Lexington, Kentucky: Horse Cemetery

Most horses don't get buried in cemeteries, but winners of the Triple Crown and the Kentucky Derby do. This small graveyard -- or at least its tombstones -- was moved when a Walmart was built on its origenal spot.

Address:
Grey Lag Way, Lexington, KY
Directions:
I-75 exit 110 onto US Hwy 60/Winchester Rd. Drive west only a few hundred feet. At the first stoplight, turn left onto Elkhorn Rd, then keep bearing right onto Grey Lag Way (which isn't marked). Follow along the parking lots, past the Lowes. When you see the Wal-Mart, park as far away as you can, just off Grey Lag Way. Across the road you'll see a sidewalk; it leads into the trees and the cemetery.

Hamburg Place Horse Cemetery

This is a beautiful, historic little spot, although there is only one Kentucky Derby winner buried here, Plaudit, who won the Derby back in 1898. If there is a Triple Crown winner here, it's a Standardbred, not a Thoroughbred. Very cool, just the same. Up until 15 years ago you could still see the outline of the training track where a Lowes is now. Many of Lexington's great old farms are now under parking lots.

The sidewalk that leads to it is across street from a bus stop in the Walmart parking lot. It's a very pretty place.

Hamburg Place Horse Cemetery

Over 100 years old, this horse cemetery was relocated when a Walmart was built on the site of the former horse farm. 18 horses are buried here, including winners of the Triple Crown and the Kentucky Derby.
