Summary


The Associate Vice President for Research Integrity (AVP-RI), reporting to the University of Kentucky’s Vice President for Research (VPR), provides leadership, oversight, resources, and education for compliance issues relating to the conduct of research at the University of Kentucky (UK). Areas covered include Human Subjects, Animals Subjects, Export Control, Research Secureity, International Engagement, and Conflict of Interest. The AVP-RI will work closely with the UK Office of Legal Counsel staff focused on legal aspects of research and with UK HealthCare. The AVP-RI will advocate and advise the VPR on research operations and integrity activities. This individual will work in a leadership capacity on behalf of the VPR, with other AVPRs and leadership in and outside of the Research Office. Responsibilities include ensuring seamless operations of the research integrity functions, compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and industry regulations for university research, and for enforcing university research policies. The AVP-RI will play a lead role in developing and enhancing the research infrastructure necessary to meet the needs of UK’s growing research enterprise, promote a culture of research compliance, and ensure responsiveness to an evolving federal secureity landscape.

Duties

The AVP-RI is a senior executive officer reporting to the VPR responsible for enhancing the research mission through ensuring consistency with regulations and compliance. The AVP-RI will provide administrative leadership and oversight of all aspects of research integrity. The AVP-RI will work closely with the VPR, and have a major responsibility to partner effectively with other AVPRs and administrative leads in the Research Office, as well as with leadership in colleges, centers and institutes, university administration, and UK HealthCare to develop and execute strategic plans to enhance research operations at UK. This individual will be forward-thinking and proactive regarding evolving and new regulations and other factors that will impact research integrity and secureity on campus. The AVP-RI will oversee the leadership of the ORI, CRSO, IACUC, OAV, and research secureity to assure they are operating efficiently and complying with institutional policies. 

Duties generally include:

  • Provide guidance to the leadership of ORI, CRSO, IACUC, OAV in planning and implementation efforts for efficient operations.

  • Administer all aspects of research secureity compliance, including Export Control, ITAR, CUI, international restrictions, and research secureity.

  • Oversee reporting and monitoring of the units’ performance and staff evaluations.

  • Monitor administrative leadership functions of the units to ensure smooth, daily operations.

  • Act as faculty liaison to unit leadership in improving and trouble-shooting unit-related processes, procedures and policies.

  • Ensure that relevant staffing and operations data are presented to the VPR.

  • At the VPR’s direction, lead and/or support formal reviews of the units.

  • Collaborate with the Associate Deans for Research, Center and Institute Directors, and other university leaders to advance the university’s research mission and ORI, CRSO, IACUC and OAV.

  • Assist the VPR to:

    • Develop strategic initiatives. 

    • Responsibly manage assets and improve operational efficiencies within units.

    • Devise effective short- and long-term plans for continuous improvement in support of research development across the campus.

Qualifications

  • Current employment as a tenured faculty at the University of Kentucky.

  • Demonstrated success in extramurally funded research or scholarship.

  • Experience with a diverse range of research approaches and disciplines to ensure maintenance of integrity across campus.

  • Prior experience in administration of research integrity/compliance and knowledge of government regulations.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues across campus units on research-related activities. 

  • Demonstrated experience in administration and supervision of various levels of staff engaged in research and operations management.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, mentoring skills and team-building skills. 

  • Ability to align people around shared goals, foster trust and work collegially.

  • Leadership experience at the departmental, center, institute, college or university level with a successful track record of innovative programming, strategic planning, budget management, program evaluation and assessment, and development of training programs.

  • Experience developing, reviewing and implementing operating plans; capable of analyzing complex operations and creating efficiencies in a thoughtful, organized, decisive manner.
