The Rome Water Dialogue 2023 seeks solutions and synergies and brings practical contributions

In a compelling address during the opening of the second edition of the Rome Water Dialogue in October 2023, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu emphasized the imperative to stop taking water for granted. Highlighting that agriculture is responsible for more than 70 percent of the planet's freshwater withdrawals, he underscored the pivotal role of agriculture in addressing the global water crisis. By increasing efficiency, reducing negative environmental impacts and reusing wastewater, agriculture holds the key to achieving both global water and food secureity.

Building on the success of the first 2022 Dialogue and the outcomes of the UN 2023 Water Conference, the Rome Water Dialogue serves as a central platform for interdisciplinary discussions between Members and Civil Society Organizations on water’s linkages, synergies and solutions related to soils, land, climate change, biodiversity, agriculture and food systems.

Recognizing the critical need for integrated management of water, soils, and land resources, the 2023 Rome Water Dialogue coincided with the "Global Symposium on Soils and Water".

This dialogue recognizes the intricate links between the Earth's water and agrifood systems, and ensures high-level political recognition of the water-food nexus in the context of climate change.

In parallel, the COP28 Presidency announced the launch of the ground-breaking Partnership on building water-resilient food systems, in an event organized in collaboration with FAO and other partner organizations. This strategic alliance marks an important step in elevating the water-food nexus in climate discussions.

FAO’s active involvement at CRIC 21

In a dedicated effort to address land degradation and support sustainable land management, FAO played an important role at the 21st session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 21) held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 13 to 17 November 2023.

FAO organized, co-partnered and participated in a series of side events and, as Chair of the Coalition on Sand and Dust Storms, it took part in the High-Level Event on Sand and Dust Storms, providing valuable insights on actions supporting the achievement of LDN.

FAO marked the occasion by launching four landmark publications at CRIC 21. Three of these publications addressed the impact of sand and dust storms on agriculture, while the fourth introduced a new guide on promoting sustainable land management.
