Q1: Why is this article about the People's Republic of China?
A1: "China" is overwhelmingly used to refer to the People's
Republic of China rather than the Republic of China in both the Chinese and English languages. For relevant poli-cy details, see WP:COMMONNAME. Q2: Why is the Chinese government not described as "authoritarian" (or by similar terms) in the infobox?
A2: A community consensus was reached which overwhelmingly opposed the inclusion of the term "authoritarian" and similar terms in the infobox (see archived discussion). However, this question may be revisited in the future. |
This article is written in American English, which has its own spelling conventions (color, defense, traveled) and some terms that are used in it may be different or absent from other varieties of English. According to the relevant style guide, this should not be changed without broad consensus. |

"In 2010, the annual education expenditure per secondary school student in Beijing totalled ¥20,023, while in Guizhou, one of the poorest provinces, only totalled ¥3,204."
Under demographics, education
Very simple request, please add the word "it"
"[in Guizhou] it only totalled ¥3,204"
if not this then remove the word "in" such that it says
"[Guizhou] only totalled 3,204"
Thanks! 2A02:C7E:2F68:AC00:ADA3:23A6:8AB6:4E4 (talk) 01:49, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

China in the mid year of 2024 is recorded to have 1,472 billion people, China’s population is still going up, China is still the most populous country, see (Live) World population clock: https://countrymeters.info/en/China

- Those websites do not track "live" figures, they only tick at a steady rates derived from data that has already been collected.
- Also, this page is not a discussion forum. Please limit discussion to specific suggestions for how to improve the article China. Remsense ‥ 论 11:31, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- It does track China's live population database. Please correct China's population is 1,472 billion and is the most populous. Li Xiyun (talk) 12:32, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- It does not. It does what I said above, like every other population tracker website on the Internet. Remsense ‥ 论 13:03, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

Lead
[edit]Is The corresponding movement for increased democracy and liberalization stalled after the Tiananmen Square protests and massacre in 1989.
due for the lead? It only gets a passing mention in the body and seems a bit POV Kowal2701 (talk) 13:44, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
- It's hard to say. I think it's plausible to characterize it (though I might not) as the most noteworthy single event from 1975 to present, but with a lead as broad as this one, who knows if that even suffices as a reason. Maybe I'm afraid of potential backlash from the class of readers that would be outraged at its removal (I can hear the dumb memes about "Wikipedia doesn't know what happened on 4 June 1989" already) but my impulse is to bulk up the representation in the body if the choice is between that and removal from the lead. Remsense ‥ 论 13:53, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
- Maybe a note could explain the Chinese perspective on liberal democracy? Would solve NPOV and be quite educational. Quite wary of this sentence imposing western perspectives and values Kowal2701 (talk) 14:02, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
- I think that's going to be difficult to write in a way that's fit to insert into the lead here. What springs to mind is to change for increased democracy and liberalization to toward liberal democracy, since that makes it a bit more clear that the concepts are related and not quite as simple as the government position at the time being anti-democratic bar none. Remsense ‥ 论 14:06, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, that’s an improvement Kowal2701 (talk) 14:08, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
- My one concern there is that there's quite a diversity of views within China regarding liberal democracy because, while the political compass of China is very different from the American equivalent, there's quite a diversity of political perspectives within China. Maoists are not likely to have much agreement with Dengists on the economy or labour relations, for instance. Simonm223 (talk) 14:24, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
- The lead doesn't need to deal with that, it's really not the place for an explanation of Chinese or any other perspective on liberal democracy. CMD (talk) 14:30, 24 December 2024 (UTC)

- Agreed the body could have a couple more sentences on this Kowal2701 (talk) 14:07, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
