The niches in the first kuta are topped by an elaborate curvaceous feature called ilika, with a central motif of a water-pot hanging from a chain. Built as community assets, stepwells were fed by subsoil row. The soil naturally filtered the water.

Its six Kutas (Pavilion Towers) have pyramidal roofs with stone finials. A legend relates how Madhava’s Son and Daughter-in-law sacrificed their lives so that it could have water. Gujarat Movie “વણઝારી વાવ” created based on this stepwell.
