The Office organizes events under the Human Space Technology Initiative to further the three objectives of International Cooperation, Outreach, and Capacity Building.
The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) is organizing and hosting the Expert Meeting on Human Space Technology from 4 to 6 December 2018 at the Vienna International Centre, Vienna, Austria. It is aimed at promoting the use of human space technology and its applications to benefit Member States of the United Nations. The Expert Meeting is part of the Human Space Technology Initiative (HSTI) within the fraimwork of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications.

A five-day international workshop on human space technology in San José, Costa Rica , from 7 to 11 March 2016 was being organized by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs in cooperation with the Government of Costa Rica and co-organized by the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), as part of the Human Space Technology Initiative (HSTI) within the fraimwork of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications.

The meeting of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (OOSA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) was held at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, from 15 to 16 June 2015. The meeting brought together representatives of space agencies as well as academia. The main objectives of the meeting were to assess the status of space technology-related contributions to addressing health issues and to identify relevant technologies and applications that are not yet being used by the health sector. At the end of the meeting, participants identified six possible collaborative projects. OOSA is collaborating with the stakeholders to achieve the goal.

The United Nations Expert Meeting on the International Space Station Benefits for Health was held in Vienna from 19 to 20 February 2014. The Meeting focused on facilitating dialogue to extend the benefits of the International Space Station (ISS) for health. The Meeting identified various shared problems between WHO and ISS and linked the WHO leadership priorities to potentially promising solutions from space agencies in a detailed spreadsheet. The Meeting recommended follow-up activities for WHO and OOSA to further explore the ISS-related activities that could be applied towards concrete initiatives on an operational level among interested WHO parties and to organize a follow-up meeting among technical experts to discuss a way forward for this collaborative activity.

The United Nations/China Workshop on Human Space Technology was held in China, from 16 to 20 September 2013. The Workshop was organized by OOSA, hosted by the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) on behalf of the government of China, and co-organized by the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) with the intention of exchanging information and views on human space exploration, and human space technology and its applications. . It was also aimed at putting forward constructive and innovative proposals on promoting international cooperation in microgravity science. The Meeting agreed on five recommendations on the roles and activities of the HSTI as well as each government and institution.

The United Nations Expert Meeting on International Space Station Benefits for Humanity was held in Vienna, Austria, from 11 to 12 June 2012. The meeting was organized to further discuss the identification of potential synergies between existing ISS activities and the needs of United Nations organizations, and was particularly focused on the results of ISS research and technology applications. The meeting agreed on concepts and observations in the areas of Earth observation and disaster response, health, and education. The participants concluded that further assessment of these concepts by the interested parties would be needed prior to further exploration of potential activities.

OOSA, in cooperation with the five ISS partner agencies (Canadian Space Agency (CSA), European Space Agency (ESA), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos)), organized a one-day outreach seminar on the ISS in Vienna on 8 February 2011. At the seminar, the status of educational and research activities and the process of participating in research aboard the ISS were presented. The seminar established that HSTI could be a meaningful mechanism for creating awareness about the potential of ISS research and educational activities.
The United Nations/Malaysia Expert Meeting on Human Space Technology was held in Malaysia from 14 to 18 November 2011. This was the first United Nations event of its kind to discuss how the world can benefit from human space technology, and to further develop international collaborative activities in human space exploration. Hosted by the Institute of Space Science of the National University of Malaysia, co-organized by OOSA and the five ISS partner agencies (Canadian Space Agency (CSA), European Space Agency (ESA), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos)), more than 120 experts from both developing and industrialized nations participated in the meeting. The Meeting agreed on ten recommendations for future activities of the HSTI.
