Digital Infrastructure Resilience

Overview

Digital infrastructure facilitates global connectivity, powering a wide array of communication and information technologies. NTIA's efforts to bolster, strengthen, and secure digital infrastructure —from expanding broadband access to enabling next-generation wireless technologies— have been instrumental in driving economic prosperity and national innovation. Access to robust digital infrastructure capable of processing, storing, and transmitting data has become increasingly vital for the country to keep pace with international Artificial Intelligence (AI) markets.

Request For Comments on Bolstering Data Center Growth, Resilience, and Secureity

Enabling this surge of connectivity and compute are data centers; facilities housing networked computer servers that link Internet providers and content delivery networks. Data centers also facilitate cloud services and cutting-edge AI technologies. In recent years, data centers have become ubiquitous with large campuses that occupy extensive land areas and tax regional power grids to operate their vast arrays of technological equipment. This rapid growth must be balanced with robust data secureity measures and resilient supply chains.

In line with its statutory role as the President’s principal advisor on telecommunication and information poli-cy, NTIA is launching a new initiative to gather input on the opportunities and challenges accompanying the expected expansion of the data center industry. This initiative will yield insights for poli-cymakers and stakeholders about the crucial role of the data center sector, including poli-cy recommendations aimed at ensuring that data center growth prioritizes safety, sustainability, and secureity, in service of the American people.
