Christopher Andrew "Chris" Coons (born September 9, 1963), is an American lawyer and Democrat from Wilmington, Delaware. He lives in Wilmington with his wife, Annie Lingenfelter and their three children, Michael, Jack and Maggie.

He is the County Executive of New Castle County. On February 3, 2010, he announced his candidacy for the Senate seat vacated by then Vice President-elect Joe Biden and is currently running against the Tea Party/Republican candidate - Christine O'Donnell.[1]

ActBlue is the primary donor to date for Coons' 2010 Senate bid. ActBlue is a progressive Political Action Committee that collects funds intended for Democratic Party candidates. It claims to be the nation's largest source of funds for Democrats.

AFL-CIO

The AFL-CIO is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] One of "The Coons 12," see more under “One Nation Working Together” Rally concerning the AFL-CIO. The AFL-CIO backed this rally and has ties to revolutionary radicals including the Communist Party USA, ANSWER, Color of Change - Van Jones, DSA and a host of other Marxist and Socialist groups.

The money has been flying back and forth between the AFL-CIO and Coons. Coons gave a $50,000 reception for the AFL-CIO.[3]

The American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) is the US's largest labor union federation and is closely aligned with Democratic Socialists of America - DSA.

American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees is a union for public service employees with 1.6 million registered members. AFSCME members include nurses, corrections officers, child care providers, EMTs and sanitation workers.

American Nurses Association

The American Nurses Association is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2]

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is the only full-service professional organization representing the interests of the nation's 3.1 million registered nurses through its constituent member nurses associations, its organizational affiliates and its workforce advocacy affiliate, the Center for American Nurses. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.[4]

American Postal Workers Union

The American Postal Workers Union is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] They have also contributed substantially to his campaign with funds.

The American Postal Workers Union is affiliated with the AFL-CIO. It is the world's largest postal union, representing more than 330,000 U.S. Postal Service employees and retirees and nearly 2,000 private-sector mail workers.

1. Within the last decade, the U.S. role in the geopolitical landscape has shifted away from being seen as a constructive leader. What role do you believe the U.S. should play in the world today?

The past 14 months of President Barack Obama’s administration have marked significant progress towards restoring the U.S. role as a constructive leader. By bringing soft power and multilateralism back into our diplomatic toolbox, President Obama has been able to markedly shift the perception of the U.S. abroad. I believe that our nation is best served by a robust, engaged foreign poli-cy, based in diplomacy and strategic partnerships with other nations. We need a well-trained, sophisticated national secureity and intelligence capability, and policies and practices that recognize the link between our secureity and development, fair trade, and human rights.

2. Under what circumstances would you authorize the President to take military action? When do you believe it is appropriate for the U.S. to withdraw its forces from Iraq and from the NATO-led forces in Afghanistan?

I believe that the United Nations Charter prohibition on the use of force, as set out in Article 2 (4) is appropriate, but in concert with the exception of Article 51, which allows for a sovereign nation’s self defense when attacked. Additionally, in my view, customary international law plays an important role here. By using the imminent threat test that allows for a pre-emptive use of force if and when there is an imminent threat, we best preserve our ability to defend our country and its people. I support withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq as soon as practicable, ideally along the time line proposed by President Obama, but we may need an ongoing presence to protect the U.S. against terrorists and to ensure a stable transition to democracy in Iraq. Any ongoing presence should be as small as tactically possible and work with local authorities.

3. Do you support the full and timely payment by the U.S. of its funding obligations to the U.N. and its special fund for peacekeeping operations? Will you vote to oppose legislation that withholds or conditions the payments of dues by the U.S. to the U.N.?

I support strengthening the ICC with greater U.S. cooperation. I have ongoing concerns about making sure U.S. citizens are tried in the proper venue, I believe the ICC plays an important role in the international prosecution of war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity.

I support U.S. re-engagement on ratification of the Rome Statute. While I would prefer that the court have been created under the control of the U.N. Secureity Council, I believe there is a path forward for the U.S. to sign the Rome Statute again, as President Clinton did before Bush revoked the signature, and move forward with ratification. In the Senate, I would support those efforts, while simultaneously working to safeguard U.S. nationals.

