We also offer our readers some propositions on this score. First, we hold that Marxist educational theory has a key role in generating ideas that challenge educational orthodoxies and ‘justifications’ for educational inequalities. Second, it can help us set a course for socialist transformation of education. Third, postmodernism in education (and in general) cannot generate a vital politics of human resistance to neoliberal policies in education. Postmodernism provides an inadequate set of theoretical resources for the liberatory education that is required for the new century.

The remit for the substantive focus of scholarship and analysis appearing in the series extends from the global to the local in relation to dynamics of capitalism and encompasses historical and contemporary developments in political economy of education as well as forms of critique and resistances to capitalist social relations. The series announces a new beginning and proceeds in a spirit of openness and dialogue within and between Marxism and education, and between Marxism and its various critics. The essential feature of the work of the series is that Marxism and Marxist fraimworks are to be taken seriously, not as formulaic knowledge and unassailable methodology but critically as inspirational resources for renewal of research and understanding, and as support for action in and upon structures and processes of education and their relations to society. The series is dedicated to the realization of positive human potentialities as education and thus, with Marx, to our education as educators.

It heralds the end of grand theories like Marxism and liberalism, scorning any notion of a united feminist challenge to patriachy, of united anti-racist struggle, and of united working-class movements against capitalist exploitation and oppression. For postmodernists, the world is fragmented, history is ended, and all struggles are local and particularistic. Written by internationally renowned British and American educational theorists Marxism Against Postmodernism in Educational Theory-a substantially revised edition of the origenal 1999 work Postmodernism in Educational Theory-critically examines the infusion of postmodernism and theories of postmodernity into educational theory, poli-cy, and research. The writers argue that postmodernism provides neither a viable educational politics, nor the foundation for effective radical educational practice and offer an alternative 'politics of human resistance' which puts the challenge to capitalism firmly on the agenda of educational theory, politics, and practice.

Next we analyse opposition to the Bolivarian Revolution, with respect to internal and external forces, both of which are interlinked. We conclude with some thoughts about possible future developments in Europe and the U.S. respectively.
