The history of the city of São Lourenço do Sul has been told through the eyes of their training ... more The history of the city of São Lourenço do Sul has been told through the eyes of their training by german-pomeranians immigrants and establishing their colonies, forgetting the presence of other activities as the market made by the yachts which supplied the local port. The memory, the raw material of history selected from the individual and collective aspirations of this, the facts that should and can be recalled and/or forgotten, since both are constructions that occur in a field of power struggles. Thus, the memory of some groups of the city that somehow are linked to a mercantile and nautical past, has been neglected in this battleground. Noting the city, in its materiality and social life today, you can identify traces of these still active men who, through his work constituted part of town. In this sense, we in the cultural landscape and the remaining traces the history of social groups that have been forgotten and active in building a city that today it no longer remembers. Beside the application of methods and the growing debate linked to the study of memory and heritage in contemporary societies, also use the method of oral history. Through the materiality of culture and stories of people who lived through that time will seek to realize social relationships and daily work.

In fact, as current discussions in the fields of Anthropology, memory and cultural heritage suggest, remembering and forgetting are two faces of the same coin. Therefore, processes of identity claims, particularly those fostered in the context of tourism globalization and mass culture, may present the risk of oblivion to other less empowered social groups, therefore constituting a threat to the very tenets of diversity.
In this theoretical context social memory and the preservation of heritage references are dependent on contemporary social and political contexts in which remembering and forgetting are negotiated practices, part of heritage and identity strategies of a people. It is from this perspective that I seek to observe the importance of heritage public policies and their effects in the construction of collective memories opposed to the risk of social oblivion.
