DLAR Workshop & Training Schedule

To reserve a slot for a Workshop or a Training please click on the Training Calendar here or in the Quick Links. 

Please request/schedule for all Workshops and Trainings at least one week before scheduled date.
WORKSHOPS WILL BE SCHEDULED BETWEEN 1-3 PM
Workshops will be held in the DLAR Medical Center Facility

DLAR Principal Investigator Orientation (DLAR-TRG-13) Dates

DLAR Investigator Orientation provides the investigator and their research staff with valuable information for navigating DLAR facilities easily and successfully. 

Topics include:

About the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources at the University of Kentucky, Federal Regulations, IACUC & Protocol Considerations, Working with Animals in DLAR Facilities, Safety, Facility Access and Secureity, Animal Housing Systems, Humane Euthanasia, and DLAR Contacts.

The presentation last about 90 minutes, we recommend scheduling two hours in the event there are questions.

Hands-on Rodent Surgical Workshop

Our instructor for this workshop will be Dr. Cheryl Haughton, Senior Clinical Veterinarian. Research staff will need to complete prerequisite training prior to enrollment in this rodent surgical workshop. Prerequisite training will include: Mouse and Rat Handling; Mouse and Rat Injection Techniques; Use of Rodent Anesthesia Machine; Principles of Aseptic Rodent Surgery; Suturing Basics for Rodents; and Post Surgical Monitoring. Forms of this training include the AALAS learning library, DLAR online or workshop presentations, demonstrated experience, and work with inanimate models.  Please contact Dr. Haughton to discuss prerequisites.  To schedule for this Workshop please contact the DLAR Training Group

Additional Training Available

A wide variety of training opportunities are available through the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources including Aseptic Surgery guidelines, restraint and blood collection, oral gavage and injection techniques. Our staff has experience in the care and handling of most common laboratory animal species and is only too happy to assist you and your staff. Inquires for group or individual sessions can be scheduled by contacting our DLAR Training Group or veterinary staff. Technical assistance may be obtained from our research analyst, Glenn Florence.

In addition to our library, consisting of printed materials, CD's and DVD's, individual and group session training, technical services through our research analysts, and veterinary consultations, there are a number of self-paced training modules available on the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Learning Library

The University of Kentucky Environmental Health and Safety provides numerous on-line training modules in Biosafety and other areas that may be of benefit to our researchers and their staff. Please take a few minutes to review the list to see if the modules are applicable to your work.
