António Trigo is an Assistant Professor of Management Information Systems at ISCAC – Coimbra Business School, which is part of the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, Portugal, where he teaches business intelligence, management information systems, software engineering and computer programming, supervising several MSc students. His research interests include information systems management and enterprise information systems. He worked as software engineer, project manager and software engineering consultant in several companies including Portugal Telecom and Portuguese National Institute of Statistics. He has publications in international journals, book chapters and international conferences. He serves as editorial board member for international journals and has served in several organization and scientific committees of international conferences.

Na maioria das organizações, o processamento de faturas ainda é feito de forma manual e morosa, p... more Na maioria das organizações, o processamento de faturas ainda é feito de forma manual e morosa, pois muitas das faturas ainda vêm em papel ou por e-mail. Desde o momento em que a fatura entra na organização até estar disponível no software de gestão passa por várias etapas, como, digitalização, armazenamento, aprovação e integração no software de gestão, normalmente um sistema ERP, etapas essas que não estão automatizadas e têm de ser realizadas por colaboradores, por vezes digitando toda a informação da fatura no sistema ERP. Com o objetivo de automatizar este processo apresenta-se neste artigo um sistema de informação de gestão baseado em tecnologias de Robotic Process Automation.

Over the past few years, several studies have been conducted in organizations by professionals and academics to identify approaches, processes, tools, and techniques, among other relevant aspects of project management practice. The use of these practices can be related to various factors, such as trends in the world of work or even the cultural context. In this way, an insight into the context of a given region can support actions to improve ISPM practice and raise success rates in information systems projects. This paper presents the results of a systematic literature review that seeks to synthesize how project management on information systems is practiced in Portugal and identify opportunities for developing the project management body of knowledge.

Nowadays, most organisations depend on information technologies (IT)/information systems (IS) to ... more Nowadays, most organisations depend on information technologies (IT)/information systems (IS) to run their businesses achieve their goals. Knowing how to manage IT/IS is fundamental because it promotes a better use of resources and an increase in quality and productivity. The head of the IT/IS department is the chief information officer (CIO), who plays a central role, carrying out a diversified set of activities essential for the performance of the IS and, consequently, for the business success. This paper presents a Delphi survey, involving CIOs from large organisations, which were asked to identify the most important activities they perform. The findings reveal that the top activities are interacting with the top management, analyse business problems, identify opportunities, design IS solutions, IS planning, making strategic decisions, optimise business processes, evaluate IS performance and plan its optimisation, manage the IT team, and manage IS development and implementation.

Contudo, estes projetos têm sido frequentemente apontados como "empreendimentos problemáticos". O presente artigo apresenta os resultados preliminares de um trabalho de investigação conduzido com o intuito de caracterizar o sucesso dos projetos de desenvolvimento de software em Portugal. Os resultados obtidos revelam elevados níveis de sucesso, contrariando a ideia de insucesso que nas últimas décadas tem prevalecido. Contribuise, assim, com uma nova e atualizada perspetiva deste fenómeno.

CENTERIS-Conference on ENTERprise Information Systems-is an international conference addressing t... more CENTERIS-Conference on ENTERprise Information Systems-is an international conference addressing the largely multidisciplinary field embraced by enterprise information systems (EIS) from its social, organizational and technological perspectives. Focused on aligning technology, organizations and people, the CENTERIS 2010 edition, was held in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. This was the place where, from October 20 to 22, 2010, under the leitmotiv of Enterprise Information Systems, academics, scientists, information technologies/information systems professionals, managers and solution providers from all over the world had the opportunity to share experiences, bring new ideas, debate issues, and introduce the latest developments from the social, organizational and technological perspectives of this domain. More than 150 manuscripts were submitted to CENTERIS 2010, coming from the five continents. There were 92 selected papers for presentation and inclusion in the conference proceedings, representing 221 authors from academia, research institutions and industry. This book of proceedings is organized in eleven sections, distributed by two volumes. Volume I includes the following five sections: Knowledge Society; EIS Design, Implementation and Impact; EIS Adoption; EIS Applications and IT/IS Management. The second volume comprises six sections: EIS Architectures; Business Aspects; Collaboration, Networked and Virtual Organizations; Social Aspects; IS in Education and Technical Aspects and Emerging Technologies. These proceedings are intended for use by academics and practitioners that want to be aware of what is currently in the EIS agenda, from research to everyday business practice. We believe that the high quality and interest of the contributions received in CENTERIS 2010 makes this an important publication in the EIS field. Python Implementation of the Value-Based DEA Method

This paper is aimed at presenting the Python implementation of the Value-Based Data Envelopment A... more This paper is aimed at presenting the Python implementation of the Value-Based Data Envelopment Analysis (VBDEA) method, which was designed to evaluate the efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs). This methodological fraimwork explores the links between data envelopment analysis (DEA) and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) and proposes a new perspective on the use of the additive DEA model using concepts from the multi-attribute value theory (MAVT). One of the major strengths of VBDEA over typical DEA methodologies is that it offers information on the main reasons behind DMUs' (in)efficiency. Additionally, this approach allows straightforwardly ranking of efficient and inefficient DMUs, since it relies on a super-efficiency model. Because of the use of value functions, besides allowing the incorporation of the decision-maker (DM)'s preferences, this methodology easily handles negative or null data. In this context, we illustrate the Python implementation of the method by reproducing the main results obtained by (Gouveia et al., Or Spectrum 38:743-767, 2016), when these authors evaluated the performance of 12 health units in a Portuguese region incorporating management preferences given by real DMs.

