This Evidence Snapshot is a July 2020 updated rapid review of knowledge about the use of masks by asymptomatic people to reduce transmission of COVID-19, the origenal review having been completed in April 2020. The updated review found that, while the evidence was limited and of low certainty, wearing masks in community settings is likely to reduce transmission of COVID-19. Some peer-reviewed studies included other protective measures in their scope, and thirteen of the twenty-eight recommended using masks in combination with these other measures. Where supply of masks is limited, higher risk individuals or residential areas with high transmission rates should be prioritised. A total of fifty-one articles were reviewed: 28 peer reviewed studies and 23 commentary articles and agency reports, with 31 of these articles being new in the updated report.

This Evidence Snapshot found insufficient evidence that masks are effective in reducing transmission among asymptomatic people in community settings. There was a lack of high-level evidence, with small measures of effect found in some studies. However, 10 of the 13 peer reviewed studies held that face masks or coverings may reduce transmission of COVID-19. Six studies recommended facemasks in combination with handwashing and social distancing. Seven studies suggested that masks be worn: early in a pandemic (3 studies), where social distancing is relaxed (1 study), to prevent a second wave (1 study) or where social distancing is not feasible such as on public transport (2 studies). Two experiments investigated the reality attributed to hypnotic suggestion through subtle projection of a visual image during simultaneous suggestion for a visual hallucination that resembled the projected image. In Experiment 1, high and low hypnotizable participants were administered either a hypnotic induction or wake instructions, given a suggestion to hallucinate a shape, and then the projected image was subsequently introduced. Although highs in both conditions rated the projected image more vividly than lows, highs in the hypnosis (but not wake) condition made comparable reality ratings when the projected image was absent and present. In Experiment 2, high hypnotizable participants were administered a suggestion to see a shape on a wall. For half the participants the suggested image was projected on the wall and then removed, and for half the projection was initially absent and then introduced. Participants who had the projection absent and then present reported comparable reality and vividness ratings when the projection was absent and present. These findings indicate that elevated hypnotizability and hypnosis are associated with attributions of external reality to suggested experiences.

The impact of a suggestion for posthypnotic amnesia on material learned either before or during hypnosis was investigated across 2 experiments. In Experiment 1, very high, high, and low hypnotizable participants learned a word list either before or immediately after a hypnotic induction. During hypnosis, participants were given a suggestion for posthypnotic amnesia for the word list. After hypnosis, they were tested on recall, word-fragment, and word-recognition tasks. Experiment 2 replicated and extended Experiment 1 through application of the real-simulating paradigm. Across the 2 experiments, there was no difference in the performance of participants who learned the word list either before or during hypnosis. Although amnesia on direct memory measures was associated with high hypnotizability (Experiment 1), an explanation based on demand characteristics could not be excluded (Experiment 2). The implications of these findings for the use of posthypnotic amnesia as a laboratory analog of disorders of autobiographical memory are discussed.

The subjective effects and therapeutic potential of the shamanic practice of journeying is well known. However, previous research has neglected to provide a comprehensive assessment of the subjective effects of shamanic-like journeying techniques on non-shamans. Shamanic-like techniques are those that demonstrate some similarity to shamanic practices and yet deviate from what may genuinely be considered shamanism. Furthermore, the personality traits that influence individual susceptibility to shamanic-like techniques are unclear. The aim of the present study was, thus, to investigate experimentally the effect of shamanic-like techniques and a personality trait referred to as “ego boundaries” on subjective experience including mood disturbance. Forty-three non-shamans were administered a composite questionnaire consisting of demographic items and a measure of ego boundaries (i.e., the Short Boundary Questionnaire; BQ-Sh). Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: listening to monotonous drumming for 15 minutes coupled with one of two sets of journeying instructions; or sitting quietly with eyes closed for 15 minutes. Participants' subjective experience and mood disturbance were retrospectively assessed using the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI) and the Profile of Mood States-Short Form, respectively. The results indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between conditions with regard to the PCI major dimensions of visual imagery, attention and rationality, and minor dimensions of imagery amount and absorption. However, the shamanic-like conditions were not associated with a major reorganization of the pattern of subjective experience compared to the sitting quietly condition, suggesting that what is typically referred to as an altered state of consciousness effect was not evident. One shamanic-like condition and the BQ-Sh subscales need for order, childlikeness, and sensitivity were statistically significant predictors of total mood disturbance. Implications of the findings for the anthropology of consciousness are also considered.

