Medieval Frisian law texts offer interesting information on schemas of the body and body metaphor... more Medieval Frisian law texts offer interesting information on schemas of the body and body metaphors. The body schemas that are discussed in this contribution concern the six limbs (eyes, hands, and feet), the diaphragm as a horizontal axis, and the schemas of the teeth and the hand. The body metaphors that can be found in these sources are THE LANDSCAPE IS A BODY and THE BODY IS A LANDSCAPE. This metaphor complex might be of Indo-European origen, and this leads to an attempt to analyse the corollaries of this: are we dealing with a long continuity of a cultural phenomenon or a case of human universals?
At the end of the 15th century-between 1484 and 1487-the core collection of medieval Frisian law ... more At the end of the 15th century-between 1484 and 1487-the core collection of medieval Frisian law texts was reproduced in the new technology of book printing that was spreading rapidly over Europe. It is unclear how many copies of this book were printed but today nine have survived. Printing this archaic collection of law texts was remarkable in itself, since many of these law texts had become more and more outdated since the beginning of the 15th century. Whatever its practical use, however, it did showcase the classical legal tradition of the Frisians which was so intrinsically connected to the famous Frisian Freedom, the autonomy which the Frisian lands had enjoyed since the 11th century. The book became generally known as Freeska Landriucht or 'Frisian land law'. In Old Frisian studies it is generally referred to as Druk ('printed book'), since this is the only printed work among the Old Frisian law manuscripts. In this introduction I will first provide some context by sketching medieval Frisia and its society. A short overview f classical Old Frisian law follows, in which I also try to describe some of the peculiarities of legal procedure. This is intended as an aid to better understand the texts presented in this edition. Needless to say, this introduction to medieval Frisia and Frisian law can by its very nature be no more than concise. Next I will focus on the book itself; first its history and what is known about the project of printing this collection of Old Frisian law texts and then a brief introduction to the various texts in Freeska Landriucht. Finally, I will explain the editorial principles for rendering the Old Frisian text. In 1617, the Frisian scholar Sibrandus Siccama (1571-1622) published an annotated edition of the ... more In 1617, the Frisian scholar Sibrandus Siccama (1571-1622) published an annotated edition of the Lex Frisionum, a legal text which had only come to light several decades before, thanks to the 1557 edition of Johannes Herold. In his annotations (written in Latin), Siccama compared paragraphs from the Lex Frisionum with various Old West Frisian law texts. In this process, he quoted several passages from these Old Frisian sources. Based on the evidence found in these quotations, we believe that Siccama did not borrow them from one of the Old West Frisian law manuscripts we know today - Jus Municipale Frisonum, Codex Unia or Freeska Landriucht / Druk - but from a manuscript he had access to but which is now lost. We suggest calling this manuscript ‘Codex Siccama’.

Although historians have recently tried to downplay the importance of the early medieval Frisian ... more Although historians have recently tried to downplay the importance of the early medieval Frisian king Redbad (Radbod in the Frankish sources, died 719), he has remained part of Frisian culture until this day. In the Old Frisian medieval sources, he is depicted as a heathen Danish Viking. In some of the folktales that were written down at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, however, he seems to have acquired certain Arthurian traits. These tales depict Redbad as the prototypical king of all Frisians, sleeping in a hill and waiting for the moment the Frisians are in such distress that he must come to the rescue. In 2004, Redbad was elected the most important Frisian of all times via an internet poll. What is it then about Redbad that makes it almost impossible to forget him?