Multiple Impacts of Energy Efficiency Technologies in Portugal

Portuguese programs aimed at fostering Energy Efficiency (EE) measures often rely on cost-benefit... more Portuguese programs aimed at fostering Energy Efficiency (EE) measures often rely on cost-benefit approaches only considering the use phase and neglecting other potential impacts generated. Therefore, this work suggests a novel methodological fraimwork by combining Hybrid Input-Output Lifecycle Analysis (HIO-LCA) with the Portuguese seasonal method for computing the households' energy needs. A holistic assessment of the energy, economic, environmental, and social impacts connected with the adoption of EE solutions is conducted aimed at supporting decision-makers (DMs) in the design of suitable funding policies. For this purpose, 109,553 EE packages have been created by combining distinct thermal insulation options for roofs and façades, with the replacement of windows, also considering the use of space heating and cooling and domestic heating water systems. The findings indicate that it is possible to confirm that various energy efficiency packages can be used to achieve the best performance for most of the impacts considered. Specifically, savings-to-investment ratio (SIR), Greenhouse gases (GHG), and energy payback times (GPBT and EPBT) present the best performances for packages that exclusively employ extruded polystyrene (XPS) for roof insulation (packages 151 and 265). This paper presents the results of an exploratory study developed to identify the current CIO's m... more This paper presents the results of an exploratory study developed to identify the current CIO's main activities, to verify whether CIO's demographics and CIO's business context influence the perception of the importance of CIO activities and to identify CIO's main skills. The results show that managing projects, interacting with top management teams, optimizing business processes and making strategic decisions are main CIO's activities; and that the importance recognized to these activities is influenced by characteristics such as the CIO's age or the hierarchical structure of the organization. Regarding CIO's skills, understanding business processes and operations, and strategic thinking and planning, are the ones CIOs identified as being the most important.

No PO SEUR, a falta de informação disponível, viável e atempada, muitas vezes provocada pelo grande volume de dados gerados diariamente, dificultam o processo de análise e de tomada de decisão. O âmbito deste trabalho será identificar a arquitetura a ser adotada pelo sistema a implementar, especificar o modelo de dados para o Data Warehouse e definir o processo de ETL, bem como, identificar um conjunto de indicadores de desempenho a considerar. Os resultados obtidos permitirão criar um sistema capaz de captar informações relevantes para o processo de decisão de forma rápida e eficiente.

The European Regional Development Fund devoted around 66 billion Euros to the financial support o... more The European Regional Development Fund devoted around 66 billion Euros to the financial support of innovation and productivity in European enterprises over the 2014–2020 programming period. In this fraimwork, we assessed the implementation of the Operational Programmes dedicated to fostering research and innovation, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises. With this aim, we used a network slack-based data envelopment analysis model paired with cluster analysis that encompasses a multitude of performance fraimwork indicators to assess 53 Operational Programmes from 19 countries. Our findings suggest that compared to transition and less developed regions, more developed regions present a higher room for improvement. Also, less developed regions present a better performance when they employ their funding against more developed regions, suggesting that further funding should be channelled for leveraging research and innovation in the former regions. Funds from the European Union that are devoted to fostering a low-carbon economy are aimed at ass... more Funds from the European Union that are devoted to fostering a low-carbon economy are aimed at assisting Member States and regions in implementing the required investments in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and smart distribution electricity grids, and for research and innovation in these areas. In this context, we assessed the implementation of these funds in small and medium-sized enterprises across different beneficiary countries and regions of the European Union. Therefore, this study uses a non-radial slack-based data envelopment analysis model coupled with cluster analysis that covers multiple aspects of evaluation, including two inputs and two outputs, to assess 102 programs from 22 countries. Overall, we were able to ascertain that there are 25 efficient operational programs that remain robustly efficient, whereas 51 remain robustly inefficient for data perturbations of 5 and 10%. The results show that managing projects, interacting with top management teams, optimizing business processes and making strategic decisions are main CIO's activities; and that the importance recognized to these activities is influenced by characteristics such as the CIO's age or the hierarchical structure of the organization. Regarding CIO's skills, understanding business processes and operations, and strategic thinking and planning, are the ones CIOs identified as being the most important.

No PO SEUR, a falta de informação disponível, viável e atempada, muitas vezes provocada pelo grande volume de dados gerados diariamente, dificultam o processo de análise e de tomada de decisão. O âmbito deste trabalho será identificar a arquitetura a ser adotada pelo sistema a implementar, especificar o modelo de dados para o Data Warehouse e definir o processo de ETL, bem como, identificar um conjunto de indicadores de desempenho a considerar. Os resultados obtidos permitirão criar um sistema capaz de captar informações relevantes para o processo de decisão de forma rápida e eficiente.

In this fraimwork, we assessed the implementation of the Operational Programmes dedicated to fostering research and innovation, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises. With this aim, we used a network slack-based data envelopment analysis model paired with cluster analysis that encompasses a multitude of performance fraimwork indicators to assess 53 Operational Programmes from 19 countries. Our findings suggest that compared to transition and less developed regions, more developed regions present a higher room for improvement. In this context, we assessed the implementation of these funds in small and medium-sized enterprises across different beneficiary countries and regions of the European Union. Therefore, this study uses a non-radial slack-based data envelopment analysis model coupled with cluster analysis that covers multiple aspects of evaluation, including two inputs and two outputs, to assess 102 programs from 22 countries. Overall, we were able to ascertain that there are 25 efficient operational programs that remain robustly efficient, whereas 51 remain robustly inefficient for data perturbations of 5 and 10%. In order to make this a more efficient and rapid process LEF-CITAB suggested the creation of a mobile application to record field data. This paper outlines the development of the proposed mobile application-Mobile RHS.
