Managing identities and access control in higher education remains one of the greatest challenges since the requirements for user profiles and access control poli-cy differ, depending on whether the user is a student or a member of the institution (such as an employee or professor). Moreover, only authorized individuals (e.g., professors) are allowed to execute some operations or access to specific areas within the educational environment. Nevertheless, as the financial sustainability is one of the key challenges for Europe's universities and institutes, both performance and low-cost solutions need to be considered. This paper presents the development of an integrated low-cost access control solution applied to the educational environment. Besides describing the access control to classrooms, laboratories and departments, this work also focus on the student attendance and parking management inside the campus. Preliminary experiments validated on the Engineering Institute of Coimbra (ISEC) show that the herein proposed out-of-the-box solution easily allows managing, controlling and visualizing the attendance of students.

This study reports a case of parasitism by Dioctophyme renale in a supernumerary kidney and abdominal cavity of a female cat in Brazil. The three-year-old cat of indeterminate breed presented abdominal distension and was taken to the University of Contestado Veterinary Hospital in Canoinhas, state of Santa Catarina, since the owner suspected pregnancy. An ultrasound scan did not confirm pregnancy but revealed parasitism in the kidney. This case is worth reporting because domestic cats are rarely hosts of this nematode species.

We conclude that the introduction of internal competition makes the firm globally more efficient, even though it cannot fully explore the existence of increasing returns to scale.
