Nanoscience and technology is the branch of science that studies systems and manipulates matter on atomic, molecular and supramolecular scales (the nanometre scale). On such a length scale, quantum mechanical and surface boundary effects become relevant, conferring properties on materials that are not observable on larger, macroscopic length scales.
Multiple exciton generation can increase the detectivity in photodetectors but has limited effect in infrared detectors. Now, a strategy for kinetically pumped avalanche multiplication has been demonstrated in colloidal quantum dot-based infrared photodetectors, achieving an 85-fold multiplication gain and ultrahigh detectivity of 1.4 × 1014 Jones.
Pre-eclampsia is a common and dangerous pregnancy-related illness. Using tiny lipid particles to deliver messenger RNA directly to the placenta to boost blood-vessel function might prove to be an effective treatment.
Remote epitaxy is used to grow semiconductor structures on 2D material covered substrates. Here, a method for fabricating ultrathin 2D amorphous carbon layers on III-V semiconductors is demonstrated using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition as a universal template for remote epitaxy.
This study explores how the interface between Permalloy and graphene affects the propagation of magnetic domains. Using advanced transmission electron microscopy and simulations, the research reveals key insights that could advance future memory and logic technologies.

Communications Chemistry is pleased to introduce a Collection of research works focused on recent developments within the interdisciplinary field of on-surface synthesis. Here, the Guest Editors highlight key themes and look towards the future of this research field.
In a device comprising two double quantum dots separated by a 250-μm-long superconducting resonator, virtual photons in the resonator are shown to mediate the coupling of electron spins between the quantum dots. When the spin–spin coupling is activated for a controlled duration, oscillations between the spins are observed.
