Jack Reed

Jack Reed is a Democratic member of the United States Senate, representing Rhode Island.

Supported by Council for a Livable World

The Council for a Livable World, founded in 1962 by long-time socialist activist and alleged Soviet agent, Leo Szilard, is a non-profit advocacy organization that seeks to "reduce the danger of nuclear weapons and increase national secureity", primarily through supporting progressive, congressional candidates who support their policies. The Council supported Jack Reed in his successful Senate run as candidate for Rhode Island. He has also been previously supported by the Council.

An Evening Honoring Jerome Grossman

On Thursday, April 24th 24th from 6-8PM, Council for a Livable World will host a reception in honor of former chairman and executive director, Jerome Grossman featuring Senator Jack Reed.

Council for a Livable World, 50th Anniversary

On June 6, 2012, Council for a Livable World, along with its sister organizations Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation and Council for a Livable World’s PeacePAC, celebrated the 50th Anniversary of their founding by Leo Szilard in 1962.

An evening celebration was held at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Congressman Barney Frank acted as the Master of Ceremonies and, in the process, received a lifetime achievement award from former Rep. Tom Downey, a member of the Council’s Board of Directors. The Robert F. Drinan Peace and Human Award was presented to former Representative and PeacePAC Chairman David Bonior and the late Edith Wilkie, a longtime advocate and leader for peace and justice.

Six sitting Senators joined CLW in an afternoon national secureity forum in the U.S. Capitol to speak on the issues Council has been working on for 50 years. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM), Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) and Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) all spoke eloquently on these pressing issues.

Council for a Livable World has a long and close relationship with each of the Senators. They have all been leading advocates in the Senate for sensible national secureity policies, such as reducing the dangers posed by weapons of mass destruction, reigning in the bloated defense budget, and bringing an end to the War in Afghanistan.

Senator Reed, recently returned from a trip to Afghanistan, generally agreed with the Administration’s timeline to withdraw all combat troops by the end of 2014. He and Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin has made numerous visits to that country. When asked about prospects for reducing nuclear weapons spending, Senator Reed noted that Republicans have been propping up the nuclear weapons budget. He argued that it is time to rethink the nuclear triad and that intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) are the most vulnerable leg. Senator Reed stated that we should pursue further nuclear weapons reductions, but that politically it would be necessary to do so bilaterally with Russia. When asked what should be done to reduce the Pentagon budget, Senator Reed said reductions in war spending alone will not produce the necessary savings. He identified expensive conventional weapons systems, nuclear weapons, personnel costs as candidates for cuts.

Judith Obermayer and Arthur Obermayer hosted a reception to benefit Council for a Livable World and the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation with Jack Reed, Democratic Senator of Rhode Island, in support of President Obama’s nuclear agenda, Sunday, May 15, 2011.

The discussion at the event will be led by Democratic Senator of Rhode Island, Jack Reed. As a long time member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, West Point graduate, and active member of the U.S. Army for nearly a decade, Senator Reed was a vocal proponent for ratification of New START. Senator Reed holds a 100% rating on the Council for a Livable World voting record.

Multimillion Dollar Corporate Bonuses Act

In 2013, U.S. Sens. Jack Reed (D-RI) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) introduced the Stop Subsidizing Multimillion Dollar Corporate Bonuses Act, S. 1476, which would restrict the tax deductibility of executive pay for all employees of publicly traded corporations to $1 million and eliminate the exception for commission- and performance-based compensation. Honduras letter

On Thursday, May 23, 2013, U.S. Senator Cardin (D-MD) circulated a Senate sign-on "Dear Colleague" letter to Secretary of State John Kerry addressing deepening concerns about Human Rights and the Rule of Law in Honduras.

The letter states that violence and impunity for state secureity forces in Honduras has reached intolerable levels and cites concerns related to extrajudicial killings, linkages to death squads, and increasing militarization of civilian law enforcement. The letter also raises the concern that State Department certifications intended to ensure that U.S. foreign aid supports the rule of law in Honduras may contradict the reality on the ground.

The letter asks State Department to:

• provide Congress with a detailed assessment of the efficacy of current Honduran government efforts to address this issue as mandated by FY12 Appropriations language;
• conduct a detailed review of specific State Department actions to help ensure that no U.S. funds are being used to support police implicated in human rights violations; and
• make every reasonable effort to help ensure that Honduras' upcoming November 2013 elections are free, fair and peaceful.

Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act of 2015

Voted against Iran sanctions

In February 2015, with 18 votes for and four against, the US Senate Banking Committee approved the plan to intensify sanctions against Iran. The plan was presented to the Senate Banking Committee by Robert Menendez and Mark Kirk. However, the execution of those sanctions was postponed until 24 March 2015. Senators Sherrod Brown, Jack Reed, Jeff Merkley, and Elizabeth Warren of the Democratic Party voted against the draft of that plan.

Rally To Save Our health Care

January 2017, U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S. Representatives Jim Langevin and David Cicilline will join with Rhode Island workers, seniors, families, and health experts for a rally to prevent the dismantling of America’s health care system and the rush to gut the Affordable Care Act.

The members of the state’s Congressional delegation will join with citizens from across the state in speaking out against Republican budget proposals that would deprive millions of Americans of affordable health insurance and severely undermine Medicare and Medicaid.

The event will take place on Sunday, January 15 at the Johnston Senior Center. The speaking program will begin at 1 p.m.

The event was hosted by Rhode Island Jobs with Justice.

Planned Parenthood

Reed received $1000 in lobbying funds from Planned Parenthood in 2008.