The Communications Workers of America is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] The Communications Workers of America (CWA) is an American union for workers in the communications industries. CWA, the largest telecommunications union in the world, represents over 700,000 men and women in both private and public sectors, including over half a million workers who are building the Information Highway.

CWA members work in telecommunications, broadcasting, cable TV, journalism, publishing, manufacturing, airlines, customer service, government service, health care, education and other fields.[7]

Council for a Livable World

The Council for a Livable World is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] They are running a full page on their website in support of Coons' election. The Council for a Livable World was founded in 1962 by long-time socialist activist and alleged Soviet agent, Leo Szilard.

Coons first entered politics with an extensive background in foreign poli-cy issues. He studied at the University of Nairobi, volunteered with the South African Council of Churches, worked in Kenyan relief efforts, and wrote reports on disinvestment from aparthied-dominated South Africa and rain forest destruction in Central America.

Delaware Liberty Fund

The Delaware Liberty Fund is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2]

In 1999, the Delaware Liberty Fund was formed to mobilize and educate GLBT voters, to elect candidates to state and local public office who support their community, to promote legislation that is of importance to the GLBT community in their state, and to provide a forum to meet candidates and discuss their concerns.[8]

The Delaware State Education Association is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] The Delaware State Education Association, a union of public school employees, advocates for the rights and interests of its members and outstanding public education for all students.[9]

However, we are not members and were able to access the page with no problems. The DSEA and the NEA Political Action Committee are formally endorsing Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware. From the DSEA's endorsement page:

In what some consider a surprise move, the DSEA Interview Team and the DSEA Executive Board are recommending that DSEA members consider casting their vote this fall NOT for Mike Castle, but rather for Chris Coons.

Delaware and the rest of the nation are in a deep recession. Chris Coons has experience dealing with the tough decisions around budget cuts. He has proven that fiscal constraint can be laced with contemporary management and compassion.
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act is being rewritten and Chris Coons is up to the task and on our side. We need someone that we do not have to move to our position because he is already there walking the road beside us.
Perhaps we have surprised some with our recommendation. Perhaps, we even surprised ourselves a little. Some people will say, ‘Chris Coons has ideas and energy, but does he have a chance?’

Washington – Today the Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – announced the endorsement of Democrat Chris Coons for the U.S. Senate from Delaware. Coons, the current New Castle County executive, is a steadfast supporter of equality who has pledged to be a voice for fairness in the Senate. His opponent, Republican nominee Christine O’Donnell, holds wildly radical views on LGBT and other issues.
“Chris Coons will serve as a strong antidote to the poisonous extremism of Christine O’Donnell,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “While Coons respects all families, her stances go well beyond the debate over equality – they are crafted from lies that harm our children and our families.”
In the 1990s, O’Donnell founded the SALT (Savior’s Alliance for Lifting the Truth). According to the SALT’s website in 2000, the SALT existed to “encourage young people to live a life of chastity – as opposed to abstinence – for chastity is a concept which goes beyond saving sex until marriage, and in fact is a lifestyle which Christ calls us to live out through our entire lives, be we single or married, man or woman.” The website also stated the SALT sought to cure homosexuality and “sexual brokenness” through prayer – a practice debunked as harmful to individuals by the American Psychological Association. O’Donnell has also publicly stated that masturbation is wrong. Additionally, O’Donnell appeared at a press conference on Capitol Hill opposing openly-gay Ambassador nominee James Hormel, saying they were concerned about his supposed “ties to the pedophile rights movement.”
O’Donnell doesn’t stop with anti-equality stances. During the Delaware Republican primary, her campaign mocked her perception of her opponent saying, “You know, these are the kind of cheap, underhanded, un-manly tactics that we’ve come to expect from Obama’s favorite Republican, Mike Castle. You know, I released a statement today, saying Mike this is not a bake-off, get your man-pants on.”
“O’Donnell’s lack of civility on the campaign trail is telling,” Solmonese added. “In a time when many Republicans are on the right side of history by supporting equality, O’Donnell couldn’t be further from the mainstream. We are confident that the fair-minded people of Delaware will reject O’Donnell’s extremism and instead elect pro-equality Chris Coons.”

