Taking the exam?

Welcome to the ASABE professional licensure resource center. Please log in with your membership credentials to access all resources and tools as you prepare for the exam.

Reasons to get licensed

  • Authority: Only licensed professional engineers (PEs) can sign and seal drawings, serve as an expert witness, or oversee the work of subcontractors
  • Career Development:  A PE is a necessity for increased levels of authority and responsibility, including the opportunity to serve on your state licensing board
  • Flexibility:  Licensure opens opportunities to you and allows you to go as far as your initiative and talent will take you
  • Money:  PEs often earn higher pay throughout their career
  • Prestige:  Be part of an elite group of qualified engineers

The PE Incentive Program

ASABE's Professional Engineers Institute (PEI), the Dale Wm. Zimmerman PE Fund, and the ASABE Board of Trustees have partnered to provide two incentives:

  • First-time ABE PE exam takers will be eligible for reimbursement of PE exam registration fees up to $300, and another $150 incentive upon completion of the exam.
  • Repeat ABE PE exam takers will be eligible for $150 reimbursement.

The offer is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact us by August 1 to apply. The $150 can be used for any expense the candidate chooses—study materials, hotel room night before the exam, additional exam fees, etc. Receipts and results from the exam will be required to validate eligibility.

FE and PE Exams

FE Exam

The FE is a computer-based exam that is administered year-round at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers.

PE Exam

The Agricultural and Biological PE exam is administered by computer-based testing (CBT) format once per year in October.

Professional Engineering Institute

The Professional Engineering Institute (PEI) is a membership community within ASABE. Founded in 1994, PEI provides a forum for engineers to understand and take action on issues affecting the vitality and continuity of the engineering licensure and profession in agricultural, food, and biological systems.

  • PEI promotes engineering licensure, helps licensed engineers maintain competency, and supports creation and maintenance of resources to help others become licensed.
  • PEI provides a forum for engineers to discuss issues that impact the profession of engineering in agricultural, biological, and food systems.
  • This community works to enhance the credibility of agricultural and biological engineers in the engineering community, and to promote ASABE to the industry and the public

How to Become a PEI Member

To be eligible for membership in PEI you must be a member of ASABE and be either a licensed engineer or hold an Engineering Intern classification provided the classification has been in existence for less than 10 years. PEI dues are $30 annually. These dues are used to fund projects that are above and beyond the Society's base financial support.

You can join PEI on your annual dues invoice or by contacting Tina Schultz.
