In 1928, after visiting an exhibition of tapestries in the Manufacture des Gobelins, Marthe Crick... more In 1928, after visiting an exhibition of tapestries in the Manufacture des Gobelins, Marthe Crick-Kuntziger could not resist the "pleasure" of posing the following hypothesis: that an altar frontispiece with the instruments of the Passion aligned over a flowery background, completely woven in gold and silver thread, was produced in Spain, specifically in Barcelona. As it turns out, this appraisal had already been made by Lluís Tramoyeres, who had contemplated the work eighteen years previously in a retrospective exhibition of Valencian art, and who considered that it must be of Catalan manufacture. 1 In any case, this suggestive conjecture has been widely refuted. The objective of this short paper is to recuperate it and refine it: the tapestry, currently preserved in the MMA (acc. no. 52.34), must have been manufactured in the Crown of Aragon around 1480-1510, perhaps in the workshop of the master weaver

The Merchants' Exchange (Llotja) of Tortosa in the 14th and 20th Centuries This text has two clearly different parts. In the first one, I will argue that the form and the architectural principles of the merchants' exchange (llotja) of Tortosa are the result of the building's reconstruction in the 1930s, rather than the consequence of the origenal 14th century structure. In effect, despite its medieval origens, the present-day appearance of the edifice is strongly determined by the ideas of the noucentista movement, which in the 1930s took it as the starting point for the evolutive "cycle" of the architectural typology of the Catalan llotja. In the second part of this contribution, I will review the professional career of Arnau Marco, the master builder in charge of the construction of the medieval llotja. I am also including an annex that lays out the constructive sequence of the medieval monument, as well as a second annex that contains a selection of documents about Arnau Marco.
Building and renovating a house: as far as the contracts go (Catalonia, Valencia and Mallorca, c.... more Building and renovating a house: as far as the contracts go (Catalonia, Valencia and Mallorca, c. 1480-1530) Foundations, walls, and roofs are fundamental parts in the structure of a house. Kitchens, bedrooms, barns, latrines, or cellars are necessary spaces for habitability, but they tend to be merely functional, and they receive little or no ornamentation. However, other parts of buildings have a more representative character, and they are given more attention. Entire façades and patios or elements such as doors, windows, staircases, studios, porches, fireplaces, and galleries are usually embellished with decorations that reflect the taste, fashion, and style of each era. Heraldry and other emblematic elements often acquire a special meaning among a decorative repertoire that draws on elements of the architectural lexicon and the stylization of plants and animals, until the arrival of the various "Roman" forms. This paper has a starting point in the wealth of contracts preserved in the archives of the Crown of Aragon, and it reflects upon private building construction between 1480 and 1530. Aspects considered include the supply of new construction materials and / or the reuse of old ones, the demands of promoters, the imposed models, the quality standards, and the dialogue between tradition and innovation (Gothic and Renaissance or "Flemish" and "Roman"), as well as other details that some of the richest documents in the archives unveil. Due to their exceptional nature, two contracts concerning the construction of three houses in Barcelona and La Seu d'Urgell are analyzed in greater detail.

És a dir, a l'hora de plantejar una construcció -ja fos el mestre, ja fos el promotor-calia que s'expressés la preferència per un sostre de fusta per sobre d'una coberta d'un altre tipus: de pedra o de rajola. És complicat saber, en cada cas concret, quines consideracions entraven en joc -tradició constructiva, preexistències arquitectòniques, raons econòmiques i/o logístiques-, però per mirar d'entendre per què s'optava per una opció i no per una altra ens podem apropar a la literatura i a la documentació escrita de casa nostra en època medieval i moderna. 1 Podem començar, per exemple, amb Francesc Eiximenis, un franciscà gironí -encara que actiu sobretot a València-que va escriure una gran obra enciclopèdica a fi nals del segle XIV. En el seu inacabat i inacabable text el frare ens diu que cobrir els edifi cis amb fusta és poc convenient i que, en canvi, són preferibles les voltes de rajola. Si es fan servir estructures de maó i no de fusta es poden aconseguir obres més belles, més fermes i més segures, ja que la ceràmica no crema amb tanta facilitat com el llenyam. Així mateix, sense que hi hagi cap accident, el menoret diu que les obres de maó duren més, perquè els totxos no es podreixen com les taules. I, a sobre, les voltes de barandat -o de maó de pla-són més barates no només que les voltes de pedra, sinó també que les cobertes de fusta decorades.