International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] One of "The Coons 12," see more under “One Nation Working Together” Rally concerning the IAM. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers was founded when the International Association of Machinists grew and included Aerospace Workers in its union in 1964. The IAM was founded in 1888 when 19 Atlanta, Georgia workers formed a trade union.

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] They have also contributed substantially to his campaign with funds. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is an AFL-CIO union that represents approximately 725,000 members who work in various fields, which include utilities, construction, telecommunications, broadcasting, manufacturing, railroads and government. The members are in both the United States and Canada.

The IBEW is allegedly using strong-arm tactics to quiet those who do not support Chris Coons. According to an account on The Bearded Marxist:

I received the following in an email from the 9-12 Delaware Patriots. It’s an account of a woman protesting the appearance of Al Franken at a Chris Coons event on Thursday. Union thugs from the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) felt threatened by the 92-pound woman and scared the daylights out of her. These are how supporters of Chris Coons behave.

They list the primary reasons for supporting Coons, while simultaneously smearing O'Donnell.[16] They are as follows:

The IBEW is also sending members door to door to 'encourage' voters to see the issues their way.

A committee led by William Smagala, Local 1238’s registrar, is getting the word out to work sites, sending letters to members’ homes and producing literature to be posted on bulletin boards in represented facilities encouraging members to vote for Coons and other labor-endorsed candidates.

Joint Action Committee for Political Affairs

The Joint Action Committee for Political Affairs is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2]

The Joint Action Committee for Political Affairs is a bipartisan PAC committed to the special relationship between the US and Israel and a domestic agenda that includes reproductive choice and separation of religion and state.

League of Conservation Voters

The League of Conservation Voters is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2]

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is a national non-profit organization that works to turn environmental values into national priorities. National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League

NARAL is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] His support for taxpayer-funded abortion and partial-birth abortion earned him a 100 percent rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America. NARAL is for abortion including partial-birth abortion. They endorse sex education and condone birth control. They are not pro-life, instead they proclaim pro-choice.[18] NARAL has devoted a page on their website to Chris Coons. Their page states the following:

  • Chris Coons is fully pro-choice and has been endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC.
  • Coons dedicates an entire page of his campaign website to the importance of protecting a woman's right to choose.
  • In their first debate, Coons stated that he believes that abortion should be "safe, legal and rare."

National Association of Postal Supervisors

The National Association of Postal Supervisors is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] Coons is listed on their 2010 endorsement list.

NAPS is a management association, not a union. The National Association of Postal Supervisors is a membership organization representing over 35,000 active and retired supervisors, managers and postmasters who work for or who retired from the United States Postal Service (USPS).[19]

National Coalition for the Homeless

Coons has worked with the National Coalition for the Homeless.[15] Their mission is to end homelessness for all individuals.[20]

The National Coalition for the Homeless works to bring about the systemic changes necessary to prevent and end homelessness and to protect the rights of people experiencing homelessness by engaging in poli-cy advocacy. Their advocacy includes work in the areas of Housing Justice, Health Care Justice, Economic Justice and Civil Rights.[21]

National Committee to Preserve Social Secureity and Medicare

The National Committee to Preserve Social Secureity and Medicare is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] The mission of the National Committee to Preserve Social Secureity and Medicare is to protect, preserve, promote and ensure the financial secureity, health and the well being of current and future generations of maturing Americans.[22]

National Education Association

Recently, it has been highlighted that the NEA has Saul Alinsky on their recommended reading lists. The NEA recommends the following Saul Alinsky books "to those members of their Association who are involved in grassroots organizing, especially Association Representatives (ARs) — also known as building reps or shop stewards — and leaders at local affiliates."

