Fred Haise
Fred Haise was an American astronaut who was born on November 13, 1933,
in Mississippi.
Before he became an astronaut, Haise was an Air Force pilot. He logged
over 8700 hours of flight time.
Haise became an astronaut in 1966. He has spent over 143 hours in space
on one spaceflight. In 1970, Haise flew aboard the unlucky Apollo 13.
This mission was to have landed on the moon, but an explosion in the
command module forced Haise and crewmates to endure the arduous task of
making it back to Earth alive.
The crew used the lunar module as a lifeboat and survived for 86 hours
with limited oxygen. They made is it back to Earth safely through the
innovation of ground engineers and the crew itself.
Haise left NASA in 1979. He is currently president of the Grumman Space
Company.
