K.N. Lakshmisha
K.N.Lakshmisha is Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. His research interests spread around the general Computational thermofluids: specifically, in modeling and simulation of combustion processes. Sometimes, he dabbled in Lattice Boltzmann modeling of fluid flows.
Professor Lakshmisha studied mechanical engineering at Bangalore University (UVCE), holding National Merit Scholarship. Subsequently, he earned a Ph.D degree from Indian Institute of Science, for a thesis on flame propagation. Then he carried out postdoctoral research on turbulent combustion at the University of Cambridge, England (with Prof.K.N.C.Bray, FRS). In 1993, he returned to India and taught propulsion of aircraft and rockets at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur. Since 1995, Dr.Lakshmisha has been with the IISc. Here he teaches graduate courses on combustion and propulsion, and guides Ph.D students in related topics. He has spent visiting positions at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Politecnico di Milano, Technische Universiteit Delft and The University of Sydney.
Lakshmisha's contributions to combustion include understanding of Flammability limits, Turbulent autoignition, Solid propellant combustion and L*- instability, Lift-off in turbulent jet flames, and Spray flames.
Lakshmisha has received the P.S.Narayana medal and the Sabita Chaudhuri medal from Indian Institute of Science. He is a recipient of the merit award for research performance from Cambridge University. He has been a DFG and DAAD visiting researcher to Germany. He served on the Propulsion panel of Aeronautical R & D Board, Ministry of Defence, Government of India. He served as an Associate Editor (2009-2016) of Proceedings of the Combustion Institute (Elsevier) and International Journal for Sprays and Combustion Dynamics (Multi-science Publishing, UK). He is a member of the Organising Committee of the International Conference on Combustion and Energy Utilisation (ICCEU). He has contributed as reviewer to eminent journals on the subjects of combustion and propulsion. He is a member of the Combustion Institute and of Aeronautical Society of India.
Several students obtained PhD degree under Lakshmisha's guidance, and are now occupying eminent positions in academia and industry. The list includes Drs.Anilkumar,K.R (now at FluiDyn Ltd), Sreedhara Sheshadri (now Professor at IIT Bombay), Dhiraj Patil (now Assistant Professor at IIT Mandi), and Santanu De (now Assistant Professor at IIT Kanpur).
Lakshmisha's collaborators/mentors include Professors B.Rogg, R.W.Bilger, K.N.C.Bray, and F.T.M.Nieuwstadt.
