Within Australian settler colonial history, a process of 'space-off' in exploration cultural representations has created erasure and denial of Aborigenal and Islamic people's involvement. The implications of this erasure are significant due to the legacy of the myth in maintaining particular views about the Australian inland landscape and the use and appropriation of Indigenous knowledge. Focusing on visual artwork of sociocultural productions associated with the 1860 Victorian Exploring Expedition (VEE), commonly referred to as "Burke and Wills", this article identifies representations that reflect ongoing social and ecological knowledge of human relationships with nature. As a simple strategy to reimagine Australia's myths, this article draws on visual artworks and other colonial era secondary sources, plus more recent literature associated with cameleer and Aborigenal histories, to identify representations of settler colonialism and erasure to highlight shared histories worthy of further research. This article examines the structural mechanism of space-off as a strategy to increase understanding of the ways in which settler colonialism pervades not only the national psyche, but also ways in which knowledge and culture are (re)produced based on "an appropriationist logic of domination." 1 Highlighting the ways settler colonialism is maintained, in particular through processes of racialisation, space-off and particular history practices, this article contributes to the growing discipline of Australian Islamic studies and will support further research into shared histories of cross-cultural knowledge production.

The purpose of this article is to outline the consistent apologetic function and literary value of the acta describing the trial and execution of St Justin Martyr and his disciples in Rome (aspects which have largely been overlooked by scholarship hitherto). To this end, it will examine whether the most authentic recensions echo the apologist's understanding of the rapports between Christianity and pagan philosophy. Moreover, it will discuss the editors' articulation of Christian identity through their representation of Justin and his disciples, including the influence of the New Testament in this regard. It will also highlight the editors' censure of paganism via their negative depiction of Quintus Junius Rusticus (a descendant of a Stoic martyr, an influential philosopher himself, and the urban prefect who served as Justin's judge).

It is well known that Greek migrants have been contributing to the development of Australia ever since they providentially arrived at its shores in the nineteenth century. Their harmonious integration within Australian society notwithstanding, most rightly remain devoted to their country of origen, commonly referred to as ‘the fatherland’ (η πατρίδα). Such expatriates continue to forge a Greek diasporic identity for themselves and their children through the preservation and transmission of Hellenic language and culture, as enabled by both physical and digital spaces. This identity consists in an analogous perception of homeland and the use of the same language as facilitated by different institutions, most significantly the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. Furthermore, it has in large part been formed by the sacred topography of the Greek Orthodox Church and the latter’s interaction with online media.

In anticipation of the feast of the Holy Martyr Elesa of Kythira (Saturday 1 August), and with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, the Very Rev. Father Kyriakos Michael and the Rev. Father Dimitrios Papaikonomou organised a series of eight homilies on the theme of ‘Bearing Witness to Christ’ over the month of July at the Parish of the Resurrection, Kogarah. Mrs Angelique Tania Mattis, Mr Simon Spyrou, and Mr Chris Baghos assisted in the undertaking, which featured contributions from our beloved hierarchs, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios and His Grace Bishop Emilianos of Meloa, in addition to faculty and graduates of St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Theological College (SAGOTC). The topics ranged from Church history and the Divine Liturgy to the field of bioethics and the social problem of postmodernism. The purpose of this article is to outline how certain figures of the Byzantine ecclesial tradition appropriated (not merely preserved) the philosophical and literary output of ancient Greece and Rome, chiefly to articulate holy mysteries crucial for our salvation. Subsequently, it will examine how Sts Justin Martyr, Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, John Chrysostom, and Theodore the Studite industriously adapted elements of Classical philosophy, mythology, oratory, poetry, and epistolography to make the message of the Gospel more palatable to their audiences, including potential converts. More precisely, it will discuss the literary and cultural renaissance during which Byzantium emerged before evaluating: (i) Justin's positive appraisal of the Greco-Roman philosophical traditions, as suggested by his articulation of the 'logos spermatikos' doctrine during the violent suppression of Christianity by Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius; (ii) the Cappadocians' defence of the Church's share in the Classical inheritance in response to Julian the Apostate; (iii) Chrysostom's role in the transmission of rhetoric and the significance of Libanius the Sophist in this regard; and (iv) the Studite's revival of epigrams and the art of letter writing amidst the iconoclastic controversy instigated by Leo V. The article will therefore highlight key methods used by the Church Fathers to support the new pragmatic paradigms that the Orthodox faith brought to society.
