A Study of the Effectiveness of the HEC's English Language Teaching Reforms (ELTR) Project

This study deals with the effectiveness of the English Language Teaching Reforms (ELTR) project, ... more This study deals with the effectiveness of the English Language Teaching Reforms (ELTR) project, which was launched by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan in 2004. The purpose of the ELTR project was to enhance the teaching practices of English Language (EL) teachers teaching at the tertiary level. The project was divided into two phases: Phase I (2004-2010) and Phase II (2010-2013). In both phases, EL teachers were trained from various public colleges and universities across Pakistan. The teachers were offered long and short-term courses through which they could be professionally developed. The main aim of the current research was to trace the effectiveness of the project. For this purpose, this study adopted a qualitative methodology. Data was collected by carrying out semi-structured interviews with five English Language faculty members of a university who have received ELTR training. The interviews were thematically analyzed. The findings revealed that HEC has been trying to accomplish its set goals, but there are certain areas in which the goals have not been achieved due to loopholes.

This paper presents a critical discourse analysis of the novel written by an eminent 21st-century... more This paper presents a critical discourse analysis of the novel written by an eminent 21st-century female writer Bapsi Sidhwa. The text was analyzed critically in the backdrop of the checklist developed by the researcher. The findings reveal that a significantly tough language has been used for the depiction of men and women. Roles and responsibilities given to them have been found to be assigned on the basis of gender discrimination. Therefore, it is contended that colonialism still prevails in the form of social, economic and educational disparities in the third world countries as compared to the developed and privileged countries. Similarly, power structures have been found functional in every sphere of life and are decided by the institutions which hold the utmost power. Racism has also been revealed in the text. Ethnicity, race, color, culture and language have been found superiority over all the other ethnicities, cultures, races and languages.

This paper reports on a study carried out to explore challenges faced by primary level Language L... more This paper reports on a study carried out to explore challenges faced by primary level Language Learning Disabilities (LDs) students in learning English as a Second Language (ESL) in Pakistan. The data was collected through a quantitative (close-ended) questionnaire filled in by 100 and a qualitative (open-ended) questionnaire filled by 10 Primary English language teachers in Pakistan. The findings revealed that language LDs hinder the development of literacy and oral skills of primary ESL learners. The study concluded that in order to improve the English language learning of students with language LDs, there is a need to assure the provision of teacher training facilities, application of sensorial activities, and establishment of good rapport between the teaching staff, school administration and parents of students with language LDs.

The study was conducted in the light of a checklist based on the competencies and students’ learning outcomes given in the National Curriculum for English (2006), Pakistan. The competencies intended to enable learners to become fluent in their speech. The study was qualitative, and a thematic analysis approach was used to analyze the data. The findings of the research revealed that contradictory scenario. The textbook understudy does not allow learners to improve their aural/oral skills. The aural/oral competency was seen in some proportion. Still, reiteration was seen in the practice parts in which only dialogues were given repeatedly at the end of each unit of the textbook.

This research attempted to identify the psychological factors that affect the speaking performanc... more This research attempted to identify the psychological factors that affect the speaking performance of students enrolled in Postgraduate English Language Teaching programs in Pakistan. A quantitative approach was used to address the main aim of this study. The participants of the research were 100 postgraduate students enrolled in English Language Teaching (ELT) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programs of public sector higher education institutions and universities in Pakistan. The findings revealed that many students in this study reported finding it difficult to speak in English in foreign language classrooms due to psychological factors like lack of selfconfidence, lack of self-esteem, fear of making mistakes, shyness, anxiety and motivation mainly. The findings also revealed that almost all the psychological factors are interlinked with each other and have a direct effect on the speaking performance of the students in this study.

Competency (C), standards (S), benchmarks (B), and SLOs are the parameters given in the National Curriculum. A semi-structured checklist was developed by the researchers, validated by three experts from the relevant field, and improved in the light of experts’ opinion and pilot study findings. To evaluate the textbook competencies and their SLOs, the evidence was sought from the textbook, and remarks were given in the last column (remarks/analysis) of the checklist. A Study of English Language Syntactical Errors Committed by Pakistani Higher Secondary Science Students

Data was collected in the form of 12 written samples from intermediate students from two public sector colleges. The findings revealed that the most frequently committed error was punctuation error. On the other hand, the lowest committed errors were run-on sentences, object missing, and fragments errors. It was also found that the students committed a total of 232 errors. The syntactical errors identified in the corpus were: subject-verb agreement errors, word form errors, word order errors, object missing, run-on sentences, orthographic errors, fragments, punctuation errors, article errors, preposition errors and conjunction errors.
