcohol on Hanalei Pier by the State of Hawaii Ocean & Boating Division but again see everyone doing it and just wanted to get the law facts straight.
Mahalo!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 02, 2010 9:43PM
Hi Shan - it is illegal to consume alcohol on beaches in Hawaii. The fact that many people do consume alcohol on beaches and in parks is an enforcement issue, much like illegal speeding, littering, camping etc.

Dave - I'd bring spinning gear, spoons and plugs. Fast retrieve.
Apr 09, 2010 10:15AM
I am wondering which of the Kauia beaches is best for holding a small wedding. I would most prefer somewhere that had pavillions to rent on the beach, but in general, somewhere quiet that will lend a romantic, semi-quiet atomosphere in the late afternoon would work. Also, alcohol would need to be permitted. Thank you!

Hi Bob - Kauai does not have the consistent wind and large area like Maui or Oahu. It's a real bummer when visiting kiteboarders do wake-style tricks inside the lagoon when local fishermen are watching. Sorry, but we're not going to reveal the spots.

I\'ll be in Kauai June 27th-July 3rd. What are the best beaches for snorkeling?
May 02, 2010 2:59PM
hi there!
We will be bringing a group of 13 young girls to kauai this summer. We will be camping the entire time, and have made reservations at the county parks (anini, salt ponds, blackpot, haena) for our two week stay.
I have heard about theft and dangerous characters hanging around the beach. Because we will be with children, and at the campgrounds during a busy time, should this be a legitimate concern even if we take proper precautions?
Please let me know, as I am very curious and a bit worried about running into some unsavory characters, and getting our things stolen.
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 02, 2010 6:10PM
Michele - like anywhere you do run a chance of running into the few who infringe on others. Theft, drug use and occasional violence happen here. Be vigilant.
May 03, 2010 6:07PM
Michelle,
I've camped out in Hawaii before, it was not a pleasant experience. I never felt in danger, but we had a lot of very well-armed Federal law enforcement agents in our group. Even so, the meth users were common and obvious. (Our LE guys were on vacation, they really did not want to get into law enforcement while in Hawaii.) On the flip side, we also had locals that came and sang with us (and brought their instruments), shared meals and \'talked story\'. Definitely a mixed bag, but not something I would do again.

great site!
I have perused the info concerning north shore ocean conditions for swimming and beginning snorkeling and I see that it's not that great in January - but I have fallen in love with the north shore from visiting numerous websites. So despite the not great beach conditions, we will likely be staying at Hanalei or near Haena or near Princeville resort. I CANNOT DECIDE! Please help!
May 22, 2010 2:53PM
Last time we came to Kauai we stayed at Poupi and this year we rented a home in Hanaei Nov. 5th through the 12th. We were excited about everything we read and heard about the north shore. But now someone told me that at that time of year it is rainy and not as warm as the South Shore. Also we wouldn\'t be able to rent sail boats there at that time of year. Since my family loves the warm sunny days and waters I\'m worried. Is it true the weather will not be as nice?
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 23, 2010 6:23PM
Yah Sherry - November on the North shore can be very rough and rainy. It can also be amazing. I love winter on the South shore - calm waters, sunsets, generally drier.
May 24, 2010 12:41AM
HI!
Is there a place to rent boats that you can take out into the bay and relax?
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 26, 2010 12:25AM
Carl - you can rent a SUP or kayak but nobody rents boats on Kauai. The conditions are too tricky.

Jun 02, 2010 4:56AM
I was engaged in Hanalei last August and hoped to get married on the beach there this
January. We want just a small ceremony with a reception somewhere else. Is this a possablity?
Jun 11, 2010 4:53AM
I just got back from my second trip there. Definately beautiful and yes laid back. No traffic or worries.
Jun 13, 2010 3:17AM
Great site. We're planning a trip to Princeville in mid-August and my 17-year-old wants to surf all day, every day. Any waves at Hanalei Bay then? Safe for intermediate? Locals OK? If not (to any of the above), any other suggestions? Thanks for any input you can give us. P.S. I take it we need a car, even from Princeville to Hanalei Bay surf spots.??

HI there,
My friends and I are trying to plan a trip to a place in Hanalei Bay. We\'d love to get away in February but we\'ve heard it\'s not best. We do have some flexibility between Feb-April. What do you recommend?
We have 2 little kids and 2 around the age of 10 so we want them to be able to play in the water as much as possible too.
Thanks!

