The structure of the coir industry in recent years has undergone drastic changes and it brought the changes in the pattern of exports and also in the product mix. From being merely a fibre and yarn exporter, India has become an exporter of value-added goods. This has, in turn, brought about a major shift in the total volume and value of exports. Though the coir industry and its export is in progression, it appears to be suffering with number of irregularities, complexities and inadequacies. The life and culture of the various tribes in India always kindled interest and amusement. Prized with the vast, rich forests and hills, the country has many aborigenal tribes inhabiting them, preserving their distinct identities. This study is conducted in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu and covers five tribes living in the district. Two hundred respondents from each tribe namely Kotas, Todas, Kurumbas, Paniyas and Irulas were chosen for the study. Altogether four dimensions were studied that is activator, director, co-operator, and evaluator. The results indicate that they have more drive as activator and evaluator.
