9:30 a.m. – Check-in (UK Fine Arts Building)
10:00-11:00 a.m. – Guest Masterclass
11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. – Guest Masterclass
12:15 p.m. – Lunch
1:00-2:45 p.m. – Viola Ensembles Rehearsal
3:00-4:00 p.m. – Viola Day Recital (Singletary Center Recital Hall)

UK Viola Day Virtual Competition Guidelines

 
Eligibility & Divisions
When registering, please identify your group division using the chart below. Divisions are organized by playing level and are compatible with the Suzuki system.
 
How to Enter
  1. Select Your Repertoire
    • Choose a single piece or a movement from a larger work
  2. Record Your Performance
    • The recording must be done in a single take with no editing.
    • Ensure the camera clearly shows both your left hand and bow arm.
    • Memorization is not required.
  3. Submit Your Video
    • Upload your video to any online platform (e.g., YouTube, Google Drive).
    • Provide the video link on the registration form.
Competition Results & Performance Opportunities
  • Winners of each group division, along with selected students, will perform at the Viola Day Recital. Some may also be invited to participate in the masterclass.
  • Competition results will be announced the day before the event.
Accompanists
  • UK Viola Day does not provide pianists.
  • Winners performing in the recital must bring their own accompanists or contact Dr. Wu for recommendations.

GROUP DIVISIONS

  • Group A, Pre-College, Suzuki Books 1 and 2
  • Group B, Pre-College, Suzuki Books 3 through 4
  • Group C, Pre-College, Suzuki Books 5 and above
  • Group D, College Freshman and Sophomore
  • Group E, College Junior and Senior

Artists bio

Lauren Burns Hodges, “a distinguished violist with a refined, mellow tone” (American Record Guide), is currently Associate Professor of Viola at the University of Florida where she also coordinates and teaches Music Appreciation classes.  For six years prior, she was Lecturer in Viola at Valdosta State University, Principal Viola of the Valdosta Symphony, violist of the Azalea String Quartet, and Director of the South Georgia String Project.  She has performed and given masterclasses and body awareness workshops at universities, music festivals, and Viola Day events throughout the country and abroad in Italy, Austria, France, and China. Dr. Hodges has regularly presented, taught masterclasses, or performed at national American Viola Society Festivals, Primrose International Viola Competition and Festivals, the College Music Society Southern Conference, and the 47th International Viola Congress. Passionate about promoting the viola and engaging with the community, she hosts an annual viola day at UF. www.laurenburnshodges.com
 
Violist Hannah Levinson is an in-demand performer of contemporary and classical music based in Ohio. She has recently been featured as a soloist and chamber musician at The Venice Biennale Musica, Carnegie Hall, The Stone, 92Y, Miller Theater, Willamette Valley Chamber Music Festival, June in Buffalo, and the Andy Warhol Museum, and at international festivals including the Kroch Festival (Stockholm), Musikprotokol Festival (Graz), Projektgruppe Neue Musik (Bremen), and Festival Musica (Strasbourg). Hannah is a member of Talea Ensemble and a founding member and Executive Director of the violin/viola duo andPlay. Shefrequently performs with NYC ensembles including the International Contemporary Ensemble, either/or, counter)induction, Heartbeat Opera, Cantata Profana, Contemporaneous, and The Rhythm Method Quartet. Hannah is currently Assistant Professor of Viola at Bowling Green State University. She earned degrees at Oberlin College and Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, and NYU Steinhardt.