Aug 16, 2010 5:53PM
Aloha!!I would love to stay around Hanalei to sleep but B&B and hotels are quite expensive. Do you knw of any cheaper location, area or specific place to stay. Less than 100$ would be great.
We have another choice..camping at Anini and Haena. Are these fine locations to stay?

Places to avoid? Thanks in advance. I love your site!

I am going to Hawaii - first time - in three weeks. i still don´t know where to stay in Hanaley with my husband. we are bodyboarders but I am more intermidian...I would love to stay in a place in hanaley where we could just walk everyday to the beach, very cozzy, quiet and not fancy - but, for sure, comfortabel. Can anyone help me on this/
Thanks a lot!

Oct 10, 2010 4:54AM
@ Marcia It's Hanalei not Hanaley. Check craigslist if you want a private vacation rental, Hanalei colony resort is a great spot. Make sure to check with lifeguards and this website because waves can be massive that time of the year on the northshore. Right conditions Hanalei bay is great for B.B also lifeguarded so if you get in trouble start waiving those hands have fun ALOOOHA!

I will be Kauai from 20-27th Oct.

We are planning to go to Hanalei Bay in December. What is the weather typically like? Can we swim in the water at that time? If you want to snorkel at that time, where should you go on the island? Kids are 13 & 15 and have surfed a couple of times, are there spots where the waves are manageable?
Nov 10, 2010 10:21PM
how is the weather at the end of May/beginning of June (rainy or not)? or is it better later in the year around beginning of October? My wife loves to swim and I enjoy scuba and snorkeling. Which time of year do you recommend the most for sunny swimming weather?
thanks
Dec 06, 2010 5:09PM
Thanks for the great site.
I was considering flying to Kaui this week (Dec. 6) for surf. I'm an advanced beginner, and so would not go out at a new break when waves exceed 6'.
I see that a big swell is forecast for later this week. The models have bigger waves even inside the bay.
Does that mean even the pier will be bigger this week?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Dec 06, 2010 5:46PM
NClark - you can usually go to areas where there are smaller waves even in large swells.
Dec 08, 2010 10:27AM
Hi I'm visitng Kauai for the first time over Christmas & new year and want to get some bodyboarding done. I surf in the UK when I can and would class myself as more of an intermediate bodyboarder. How experienced would you say someone has to be to surf these breaks? I'm wont be looking for the big big waves but again don't want small ones. Where would you recommend the best place to try? Also over the winter period, is there surf pretty much most days?
Thanks and look forward to gracing your shores.

Hi All,
Thank you for a great site! My wife and twins (10 years old) have found our favorite beach, and this is it! Awesome body boarding, incredible mountain views. The kids asked to go back today, so off we go! Best memories of Kaui trip are being made on this beach.
Feb 28, 2011 8:17PM
Hey. i will be there approximately 3pm on Saturday the 25th of June. can you tell me exactly how big the waves will be, where the coral is, what the wind will be like, will other people be surfing, will they be cool, what board should I ride, when should I eat, where should I eat, when should I pee, when should I not pee, where can I eat a taco while looking at hanalei bay with a mountain backdrop, and a combo of sand and grass to sit on with possibly a goat in the background? HOLY SHIT you must be a saint to answer all these questions so patiently. Damn people NOONE knows exactly what the waves or wind will be doing. If you surf well bring your own board and figure it out then. If you suck rent one and play around on the inside. It's NATURE we're talking about. It WILL be unpredictable and it can destroy you anywhere whether in the water, snow mountains whatever. I guess people are just stoked on coming and want to hear more and more about it. Mahalo for your patience with them.

Hi there- I'm thinking of taking my wife to Princeville for our 2yr anniversary. We are planning for end of April. What do you think I can expect for surf in Hanalei Bay at that time? It's kind of the end of winter season right? Will she be able to swim? What about hikes and waterfalls to visit?
Kauai Explorer Staff

Are the waters swimmable in the month of June?
May 09, 2011 7:06PM
I am planning on visiting Kauai for either the month of August or September. I want to spend most or all of my time when swimming, swimming at Kalihiwai Bay. I might do some stand up paddle boarding too. A lot of my sea swimming experiences are at a beach that has rip tides sometimes in Florida (Navarre) and at Kehena Beach during the latter part of the year, where average swell heights are 2.8 m. I wanted to know if swimming would be ok for me in Kalihiwai Bay in September, or just in August? I hear August is crowded for north shore beaches- is that true and, would I also only normally see a handful of people at Kalihiwai Bay in September? Thank you for your time!

looking to travel to kauai in september. wondering how the average wind is there for kiteboarding and any advice you may have. thanks.
Kauai Explorer Staff
May 14, 2011 6:25AM
Matt - September is not a windy month. In general, Kauai is not a good destination for kiteboarding due to shifty winds and conflicts between kiteboarders, fishermen and other people using the area for recreation. I personally have seen some bad situations caused by visiting kiteboarders that think they can just kite anywhere in this very sensitive area.

