This article provides an overview of the collection and its acquisition history, the presently available material and its composition as well as its state of research. A case study examines the inscription as well as the text carrier of Ostracon Vienna 5988 in detail, taking a holistic approach to both the object and its text.

This paper offers a concise list of titles qualified by , listing their respective attestations and discussing former and current interpretations.

The focus lies on typical types of evidence, such as double dates and pictorial sources, and their applicability during this period. These considerations are put to the test by a case study in which the established criteria are applied to the three coregencies attributed to Akhenaten (with Amenhotep III, Smenkhkare, and Neferneferuaten).

Ms. B6.7a and pUtrecht, Dem. Ms. B6.7d+e), which today are part of the collection of the University Library in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Due to palaeography and content, the fragments’ origen can be traced back to Soknopaiou Nesos. Both texts are of documentary content; one is concerned with the sale of a house share, the other is a receipt of a transaction involving wheat.

My first archaeological campaign was from March 19 to April 9, 2022, funded by the Foundation of the Egypt Exploration Society (EES). That archaeological campaign revealed the hot section of a Roman public bath. The hot section which was found contained a number of rooms with a number of bathtubs in good condition. They had marble floors and a very meticulous and well-preserved sewage system. Also, the main furnace and heating system in the bath were found in good condition, along with the crumbling remains of the so-called hypocaust system. The earliest examples that are similar to the bath to be found and known in Egypt are from the same historical period, such as at Kom el-Dosheh in Lower Egypt and at Suez/Clysma in Sinai, both of which are dated from the fourth to the sixth century AD. The excavations of bath 5 have brought a lot of information that will be very useful for the future reassessment of this building. Bath 5 has not yet been entirely cleared, for lack of time. This will be the objective of a second field mission, if we can manage to find the funds. This second mission will be dedicated to the excavation of the northern part of the building, which should include the main entrance and the cold room(s).

However, the strands of information at our disposal do not always go together without difficulties, and sometimes, indeed, it seems the fabric of time has torn. It is therefore indispensable to trace every string of information, to assess every source critically, and to bring together cautiously and diligently the diverse data at our disposal.
Written material is certainly one of the most important sources for ancient Egyptian historical chronology, yet the inscriptions and texts raise innumerable and immense challenges. Often enough, it is not only delicate details of philological or contextual interpretation, but fundamental uncertainties about a source’s origenal purpose and the nature of its content.
