Eff ects of high water cadmium sulphate hydrate (3CdSO4 * 8H2O) (CdSO4) levels on the expression ... more Eff ects of high water cadmium sulphate hydrate (3CdSO4 * 8H2O) (CdSO4) levels on the expression of serum proteins and tissue histopathology of the European chub (Leuciscus cephalus) was investigated. Three groups of fish (control, 1 st , and 2 nd), each containing 10 animals, were placed in separate tanks containing no, 1 mg/L, and 2 mg/L CdSO4, respectively, for 10 days. At the end of the study period, blood samples were taken and sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) was performed. Fish tissue samples were taken then routinely processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin to observe histopathological changes. Depending on the increasing concentration of CdSO4, a gradual decrease in protein bands was determined. Inhibition of 35.3 kilodalton (kD) and 100.5 kD proteins in the 1st group and of 44.5 kD and 47.3 kD proteins in the 2 nd group was detected. Microscopic examination revealed degeneration in the secondary lamellar epithelia, hydropic degeneration and necrosis in chloride cells of the fish gill in CdSO4 given groups. Hydropic degeneration and necrosis were also observed in light to severe levels in the liver depending on the groups. It was concluded that CdSO4 has toxic eff ects on the expression of serum proteins and causes degenerative changes on gill and liver morphology in Leuciscus cephalus.

Makroskobik incelemede karin boslugundaki serozalarda hiperemi ve rumende ise kenarlari kanamali 7 cm capinda ulser belirlendi. Her iki bobregin yuzeyinde 1-2 mm buyuklugunde boz-beyaz renkte odaklar gozlendi. Mikroskobik incelemelerde bobreklerde glomerulus, tubulus ve akitici kanal bazal membranlari ve damar duvarlarinda, dalakta folikullerde, karacigerde Disse araliginda ve ince barsaklarda lamina propriyada pembe renkte, homojen ve amorf yapida birikimler gozlendi. Bu birikimlerin Kongo kirmizisi ile tugla kirmizisi renkte boyandiklari, potasyum permanganat ile muamele edildikten sonra Kongo kirmizisi ile boyanmadiklari gorulerek AA-amiloidoz (sekonder amiloidozis) oldugu kanisina varildi. %10’luk formaldehitte bulunan stok doku parcalarinin Lugol ve sulfirik asitle muamele edilmeleri sonucunda amiloid birikimlerinin koyu mavi renkte olduklari gozlendi. Rumende ulserasyonla birlikte generalize amiloidoz saptanan bu olguda, amiloid birikimlerinin makroskobik olarak sadece taze dokularda degil formaldehit solusyonunda tespit edildikten sonra da gosterilebilecegine dikkat cekilmistir.
Three naturally ethylene glycol (EG)-intoxicated geese were investigated for pathological changes... more Three naturally ethylene glycol (EG)-intoxicated geese were investigated for pathological changes, nitrosative tissue damage and apoptotic cell death. Severe degeneration of kidney tubular epithelium and congestion of kidney and liver tissues were observed. Immunohistochemical staining for inducible nitric oxide synthase and nitrotyrosine revealed strong immunoreactivity with both antibodies in kidney and liver tissues compared with the weak immunostaining in the control animals. In both tissues of the EG-intoxicated geese, erythrocytes were also highly immunoreactive with nitrotyrosine antibody. A high degree of apoptotic cell death was present in the kidney tubule epithelium of EG-intoxicated geese. Some apoptotic cells were also observed in the liver. These results show that nitrosative tissue damage and apoptotic cell death takes place in kidney and liver during EG intoxication in geese.

This study was conducted to evaluate the pathological changes in broilers fed a diet containing l... more This study was conducted to evaluate the pathological changes in broilers fed a diet containing low-levels of aflatoxin (AF) and clinoptilolite (CLI) until 42 days of age. A total of 576 one-day-old Ross-308 type broiler chicks were treated with varying levels of AF and CLI (15 g kg À1). The gross and histopathological changes in the liver, kidneys, spleen, thymus and bursa of Fabricius were investigated and relative organ weights were calculated. Compared to controls, significant changes (P < 0.05), such as slight to moderate hydropic degeneration and/or fatty change (8 cases of 10), bile-duct hyperplasia (7 of 10) and periportal fibrosis (5 of 10), were found in chicks fed 100 ppb AF-containing diet. No gross–pathological changes were observed in any treatments. The addition of CLI to the 100 ppb AF-containing diet significantly decreased the number of affected broilers and/or the severity of lesions (hydropic degeneration and bile-duct hyperplasia) in the livers (P < 0.05). The addition of CLI to the AF-free diet did not produce any significant lesions compared with the controls.

We evaluated the efficacy of yeast glucomannan (Mycosorb Õ ), incorporated into the diet at 0 . 5 and 1 g/kg, in reducing the detrimental effects of 2 mg aflatoxin/kg diet on growing broiler chicks from 1 to 21 d of age. 2. A total of 240 male broiler chicks (Ross-308) was divided into 6 treatment groups [Control, Aflatoxin (AF), Yeast glucomannan (YG; 0 . 5 g/kg), AF plus YG (0 . 5 g/kg), YG (1 g/kg), and AF plus YG (1 g/kg)]. 3. Ten chicks from each of the 6 groups were slaughtered and pathological examinations were performed on the liver, bursa of Fabricius, thymus, spleen and kidney. 4. The aflatoxin treatment caused moderate to severe hydropic/fatty degeneration in the hepatocytes of the liver and the tubular epithelium of the kidneys, and follicular depletion in the bursa of Fabricius, thymus and spleen. 5. Yeast glucomannan added to the aflatoxin-containing diet at 0 . 5 and 1 g/kg diminished the severity of pathological changes, slightly and moderately, respectively. The number of affected organs was also reduced in the group given 1 g/kg yeast glucomannan, compared to the aflatoxin group. 6. These results show that yeast glucomannan effectively diminished the adverse effects of aflatoxin on the pathological changes and that the higher concentration of yeast glucomannan (1 g/kg) was more effective than the lower concentration (0 . 5 g/kg) and itself had no adverse effect.
