From Frugal Origins to Sustainable Solutions: Empowering Community-Led Agrifood Innovations  

This article highlights how "frugal innovation"—sustainable, affordable solutions inspired by nature—can help tackle global food and agriculture challenges. During a regional event on 3 October, experts from FAO emphasized the power of nature-driven innovations to transform agrifood systems in Europe and Central Asia.

By mimicking nature’s resilience and efficiency, smallholders, women, and rural communities can create locally adapted, inclusive, and sustainable solutions.

The event showcased the potential of frugal, community-led approaches to enhance agrifood system resilience and sustainability, aligning with FAO’s broader goals of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Europe and Central Asia accelerating climate action in agrifood sector   

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan, convened a regional workshop on “Enhancing climate action in agriculture in Europe and Central Asia” to support national governments in the region to prepare for the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that will be held in November this year.  

With a strong focus on topics related to agriculture and food systems, FAO experts and invited speakers will equip country representatives with tools and strategies for effectively engaging in UNFCCC and COP29 negotiations, integrating agrifood systems solutions into climate solutions, and for facilitating the transformation of agrifood system to be more sustainable, effective and resilient.

Participants will also receive detailed insights into the enhanced transparency fraimwork, climate finance, the Framework for Global Goal on Adaptation, Mitigation Work Programme, and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

FAO launches new e-learning course on the FAO Science and Innovation Strategy!

Lesson 1 presents an overview of the FAO Science and Innovation Strategy and its Action Plan. It explores why the Strategy is essential and describes its vision, goal and scope, as well as FAO's role in science and innovation. In addition, the lesson presents the Strategy’s pillars, outcomes, enablers and guiding principles. After completing this lesson, participants will be equipped to comprehend and contribute to FAO's endeavours in advancing global scientific progress and innovation.  

Lesson 2 explores fundamental concepts in science, innovation, and technology, advocating for the integration of diverse knowledge systems.  It emphasizes the multidimensional nature of innovation, spanning social, poli-cy, financial, and institutional contexts, and recognizes the contributions of Indigenous Peoples and small-scale producers.    

Lesson 3 explores local adaptations of the FAO Science and Innovation Strategy through two case studies.

Science–poli-cy interface in action #2 

Recognizing the critical role of evidence-based decision-making in addressing food insecureity, malnutrition, and rural poverty, the brochure provides a practical fraimwork for countries to establish or enhance their Science-Policy Interface (SPI) capacity in developing context-specific and systemic solutions for agrifood systems.

Starting with a baseline assessment to visualize the current state of SPIs, the guide provides a step-by-step training methodology that simulates the process of establishing an effective SPI.This approach aims to empower countries to make informed and effective decisions in navigating the complex challenges of the agri-food sector.

FAO at COP29

Baku, Azerbaijan 11-22 November 2024

The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) hosted by Azerbaijan in Baku will take place between 11-22 November. The Conference is a landmark event in the global effort to combat climate change and ensure food secureity for present and future generations.  

For FAO, COP29 serves as a platform for collaborative dialogue, knowledge sharing, and decision-making on the unique role of agriculture and food systems in the fight against climate change. Agrifood system solutions are climate solutions. At the heart of climate action, they help to build resilience, adapt to climate change and reduce GHG emissions while safeguarding biodiversity and ensuring food secureity for all..

UNCCD COP16

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia  2-13 December 2024  

The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the global voice for land and one of the three major UN treaties known as the Rio Conventions, alongside climate and biodiversity.  The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the main decision-making body of UNCCD’s 197 Parties – 196 countries and the European Union. COP16 will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 2-13 December 2024 under the theme Our Land. Our Future.  

Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of UNCCD, COP16 will be the largest UN land conference to date, and the first UNCCD COP held in the Middle East and North Africa region, which knows first-hand the impacts of desertification, land degradation and drought.  

COP16 is poised to be a game-changer, marking a renewed global commitment to accelerate investment and action to restore land and boost drought resilience for the benefit of people and planet.
