Anunciamos el Hackathon de Wikimedia 2021

The Wikimedia Hackathon 2021 will take place as a remote event on May 21-23. This event is open to all people who are interested in discovering the technical aspects of the Wikimedia projects, working on specific tools, features or projects, and socializing with other participants. Building on last year’s edition, this event is organized in a very light mode, offering a lot of space for spontaneity and experimentation. We hope that this event can be a moment of fun, reconnecting with long-time-no-see Wikimedians as well as onboarding new people into the technical community. We also expect this community-powered event to be used as an experiment field for other online events.

All ideas and suggestions are welcome. This year, we would like to explore the following topics:

  • Free and open source tools for online gatherings
  • Find co-maintainers for your tools
  • Create and improve documentation

Format of the event

The event will take place from Friday, May 21st to Sunday, May 23rd. The schedule takes into account the various time zones in which the participants are located.

The program consists of one main track of sessions, recorded, on which participants can follow and comment, and several open rooms for informal discussions, workshops and other sessions, not recorded. The entire program is powered by the participants and monitored by the coordination team. You can find more information on the schedule, and discover more on how to contribute.

In parallel, participants are encouraged to work together on projects, and to keep track of their activities on the Phabricator board. There are also various discussion channels, social tools and events to help people connect and socialize during the hackathon.

Please keep in mind that people will join from different time zones, and at some hours there will be more people around to connect with and help you.

Participation

The hackathon is open to everyone: people who are new to the Wikimedia project or the technical aspects of wikis are especially welcome! We encourage everyone to work together, support each other and feel responsible for providing a nice and welcoming experience to all participants.

If you're a newcomer, feel free to have a look at how to contribute to find resources and ideas to get a good start in the event. On the newcomers helpdesk, you can also find answers to your questions, and meet people to work with.

Important: The Code of Conduct for Wikimedia's Technical Spaces will be in effect at the Remote Hackathon, on all platforms and discussion channels. Please have a look at it and ensure you are willing and able to follow it.

Feel free to have a look at the list of participants and add yourself there! On this list, you can find other participants, discover more about their interests and projects, and contact people if you need help on a specific topic.

Coordination team

Here are the people taking care of coordinating the event this year. You can also help us with running the event in various roles! Feel free to reach out to us on wiki or social channels if you need our support!