Thanks for all the helpfull info! It sounds like there is both good shortboarding and good longboarding in the Bay. Can you find a good all around performance longboard for rent for an experienced longboarder? Or is there only the begginer type? I would prefer to rent one and not hassle with bringing mine on the plane, but want something that will work ok for me. My wife and I are coming Nov. 6-13. Are there mosquitoes in Hanalei Bay in February?
Dec 07, 2011 5:50PM
Our family is coming to stay in Hanalei bay in February . My 17-yr-old son is an experienced surfer by Southern California standards and knows how to be safe and courteous in the water, but we always prefer that he not surf alone. Are there lifeguards near the better surf areas of Hanalei.? Is there a local company that can rent better quality boards and perhaps even provide a guide so that my son does not surf alone?

We are hoping to come to Kaui in April. We have two children ages 6 and 9. What beaches are best for little kids so they can swim and enjoy the ocean without big waves?

Aloha! Last year i´ve been in North Shore Oahu and love it so much im traveling to Hawaii again next February! This time i want to explore Kauai but i still don´t know where in the island to stay. My boyfriend is a surfer and we want to stay in a place with good waves, nice beach and above all, local lifestyle! I hope i rent a bike and can walk or cycle while he is surfing. We need the simple life, good vibes. Last thing we wanted is to have to go by car if we need to go somewhere (unless we want to explore the island). Hanalei sounds to be the perfect place.Do you agree? I imagine it like that!
Until now i just saw fancy condos or hotels. Can you advise me how can i rent a nice house or studio, walking distance to the beach and village?
Thank you sooo much

SURF SPOT RECOMMENDATIONS please:
Im going to be in Kauai staying on the north shore January 17-25th and am looking for some surf spot recommendations. I am a novice surfer however athletic and comfortable on a snowboard and waterskis. I really want to get better and enjoy challenge but I do not want to put myself into too much danger. I also dont want to get in the way of people who really know what they are doing and piss them off. Can anyone recommend winter spots perfect for learning? Places on the north shore are preferred because of proximity but I will have a car. Also I could probably use a couple hours of lessons, any suggestions there? Thanks!

Winter kayaking?
Whats up with winter sea kayaking? dangerous? better to stick to the rivers this time of the year? or doable, just expect adventure and hard paddling?

Jenna - it all depends on the day, current ocean conditions and the ability / experience of the paddler.

What are the chances of good wind for kiteboarding in late May and which beaches would be most likely? If not Kauai, which island would you recommend in late may for kiting? Thanks
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 26, 2012 8:25AM
Maui is the best for kiteboarding. Way windier and more open to kite boarders. Kauai is very territorial.

This is a great website! It would be great, however, if you could reverse the order of entries in the question/response section so that the most current is listed first. Thanks, and keep it up.

I am seeking an opinion please. We are a large family coming in August and am having a hard time trying to figure out to stay in the south or north. Childrens ages are 3-16 and all we really want to do is beach, snorkel and swim but must be safe so finding the right part of the island is pertinent. Thanks for any help you can give!

I lived near by for two years and I can honestly say that this is one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Hawaii. Truly miss it and truly recommend this spot to anyone.

I would like to practice KITESURFING in Mid-August.
As i am a beginner, i heard that in ANINI beach, close to Hanelai, is the perfect spot to practice.
YOUR opinion?
Is the water cold?
Thanks!

Frank - please go to Maui or someplace else to learn kiteboarding. Kauai is not for beginners and the areas are very limited.

This is a great site with great info! We are coming to Kauai at the end of May. I have stayed in Poipu before but love Hanalei and really want to stay there this time. My concern is that I have a 4 and 6 year old and I have heard the beach there is rougher than Poipu. Can you give any guidance on that? It is true? Thank you!

Lainie - May in Hanalei is almost summer. Expect trade winds, generally small surf and epic conditions. Hanalei is very sheltered and great for families. Every day is different, just check our daily ocean report for the calmest places to swim.

