Practical Mind Body Skills for Teachers - Promoting Resilience, Managing Stress, Preventing Burnout, and Cultivating Compassion

Workshop Description

Are you looking to harness life-long tools for living fully, despite the daily challenges and demands of the teaching profession? In this virtual workshop, PK-12 teachers and administrators will have the opportunity to slow down, relax the body, quiet the mind, and open the heart to a practice of wellbeing and mindfulness. This is a facilitated, small group workshop with no more than twenty participants per cohort. This workshop is meant to help you prevent burnout while promoting resilience and emotional intelligence, mobilize your inner resources for healing pain and illness, develop a portable toolkit of self-care practices, learn non-substance approaches for managing stress, explore the values that inform your life and work, and cultivate your overall happiness, peace, and compassion.

Facilitated by John A. Patterson MD, MSPH, FAAFP, ABIHM, you will be guided through four virtual sessions of mindfulness skill building including, but not limited to: body scanning, mindful eating, mindful communication, gentle yoga, and meditation. No prior knowledge of any of these skills is required. Each session is 75 minutes long, and requires you to be in a quiet, stationary space with limited chance for interruption. Participants who complete this workshop will receive five hours of professional development hours.

Workshop Requirements

This is an experiential, virtual workshop. In order to best apply the skills taught each week, please join each session from a stationary, quiet place with limited distractions. Carving out 75 minutes of mindfulness for yourself is the goal, therefore driving or multitasking during sessions is highly discouraged

Instructor Bios

Dr. John Patterson majored in psychology at Vanderbilt and has viewed medical practice through that mind body lens ever since, including residencies in family medicine and preventive medicine and a masters degree in public health. He is certified in family medicine, integrative holistic medicine, mind body medicine, mindfulness-based stress reduction and yoga therapy. He comes from a family of teachers and has considered education central to his medical career.

He spent many years in Estill County/Irvine, Kentucky, where his staff included a nurse practitioner, a mental health counselor and dietitian.

He is past president of the Kentucky Academy of Family Physicians and teaches stress management for the U of Kentucky Health and Wellness Program, Saybrook College of Integrative Medicine and Health Sciences (Pasadena) and the Center for Mind Body Medicine (Washington DC). He operates the Mind Body Studio in Lexington, where he offers consultations and classes for persons with stress-related chronic conditions and burnout prevention for health professionals, teachers, businesses, faith communities and non-profits- emphasizing a mindfulness-based approach to promoting resilience, managing stress, preventing burnout and cultivating compassion.
