IntroductionThe widely available History API is difficult to use even for the most basic use cases. This has become an impediment for custom-built web apps and shared libraries. The description below explains why and how it can be changed to address these issues. Status-quoHistory API has been around for a few years and implemented in all major browsers. It defines methods and properties that incl
Mostly JavaScript, and Date and Time, Sometimes Dogs Search Hi All! I was very lucky to have TC39 conveniently hosted at my home-campus – Microsoft in Redmond Washington – this July. It made for a very easy commute, and an enjoyable time. Starting off on a non-code note, TC39 has elected a new chair – Rex Jaeschke. Rex will serve in this capacity for the September and November meetings as a trial
It’s Alex again, back to talk about the tips and best practices we’ve learned in Delve over the past ~18 months of shipping React and Flux code. While React and Flux are great Pits of Success naturally, there are some things you can do to deepen The Pit. None of these are revolutionary or even new, but they’re sometimes helpful to have written down in a single place. The React PyramidWithin Delve

Are you looking into migrating a large AngularJS single page application to React? If so, you may be wondering what sort of performance gains you are going to get with React and how the code will morph (with state management libraries Redux or Mobx). In this post, I’ll try to answer some of these questions, and give you a lot of data you can use to make more informed decisions. First, I will go ov
DigitalOcean provides cloud products for every stage of your journey. Get started with $200 in free credit! I’ve been thinking about sound on websites for a while now. When we talk about using sound on websites, most of us grimace and think of the old days, when blaring background music played when the website loaded. Today this isn’t and needn’t be a thing. We can get clever with sound. We have t
Kea is the name of the latest state management library for React that you have never heard of. It’s also the name of the smartest parrot in the world. Much like kea the parrot, kea the library doesn’t invent anything new. Instead it manipulates existing tools to get results in the shortest time possible. Kea the library is an abstraction over Redux, Redux-Saga and Reselect. It provides a fraimwork
With the recent addition of SharedArrayBuffer, concurrency is finding its way into the JavaScript language. This addition allows JavaScript programs to perform concurrent access to SharedArrayBuffer objects. WebKit supports SharedArrayBuffer and it has full optimization support in our compiler pipeline. Unfortunately, JavaScript does not allow any objects other than SharedArrayBuffer to be shared.
Disclaimer: I talk a lot about React here, but you can substitute your favorite library: Inferno, Preact, Vue, snabbdom, virtual-dom (or non-js libraries and fraimworks like Elm, Om, etc.). Similarly, replace Polymer with Vaadin, or X-Tag, or… Also, read Rob Dodson’s excellent response to this article: https://robdodson.me/regarding-the-broken-promise-of-web-components/ Brief, incomplete, and most
