LITTLE ANCHOR. BIG ADVENTURES

Our program stresses learning through experience with an emphasis on self-direction and responsible free choice. Young children learn best through a "hands-on" approach, which encourages play orientated, active involvement with tangible materials. Through play, the child meets new situations, sets out to understand the circumstances, and in the process gains understanding and skill in problem solving.

ENROLLMENT

As our Preschool children begin to depart before kindergarten, children will move up to the older classrooms - which creates openings in our Infant and Toddler rooms. Thus, our openings typically become available between June-September. We rarely have openings from October-May. We occasionally have openings in our Junior room, but rarely in our Preschool room as there is almost always a student in Juniors of age to move up before bringing in a new student.

Our priority system is as follows;

1. NOAA Employee

2. Federal Employee, On-Site WRC Contract employee

3. Community Family

(Siblings have ultimate priority in the same order)

Most openings are taken by NOAA employees, but on average about 20% of our total enrollment is community. Keep in mind, we only have 8-12 total openings per year (8 of which are infants), so NOAA and Federal families are not guaranteed to enroll. Our 20% community enrollment includes the Preschool students who may have been fortunate to enroll as infants or toddlers.

On your waiting list application, please DO NOT select “Full-time Federal”, 3-Day Federal”, or “2-Day Federal” if you are not a Federal employee.

directions

When trying to locate our center via your phone, enter our address (7600 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle, WA 98115) and/or “NOAA Western Regional Center” - NOT “Little Anchor Child Care”. We are located on the NOAA campus, but for some reason most apps will direct you to a false location within Magnuson Park. NOAA’s entrance is marked by a large blue and white sign north of the Magnuson Park entrance and stop light at 7-Eleven (NOAA Drive) directly across from rust, olive, and mustard colored condos.

Infants

3 Teachers / 8 Children ages 6 weeks - 15 months +/-

The Infant room accommodates children until walking steadily, able to feed themselves, and interact in a structured environment. Infants typically move on to the Toddler room between 14-17 months of age. Our schedule varies as the room is on-demand. Eating, sleeping, and planned activity times are individualized. Each child is a unique individual with different needs, rhythms and rates of development. We make every effort to accommodate your requests and your baby's special needs. Parents are welcome to visit at any time and breast feeding is encouraged. We do not swaddle in our program.

TODDLERS

3 Teachers / 13 Children ages 15-28 months

We believe that energetic, patient, and understanding teachers are critical for the healthy development of your toddler. We understand that toddlers are naturally curious, passionate, and adventurous. Our goal is to help them feel comfortable in their new environment.

We work hard to provide clear expectations and spend each day recognizing success and learning from setbacks. We create a loving environment to help foster growth and comfort in a time of potential high-stress and rapid growth.

The Toddler room focus is on building blocks to bigger and more complex ideas. We believe each toddler learns at their own pace; therefore, we create a structured environment where young children can experience a balance between teacher directed and independent activities.

JUNIORS

3 Teachers / 14 Children ages 2.5-3.5 years

The Junior room is a busy place where your child will grow from toddler to preschooler. During this time, children acquire tons of new skills (including potty training) and hone skills they already have. In the Junior room we focus on learning through play and place an emphasis on developing social skills. Children become increasingly independent during this age. We foster this emerging sense of independence by promoting self-help skills and providing lots of hands-on activities. We provide activities to enhance each child's social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. We constantly adapt the curriculum to suit the children's needs. We strive to create a calm atmosphere and fun yet firm environment where expectations and rules are made clear.

PRESCHOOL

3 Teachers / 19 Children ages 3-5 years

The Preschool room serves children until they are eligible for kindergarten (born on or before August 31st). The classroom is arranged in a series of learning centers providing structured activities with choices and weekly and/or monthly themes.  The monthly theme will be used as a guide to reach predetermined monthly goals. For instance, during an Olympic year, this theme will be used to teach and learn about sportsmanship, teamwork, and world cultures.

Our approach remains socially orientated and provides the children the opportunity to become involved in decision making. Children choose their desired activity by placing their photo in the offered activity on the Choice Board. Activities are limited to a certain number of participants so children must recognize and determine if space is available. This encourages the children to choose their activity based on the activity itself, instead of the presence of friends.