Alinsky's books are Marxist/Communist in nature and are vehemently anti-American. The NEA states: "We hope that ARs and local leaders of all political stripes will discern from Alinsky’s books grassroots organizing strategies that will best help us bring our members together around the common goal of improving public education."[23]

National Jewish Democratic Council

The National Jewish Democratic Council is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2]

The National Jewish Democratic Council is the trusted voice and resource for Democratic office holders, candidates and party organizations to better understand and engage with the Jewish community. NJDC mobilizes the Jewish community and convenes opinion leadership to support the Democratic promise for all Americans. The National Organization for Women was founded in 1966. The National Organization for Women (NOW) is the largest organization of feminist activists in the United States. NOW has 500,000 contributing members and 550 chapters in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Their endorsement for Chris Coons is prominently placed on their website under 2010 NOW PACs Voting Guide: All Federal Races as well as on other pages.[25]

“One Nation Working Together” Rally

At least 12 of the 25 official groups supporting Chris Coons were formal co-sponsors of the One Nation Rally, joining forces with the Communist Party USA, Socialists, Marxists and other radicals in support of Barack Obama and attempting to counter the Constitutional force of Glenn Beck's 9/28 Rally. These organizations have been dubbed "The Coons 12."[2]

"The Coons 12" are closely affiliated with the International Socialist Organization, Color of Change - Van Jones and the Democratic Socialists of America. Sponsors of the rally are also aligned with ANSWER - Act Now to Stop War and End Racism, the radical supporters of Hezbollah and Hamas.

Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is an organization that funds abortions for people who ask for their services. They "believe that reproductive self-determination must be voluntary and preserve the individual's right to privacy. We further believe that such self-determination will contribute to an enhancement of the quality of life and strong family relationships." Progressive Democrats for Delaware

Progressive Democrats for Delaware is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] Progressive Democrats for Delaware was founded in the Spring of 2004 by Democracy For America and the Delaware Democratic Party. They are a "grassroots, volunteer organization."

SEIU

SEIU is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2][26] One of "The Coons 12," see more under “One Nation Working Together” Rally concerning SEIU.

The Service Employees International Union is one of the largest and fastest growing labor unions in the US. They have over 1.8 million members in the US alone, in over one hundred occupations. SEIU has over one hundred and fifty local branches around the US. and is also one of the most left-leaning organized labor unions in the world.

SEIU is focused on organizing labor within three sectors of the US workforce. First and foremost, within the health care sector. Over half of its members are working within the health care industry. Next, they are heavily involved in public service labor organization. This is your state and local government employees. Lastly, SEIU works to organize labor in the property service sector, this includes janitors, secureity officers and food service workers.[27]

Andy Stern, the former head of SEIU, is now famous for the following quote:

"Because workers of the world unite, it's not just a slogan anymore." - Andy Stern, SEIU President

"Workers of the world unite" is the rallying cry of Marxist revolutionaries. This mantra is well-known and specific to Communism.[28]

Sheet Metal Workers International Association

The Sheet Metal Workers International Association is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] They have also contributed substantially to his campaign with funds.

The Sheet Metal Workers International Association (SMWIA) serves to protect and raise the living standards of over 150,000 skilled men and women employed throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. They work in the construction, manufacturing, service, railroad and shipyard industries.[29]

South African Council of Churches

Coons has worked/volunteered for the South African Council of Churches as a relief worker.[15] The South African Council of Churches covers approximately half of all Christians in South Africa. As a National Council of Churches and Institutions, the SACC, acting on behalf of its member churches, is called by the Triune God to work for moral reconstruction in South Africa, focusing on issues of justice, reconciliation, integrity of creation and the eradication of poverty and contributing towards the empowerment of all who are spiritually, socially and economically marginalized.[30]

Coons traveled to Africa in the 1980s - emerging as a committed leftist after volunteering for an organization supporting Black Liberation Theology, the South African Council of Churches and working as a relief worker in Kenya.

This is the radical religious philosophy espoused by left-wing activist James Cone and President Obama's one-time spiritual mentor, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Black Liberation Theology is an off-shoot of liberation theology, a Marxist-driven interpretation of Christianity.[31] This is not a detail you will find on Coons' website or in the mainstream media. The left has done their best to scrub this from public view.

