THE PEP

Introduction

Banner for THE PEP

Travel and transport are essential parts of modern life. We depend on transport to travel to work, for shopping and leisure, by car, by bus, by train, by walking and cycling. Human powered mobility can also contribute to our health and well-being through physical activity.

But transport also has harmful effects on the environment and on our health – through congestion, accidents, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

More than ever, we need to be aware of the crucial connection between transport, health and the environment.  THE PEP – the Transport, Health and Environment Pan-European Programme – makes the link.

The work under THE PEP is achieved through a set of implementation mechanisms: THE PEP Partnerships, THE PEP Relay-Race Workshops; National transport, health and environment action plans; THE PEP Academy; and THE PEP Tools (HEAT and ForFITS).

The work is guided by the Steering Committee of THE PEP and receives political support through regular High-level Meetings on Transport, Health and Environment.

Highlights

The Partnership on Active Mobility promotes cycling, walking and public transport as an equal and sustainable mode of transport. It strives to support the implementation of the first ever pan-European Master Plan for Cycling Promotion, which identifies cycling as an environment-friendly, healthy and sustainable form of mobility throughout Europe. Through the collaboration of member States, intergovernmental organizations and civil society, the partnership seeks to refine guidelines and tools to further promote a healthy active mobility all over the UNECE region. It is led by Austria, France, and the Netherlands.
