Carolinian - USC News & Events | University of South Carolina Skip to Content

With more than 360,000 living alumni, the University of South Carolina has stories to tell, and Carolinian is here to tell them. From celebrated artists, scientists and business leaders to everyday alumni who embody the spirit of Carolina, this is our story — and this is your magazine.

Carolinian is published three times a year and distributed to members of the USC Alumni Association. Select features from the print edition can be found here, alongside web-exclusive stories, videos and interviews that celebrate our successes, revisit our history and remind us what it means to be a Carolinian. Forever to thee!

Difference Makers

For the first time in Carolinian history, we’ve published two different covers simultaneously recognizing two different alumni. Why? Because in less than 10 months the University of South Carolina has received two gifts of such transformative potential that those two donors’ names now grace the Joseph F. Rice School of Law and the Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing. You can read about alumni Joe Rice and Alex Molinaroli — and their respective families — in the fall Carolinian, regardless of the cover you received in the mail. Or you can read about them here.

And Rice and Molinaroli are not the only Gamecocks making a difference, as our latest edition makes abundantly clear. From supporting research and endowing scholarships to making sure that students in need can put food on the table, when Gamecocks come together for a cause we make a real difference.

Family Style

The Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing is named after a family, not a single person. Brothers Alex, Carl and Ray Molinaroli showed us why.

Why Quit?

Attorney Joe Rice capped an illustrious career last fall with a record gift to the law school that bears his name, but the self-styled cowboy is hardly ready to ride into the sunset.

Cocky’s Call

First Night Carolina marked the start of another school year Aug. 19, and the Horseshoe pep rally that kicked it off drew thousands of excited new Gamecocks plus a few familiar faces.

The Barbers of Bowens Island

For Hope Barber and the Barber family, running Charleston’s iconic Bowens Island seafood restaurant is a way of life. You could say the same about the Barbers’ deep ties to USC, which stretch back almost as far as the family’s longstanding waterfront business.