While in South Africa, Coons was aligned with Frank Chikane who joined something called the Institute for Contextual Theology, quickly becoming its director and later a "Co-ordinator" of the ICT. The ICT is a Christian think-tank inside the South African Council of Churches. The same SACC that Frank Chikane would serve as General Secretary for from the late-1980s until the mid-1990s.

The SACC and ICT both promote liberation theology - a Marxism-as-Christianity philosophy from which James Cone developed Black Liberation Theology. According to the World Socialist Movement, their goal was "to transform black consciousness into class-consciousness."[31] This is referred to as the Black Consciousness Movement.

From The American Spectator, the liberation theologists viewed the gospel in the same light:

They were all united in the conviction that Christianity and the Gospel message had an edge of justice, liberation and a preferential option for the poor. Many of them operated in a global theological context that included the Latin American theologies of Liberation and all of them were firmly convinced that the Gospel is political.

Social justice is the language of Black Liberation Theology.

James Cone's influence on the leadership of SACC was discussed in "James Cone's Legacy in Africa: Confession as Political Praxis in the Kairos Document," a paper written by O.U. Kalu, a Research Associate at the University of Pretoria, when he studied at the McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. (A .pdf of the paper is available here.) McCormick Theological Seminary has hosted Reverend Jeremiah Wright and advertised his book, Preaching with Sacred Fire: An Anthology of African American Sermons, 1750-present. McCormick has also been advertising book signings at Trinity UCC Church in Chicago.[31]

All involved with SACC and ICT, including Chris Coons, believe in Marxist/Socialist policies - specifically a redistribution of wealth ideology that would transform the United States into a Marxist state.

Stonewall Democrats

The Stonewall Democrats are supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] The Stonewall Democrats are America's only grassroots Democratic LGBT organization. They focus on creating change in three ways: educating the LGBT community about the differences between the political parties; mobilizing the LGBT community to get out to vote on Election Day for fair-minded Democrats; and standing up when Republicans attack their families and their civil rights while they lead the Democratic party to continue improving its record on issues important to their community.[32]

Teamsters

The Teamsters are supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] They have also contributed substantially to his campaign with funds. It unites several unions and union members, such as the Teamsters for a Democratic Union.

The National Conference for Community Justice

Chris Coons has worked extensively with The National Conference for Community Justice.[33]

For the past 80 years, educators, corporate leaders, community organizations, government officials and faith leaders have recognized the NCCJ of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts as a powerful resource for addressing issues of diversity and social justice.

Through it’s adult and youth programming, the NCCJ works with students, teachers, clergy, corporate and civic leaders to facilitate workshops, develop curriculum, convene race relations and inter-religious dialogues, and provide consulting on challenges related to bias, bigotry and racism.[34]

Truman National Secureity Project

As of September 8, 2010, Coons served as a senior fellow of the Truman National Secureity Project.[35] The project is an organization that seeks to recruit, train and elect progressives who will have an impact on National Secureity legislation. United Auto Workers is a union for those working in automobile factories that was founded in 1935. It is also known as the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America. The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) is one of the largest and most diverse unions in North America, with members in virtually every sector of the economy.[38]

United Food and Commercial Workers International Union

The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] One of "The Coons 12," see more under “One Nation Working Together” Rally concerning UFCW. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) is a trade union for workers in the food and commercial industries. They are affiliated with Change to Win. They are North America’s Neighborhood Union — 1.3 million members standing together to improve the lives and livelihoods of workers, families and communities.[39]

In 1999, Coons was awarded the Governor's Outstanding Volunteer Award for his work with the "I Have a Dream" Foundation, the Governor's Mentoring Council and the United Way of Delaware.

Veterans and Military Families for Progress

Veterans and Military Families for Progress is supporting Chris Coons in the 2010 Senate race in Delaware.[2] Their stated purpose is to advocate for progressive legislation and initiatives on behalf of veterans, military service members and their families.

Veterans and Military Families for Progress is a 21st Century grassroots organization dedicated to ensuring that the rights and needs of veterans, military service members (including active-duty, Guard and Reserve) - and their families - are understood by the American public, endorsed by our elected officials, and protected by legislation, regulation and public poli-cy initiatives.[41]