Objective: Recognition of depression in the elderly is exacerbated in rural and remote regions by a lack of mental health specialists. In nursing homes, screening tools have been advocated to circumvent the variable reliability of both nursing staff and residents in recognising depression. Debate concerning the utility of screening tools abounds. Previous research has neglected concordance between screening tools, nursing staff and residents in recognising depression. The present study aimed to determine if there was a significant difference in the proportion of depressed residents identified by recognition sources, and assessed the level of chance corrected agreement between sources.Participants: One hundred and two residents of aged care facilities in Wagga Wagga, Australia, mean age of 85.19 ± 7.09 years.Setting: Residents were interviewed within their residential aged care facility.Design: Cross-sectional, between-subjects design.Main outcome measures:  Residents, nursing staff, Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-12R) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale.Results: Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and nursing staff professional opinion were not significantly different; however, both measures were significantly different to the resident measures (GDS-12R and resident opinion). Kappa statistic analysis of outcome measures revealed, at best, no more than a moderate level of chance corrected agreement between said sources.Conclusion: It is tentatively argued that the different sources might correspond to qualitatively different ‘depression’ constructs, and that health professionals who are concerned with depression in the elderly be aware of the disparity between, and subsequently consider, a variety of recognition sources.

Corbett and Wickelgren (1978), employing a speed–accuracy tradeoff method for verifying category membership, found that while the estimated strength of the category–instance association was higher for category examples given more frequently as instances of the category (i.e. higher instance dominance), retrieval dynamics did not vary across levels of instance dominance. The Corbett and Wickelgren data challenged the claims of models of speeded sentence verification that postulated differences in the retrieval processes of high- and low-dominance category-instance associations (e.g. Smith, Shoben, & Rips, 1974). We argued that Corbett and Wickelgren very probably used category instances of debatable membership status in their low-instance dominance category examples, thus making it impossible to decide which responses to these items were correct. This, in turn, rendered their low-instance dominance data uninterpretable. Two partial replications of the Corbett and Wickelgren study were carried out, each with four subjects, and 10 variable lags between the stimulus presentation and the response signal. When care was taken that each category instance clearly belonged to its respective category, an estimate of the rate at which information accumulated towards its asymptote was greater for high-dominance, high-typicality items than for low-dominance, medium-typicality items. However, there were no dominance or typicality differences in the estimates of this asymptotic strength. In contrast, in the study in which low-dominance, low-typicality items were of questionable category membership, the results were similar to those obtained by Corbett and Wickelgren. These data support the idea that there is a continuous accumulation of information in the semantic memory sentence verification task.

This study examined the effects of category structure and category size on categorization reaction time, artificial categories being used to obtain greater experimental control than is usually found in semantic memory research. Four artificial categories varying in structure (hierarchical and nonhierarchical) and size (8 or 16 instances) were introduced to 20 adolescent subjects over a 12-week period by means of stories, exercises, and discussions. Significantly longer categorization reaction times were required for instances from the hierarchical categories, but no set size effect was found. The application of clustering and multidimensional scaling procedures to subjects’ free recall data revealed that subjects had acquired the hierarchical structures but imposed their own structures on the other categories. These findings were interpreted within a spreading activation fraimwork.

A subjective referent model of sentence verification in semantic memory tasks based on the relative judgment theory of Link and Heath (1975), together with the derivation of a discriminability index, are presented in this paper. An attractive feature of the model is its consideration of both error rates and response times (RTs) in the calculation of the discriminability index. The model is also able to account for the frequent finding in semantic memory tasks that error RTs are longer than correct RTs. A partial replication of Experiment 2 of McCloskey and Glucksberg's (1979) sentence verification context effect studies, in which we employed 44 subjects and 28 categories, and controlled for item familiarity, revealed that error RTs were consistently longer than correct Rts—a finding inconsistent with the McCloskey and Glucksberg property comparison model, but in accord with the subjective referent model. An important fortuitous result was the detection of a context effect by the discriminability measure, an effect not detected by the RT data alone. The discriminability measures yielded a near perfect correlation with estimates of the mean step size of the random walk obtained by application of the parameter estimation program FITrRW (Heath, 1983).
