We investigate whether the post-IPO market performance of IPO stocks is related to the percentage... more We investigate whether the post-IPO market performance of IPO stocks is related to the percentage of shares issued to the public, namely, the public float. We demonstrate that a non-linear relation exists between the public float and post-IPO returns. Specifically, as public float increases, long-run returns decrease for low levels of public float and increase for high levels of public float. This relation persists even after controlling for various firm characteristics. The best long-term performers are firms that sell either very little or sell most of their stock in the IPO. We suggest that the choice of public float level creates a trade-off between incentives to insiders and power granted to outsiders. This trade-off determines the non-linear relation found between the public float and long-run returns.

Apesar de ter um valor significativo, a língua é um activo intangível cuja medição permanece difí... more Apesar de ter um valor significativo, a língua é um activo intangível cuja medição permanece difícil e imprecisa. O efeito da globalização e da aprendizagem ao longo da vida conduz a um desenvolvimento assimétrico com um conjunto reduzido de idiomas em expansão. A língua portuguesa tem um número crescente de utilizadores, sobretudo como segunda língua, sendo mesmo de aprendizagem obrigatória em diversos países. Para a sua avaliação, baseamo-nos numa abordagem ecléctica que inclui a perspectiva das externalidades de rede, do peso na actividade económica (em % do PIB) e da notoriedade das pessoas e marcas do espaço lusófono. Este estudo assenta num questionário dirigido a estudantes de português no mundo, na recolha de elementos estatísticos e na medição do peso da língua nas actividades económicas que integram o PIB nacional.

To realize common tactical picture in network-centered system, this paper proposes a layered arch... more To realize common tactical picture in network-centered system, this paper proposes a layered architecture for distributed information processing and a method for distributed track fusion on the basis of analyzing the characteristics of network-centered systems. Basing on the noncorrelation of three-dimensional measurement of surveillance and reconnaissance sensors under polar coordinates, it also puts forward an algorithm for evaluating track quality (TQ) using statistical decision theory. According to simulation results, the TQ value is associated with the measurement accuracy of sensors and the motion state of targets, which is well matched with the convergence process of tracking filters. Besides, the proposed algorithm has good reliability and timeliness in track quality evaluation.

Language is definitely a fundamental element in international communication, namely in multinatio... more Language is definitely a fundamental element in international communication, namely in multinational companies (MNC) which per se are “multilingual organizations” (Bjorkman et al. 2004). There are several research studies that stress its relevance in international business (Marschan, Welch, and Welch 1997; Marschan-Piekkari, Welch, and Welch 1999; Feely 2003; Domingues 2009; Harzing and Pudelko 2013; Ozolins 2003; Janssens, Lambert, and Steyaert 2004), both in (i) corporate communication and (ii) in the communication between company and other stakeholders in foreign markets (clients, suppliers, etc.). Moreover, this communication in multinational companies (MNCs) and international business environments very often deals with streams, sequences of decisions and resource commitments, formulated and articulated in specialized language, that might be not completely clear to all stakeholders.
However, it is also true that language management and the role of translation and of the translator in companies operating in foreign environments and mediating interlingual communication is often unseen and has been rarely explored, neither by researchers in international business (IB), or in translation studies, nor by linguists (Ozolins 2003).
This paper intends, therefore, to contribute to trans-disciplinary research on language and terminology management in international business (IB) and, most of all, help to the break the old paradoxes related to the (i) wrongly assumed self-sufficiency of language in professional and business communication situations and (ii) costs of investment in language.
We will present results of two empirical studies that describe some language management and business translation practices in companies operating in foreign markets. Finally, although it is still an ongoing research, we will give some insights on how language management and translation mediated communication can be more cost-effective in these kinds of environments.
