Artist Opportunities

Request for Qualifications: Mural Opportunity: Kroger

Submission Deadline: January 25th, 2025

 

LexArts Inc. in association with Kroger, seeks an artist to create an indoor mural for a new Kroger grocery store.

Our goal is to select an experienced artist who will create artwork that will celebrate the spirit of the community and the unique identity of the neighborhood and its surroundings, to be installed at Kroger at 760 Newtown Springs Drive in July 2025.

There is no application fee to enter.

Project Budget

The artist fee is $10,000, this is an all inclusive fee paid to the artist as work for hire.  The artist fee will be paid half upon signing the contract and half upon project completion.

3 semi-finalists will be selected from the Request for Qualifications and paid $300 to deliver a site specific design for the mural.  One artist will be selected to produce the mural.

Project Materials

The artist will have the freedom to use thier choice of artist materials and will be responsible for purchasing supplies with the artist fee.  The mural is to be painted onto a substrate material offsite and delivered to the kroger store by the artist.  Kroger will coordinate with professional installers to mount the mural in the store.

Project Site

The selected site is Kroger #797 at 760 Newtown Springs Drive, Lexington, KY 40511.

1. A one page artist statement describing public art experience and interest in the project (optional but encouraged)

2. A current resume (required)

3. Up to 6 digital images of past murals with description of size, budget, year completed, location

Eligibility

Selection Process

The submitted qualifications will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of Kroger representatives. The committee will identify three artists as semi-finalists, who will be contracted to produce a site specific design. One artist will be selected for the mural commission.

Request for Qualifications: R.J. Corman Railroad Underpass Mural

Submission Deadline: January 18th, 2025

 

LexArts Inc. in association with the City of Lexington (District 6), seeks an artist to work with students at Bryan Station High School, throughout the semester, to design and paint a public mural on substrate material that will be installed on the walls of a railroad underpass.

 

Our goal is to select an experienced artist who will supervise, and work with students to design and paint murals throughout the spring school semester, to be installed on the railroad underpass at Old Paris Road in June 2025.

Project Budget

Compensation will be provided to the selected artist(s) at $50/hr with an anticipation of up to $35,000 for participation in the project. This wage includes the artist(s)’ time and effort for designing, painting, and working with students.

Project Materials

The artist will be provided with 40 Alumicore sheets, 4’ x 8’, along with mural paint and brushes, UV clear coat, and storage and protective materials.

Project Site

The selected site is: RJ Corman Underpass at 2190 Old Paris Rd, Lexington, KY. The mural will cover two spaces that are sized approximately 55’L x 12’H, with slight tapering on each end. The total area to be painted is approximately 1320 square feet. The mural will be painted on 40 Alumicore sheets, 4’ x 8’, and will be installed on the underpass after creation.

LexArts and the Lexington Pride Center are proud to announce Choosing Home: Dispatches from Lexington, KY. Inspired by the creative ways that LGBTQ+ people define, envision, and choose family, our exhibition will document the complex, vibrant, and queer homes we build and lives we live in Central Kentucky today. The show aims to celebrate Lexington’s rich LGBTQ+ histories by focusing on the triumphs, possibilities, and challenges of our queer present.

Submission Guidelines
  • Theme: All submitted artworks must relate to the LGBTQ+ Culture and experience in Lexington
  • Mediums Accepted: We welcome a variety of mediums, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and digital art.
  • Artist Statement: Each submission must include an artist statement (up to 300 words) detailing how the piece is related to the LGBTQ+ Community. This statement should provide insight into the inspiration behind the work and its connection to the theme.
  • Submission Format: Digital images of the artwork should be submitted in high resolution (300 dpi) along with the artist statement. Please include the title, medium, dimensions, and year of creation for each piece.
  • Number of Submissions: Each artist may submit up to three artworks. A series of work may be submitted and will count as a single submission.
Eligibility

Artists must be 18 years of age or older, may work in any medium, and claim a personal connection to both Lexington, KY (now or in the past) and an LGBTQ+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, transgender, non-binary, aro/asexual, queer, and more). We welcome emerging and established artists.

About the Juror

Bio: Wylie Caudill is a Lexington-based visual artist and member of the LGBTQ+ Community in Lexington. Caudill is best known for his mural work and his floral designs. Caudill is recognized locally as the official artist of the 2024 Kentucky Derby, and through his collaboration with the University of Kentucky. Caudill was recently featured in a solo show at LexArts titled “Patterns in Bloom” in September 2024.

The John G. Irvin Gallery was created to promote Kentucky’s visual artists and opened in March 1987. The creation of the gallery was a labor of love and a passion of the late Irvin, a Lexingtonian and former employee of Central Bank. Over the years the gallery has hosted exhibitions by Kentucky’s finest artists, as well as new and emerging artists exhibiting for the first time. As the local arts council, LexArts provides a wide range of programs designed to integrate the arts into our daily lives, including Gallery Hop, LexArts Gallery at ArtsPlace and public art projects, and offers affordable creative and performance space for artists and organizations.
