I'm interested in microstructures and what they reveal about mineral growth and deformation mechanisms. Over the last few years I have been working on garnet/quartz in metamorphic rocks and on sulphide minerals in ore deposits. I have just started looking at microstructures developed in cementless sustainable concretes.

In a scanning electron microscope (SEM) an electron beam sets up an omni-directional source of sc... more In a scanning electron microscope (SEM) an electron beam sets up an omni-directional source of scattered electrons within a specimen. Diffraction of these electrons will occur simultaneously on all lattice planes in the sample and the backscattered electrons (BSE), which escape from the specimen, will form a diffraction pattern that can be imaged on a phosphor screen. This is the basis of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Similar diffraction effects cause individual grains of different orientations to give different total BSE. SEM images that exploit this effect will show orientation contrast (OC). EBSD and OC imaging are SEM-based crystallographic tools.

Reports of chloride substitution in common natural sulphides are lacking but are predictably infl... more Reports of chloride substitution in common natural sulphides are lacking but are predictably influenced by key variables in hydrothermal systems including T, pH, Eh aCl-, and aHS-. Materials scientists have long recognized that "II-VI compounds" (e.g. sphalerite) may accommodate halogens with charge balance maintained by cation deficiencies (e.g. Zn1- 0.5xS1-xClx). The majority of around 200 analyses of sphalerite from the Century Zinc mine (NW Queensland) reveal chlorine above electron microprobe detection limits with a maximum of ca 2200 ppm. The analyses support the Zn deficiency substitution although a small subset reveal a 1:1 (molar) correlation of Cl with the highest (Cu+Ag) implying an additional coupled substitution mechanism. Colloform sphalerite from the Galmoy mine (Ireland) has variable concentrations of Cl up to 6000 ppm in growth zones also displaying variations of Fe and Cd. Implications of electron backscatter diffraction study for interpretation of common sulphide mineral textures

Interpretation of mineral textures is an important part of understanding any ore deposit. Current... more Interpretation of mineral textures is an important part of understanding any ore deposit. Currently, this mostly involves viewing polished surfaces using a reflected light microscope (sometimes with etching) coupled sometimes with collecting backscatter electron images in a scanning electron microscope and chemical maps using an electron microprobe and rarely with transmission electron microscopy. It is now possible, routinely, to collect crystallographic information at the sub-micron scale to an accuracy typically better than 1º using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Crystallographic data acquired by EBSD help to constrain the interpretation of textures (primary and secondary), commonly providing solutions not contemplated using other analytical methods.

ABSTRACT The studied sample presents garnet textural sector-zoning as inclusions in two types in ... more ABSTRACT The studied sample presents garnet textural sector-zoning as inclusions in two types in garnet schist from Morlaix, North-West Brittany, France. Crystal size distributions (CSD) of quartz crystals were measured in both types inclusions, in the matrix and strain shadows around garnet porphyroblasts using Back-scatter electron (BSE) images. The CSD plots of quartz crystals show an increase of average in sizes from type 1 inclusion, 60 μm, to the matrix,116 μm, and strain shadow, 248 μm,. These differences could be explained of quartzes size distribution by many processes such as capturing by pophyroblast, crystal face, annealing and grain boundary migration .