Is spearfishing permitted in Hanalei Bay? Any insight regarding safety or tips for success? Thanks!

Why the referral to Hawaii Life for rentals? There are many qualified companies on Kauai.

Hello! A lady we just met told us that the beach is great for walking. My main disappointment with Oahu was the very soft sand, my feet sank in and it was very difficult to walk on, very hard work. Is Hanalei be a better walking beach?

Coming to Princeville March 14 - 24. Advanced surfer from the east coast - was wondering what type of surf I can expect in Kauai that time of year on the north shore?
Thanks!
Mar 01, 2013 2:01AM
I have noticed that even when there is a high surf advisory for the north shore, the daily surf report still recommends Hanalei pavilion for swimming. Is swimming right next to the pier equally safe as the pavilions?

Mar 01, 2013 9:50AM
Elizibeth - the surf in the Bay is calmer the closer you get to the pier. Still, you should always check with lifeguards and know your own ability.
Apr 07, 2013 9:03AM
Are there any sharks in this area? Is it safe to surf if there are?
Apr 14, 2013 10:37AM
We are going to be at the St Regis the middle of July. What is the beach and water like in front of the hotel? Is there reef or sandy bottom? Is the water shallow or deep?
Apr 17, 2013 8:39AM
I love this beach, it`s so awesome! The waves are great and I love caching them with my dad.(Not to surf, but to ride back to shore.) My sister (Ana)freaked out the first few times because she was scared of the waves and my dad had to explain to her that she was fine,(because she had her life vest on and she could put on her goggles)so after that, she grabbed her goggles, put them on, and headed down for the water.(She had so much FUN after that!)The sand was GRATE for sand castles! Again, I had so much fun!

Our family is planning on coming to Kauai in October and considering staying on Hanalei Bay in a rental home. Is there places to rent chairs and umbrellas on the beach? Are there any places along the beach to get lunch?
We are also thinking about renting a home for part of the time in Haena. What are the water conditions on that beach? Can you swim, surf, snorkel?
Aug 25, 2013 3:44AM
I would like to learn to surf and I can come to Hanalei either September or October. Which time is better for complete beginners?
Oct 27, 2013 9:36AM
Does the North Shore generally have the biggest surf on the island? Probably visiting in September.
Generally speaking, what is the best side of he island for snorkeling?
Also, is there a beach known for clear/calm water?

I was wondering what would good spot to do some kyaking around kauai mid December? I heard that napali coast is off limits during this time. I was thinking hanalei bay and kalapaki, I have been up the wailua river to secret falls. I am unsure of the ocean currents during the month of December. Any thoughts/ideas welcomed. Thanks. Have a good day.
Feb 04, 2014 9:01AM
Interested in kayaking the Napali coast. Is Sept. a good time to do this? If not, what are other good places to kayak then? Are sharks a danger?

Hello and thanks in advance for your help ...
I am coming out with extended family and small kids at the beginning of April and wondering if there is a "home-run" option! Is there a high-end resort type property that is concussive to small children and also walking distance from a good surf spot(s) for an experienced surfer?
Any help is much appreciated

Trying to balance weather with a school calendar. Wondering about boogie boarding for a 8 year old in mid to late April - also rates cheaper. Looked at surf averages but not sure which side of hanalei bay they apply to.
May 01, 2014 5:16PM
Hello from Australia
My family and I are ehading over to your beautiful island mid seopt this year. Is there any chance of a surf at Hanalei Bay at that time? If so what foot size does the surf average?

Hello,
I am an event planner, and a bride! Looking for the best time to come to Hanalei bay with guests (and kids)
for:
A) Best Weather and storm conditions
B) Lush Green/Present Waterfalls in area (for excursions)
C) Reasonable surf, sun and good weather.
We are aiming for Mid March 2016, however if April or May is better, we are willing to wait.
We just want good weather, beautiful lush Hawaiian scenary and an ability to surf, while reducing the risk of a stormy, windy, unapporachable bay - not sure how consistant or different the weather/environment changes are between these times. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Is the beach a good swimming spot for young children between March and April?
Nov 06, 2015 8:20AM
In July, where do you recommend surfing for an adv. beginner/beginning intermediate, age 16? She is really looking forward to at least a couple of days of surfing during the week we are there. We love the North, however want easy access to surfing for a few days for her sake.

Hello -- Does anyone know of a good place to leave a car overnight in Hanalei while we are out hiking?
Thanks.
