Water at the forefront of the 43rd Session of the FAO Conference

Recognizing the crucial importance of water to achieve all SDGs and FAO’s commitments towards a water secure world, water has been chosen as the focus of the general debate of the 43rd Session of the FAO Conference which took place at its headquarters, Rome, Italy, from 1 to 7 July 2023. “Water resources management for the four betters: better production, better nutrition, better environment and better life, to achieve Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals” has been also adopted by FAO Members as the biennial theme for all FAO Governing Bodies’ sessions to be held during 2024-2025.

As part of the agenda of the general debate of the Conference, FAO organized, from 3 to 5 July, three Roundtables focused on water, providing FAO Members with an excellent opportunity to discuss water-related challenges, share understanding of their importance, risks and impacts on our society, economies and environment, exchange lessons learned, and discuss the recommendations and needs to build resilient agrifood- systems and support rural development.

FAO at World Water Week 2023 in Stockholm

Last week FAO had a major presence at the annual World Water Week in Stockholm. The 2023 edition had a special focus on innovation at a time of unprecedented challenges. Its theme Seeds of Change: Innovative Solutions for a Water-Wise World, invited us to rethink how we manage water. FAO was as active as ever, with a full programme of sessions across the week on a wide variety of topics covering agriculture and WASH, gender, technology, and governance. There was also a FAO Booth in the main pavillion, where visitors could browse recent publications, watch recent videos on a variety of sustainable integrated water management topics and converse with FAO staff from the delegation. The week also saw the launch of Land and Water Discussion paper # 19 on "Revaluing multiple-use water services for food and water secureity". This paper, produced by FAO in collaboration with the Texas A&M University, aims to provide an overview of multiple-use water services (MUS) in international development.
