How Will OpenAthens Improve Access?
OpenAthens will improve access in the following ways:
- Access via Library catalog
- Access via Library A-Z database list
- Access via Publisher Websites
Access via Library Catalog:
Electronic resources that are enabled within OpenAthens in the library catalog will have the following note of being an NOAA Single-Sign-On Required. All other electronic resources require that you continue to use IP authentication to access, requiring that you are either on a NOAA provided VPN while working remotely or in a NOAA office or lab to access such resources.
With the library catalog you can login to OpenAthens either (1) directly when you enter the site or (2) when you accessing a SSO enabled resource during a browsing session.
You can sign into the library catalog at the top right of site when first visiting.
You may find that it useful to sign in to the catalog when first entering if you are conducting research and will not be prompted for your NOAA SSO credentials when clicking on a SSO enabled resource. Additionally, you can save your search history as well as large batches of export records via RIS, BibTeX, and Excel (see more info here).
Logging via SSO at the point of locating a SSO enabled may be a more suitable approach of you a browsing for specific article or topic and are necessarily on a research heavy path.
OpenAthens enabled resources are marked are in the resources note field.
Access via Library A-Z Database:
After choosing any OpenAthens enabled resource on the Library A-Z list you are prompted to select NOAA Single Sign On (SSO) or Library catalog (username and password). You should select SSO.
OpenAthens enabled resources are labeled are in the Library's A-Z Database list with an OpenAthens icon.
Access via Publisher Websites:
For OpenAthens enabled resources, NOAA Staff can access NOAA Library electronic resources directly from the publisher websites. Publisher site’s will vary, but in general you will login using their site's Institutional Login. Through this login method, you will search for NOAA Library when prompted to search for select your affiliated organization.
As both videos demonstrate below below, you can either login at the point when immediately visiting the site or when accessing an article.
