Background: Burning mouth syndrome is a chronic disorder that is characterized by a burning sensation and a normal clinical appearance of the oral mucosa. This condition often affects the health-related quality of life in patients. As such, the aim of this study was to compare the health-related quality of life of patients with BMS and healthy controls, using the validated Portuguese versions of the SF-36 and OHIP-49 questionnaires.

The aim of this study was to determine whether a high degree of dental caries severity is associated with the distal and proximal determinants of caries in a group of Brazilian adults aged 35 to 44 years. A population-based case-control study was conducted using two groups-a case group with high caries severity (DMFT ≥ 14) and a control group without high caries severity (DMFT < 14). The sample comprised adults from metropolitan Belo Horizonte, Brazil (180 cases and 180 controls matched for gender and age). The exam was performed by calibrated dentists using the DMFT index. The statistical analysis used the Mann-Whitney test and bivariate and multivariate logistic regression (the conditional backward stepwise method). The mean DMFT was 8.4 ± 3.9 in the control group and 20.1 ± 4.5 in the case group. High caries severity was associated with regular visits to the dentist, low income, use of private/supplementary dental service and not petitioning the authorities for community benefits. Background Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) represents a major complication in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (allo-HSCT) recipients. Although studies have been conducted concerning the investigation of cytokine polymorphisms in the development of acute GVHD (aGVHD), the contribution of recipients and donors as regards cytokine levels has not yet been thoroughly assessed.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic tumors exhibited variable biologica behaviors. Metallothionein (MT) is correlated with the cellular homeostasis of essential metals, cellular differentiation, and proliferation. The core goals of this study are (i) to report and to compare MT expression among benign epithelial odontogenic tumors; (ii) to correlate MT with cellular proliferation index; and (iii) to evaluate the influence of the inflammatory infiltrate on MT expression.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten cases of solid ameloblastomas (SABs), 4 squamous odontogenic tumors (SOTs), 5 adenomatoid odontogenic tumors (AOTs), and 3 calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumors (CEOTs) were subjected to immunohistochemical to anti-MT, anti-Ki-67, and anti-PCNA. Statistical analysis was performed using BioEstat â 4.0. RESULTS: Metallothionein staining was found to be the highest in the SABs (93.1%), followed by SOTs (52.9%), AOTs (38.4%), and CEOTs (0%). MT staining exhibited statistically significant differences between the SABs and the SOTs (P = 0.0047) and the AOTs (P = 0.0022). A weak-to-strong positive correlation between IMT and IK or IP was observed in SABs and SOTs, whereas a strong negative correlation was observed in AOTs. No differences in IMT, IK, and IP were observed between inflammation groups A and B. CONCLUSIONS: The increased MT expression observed in the SABs might be correlated with clinical behavior (local invasiveness and high rate of recurrence). In the SABs and SOTs, MT plays a role in the stimulation of cellular proliferation. In contrast, MT can inhibit cellular proliferation in the AOT. The IMT, IK, and IP are not affected by inflammation.

The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate the influence of low level laser therapy (LLLT) in alleviating pain caused by micro-marsupialization and the healing of oral ranulas and selected mucoceles. Eleven patients underwent micro-marsupialization treatment associated with LLLT. The patients were irradiated with a 660nm continuous wave from an indium-gallium-arsenidephosphorous (InGaAsP) diode laser, at 100 mW, with a spot size on the tissue surface of 0.0283 cm 2 (irradiance 0 3.53 W/cm 2 ). Irradiation was carried out immediately following micro-marsupialization treatment, as well as at 24, 48, and 72 h post-micro-marsupialization. All treated oral ranulas and selected mucoceles presented clinical healing. No evidence of recurrence could be identified during a mean of 11.0-month follow-up period. The use of InGaAsP diode lasers, within the parameters tested, appears to present a good alternative treatment to reduce pain and heal oral ranulas and selected mucoceles associated with micro-marsupialization.

There are a limited number of studies correlating the different stages of dendritic cells (DC) maturation with cytokines in individuals presented chronic periodontitis (CP). The aim of the study was to evaluate the correlation among the expression of IL-2, IL-10, IL-4, IL-6, IFN-, TNF-a, and IL-17A with the presence of DC and mild-moderate or advanced CP. Gingival samples were obtained from 24 individuals with CP and six samples of normal mucosa (NM) overlapping third molar for controls of the levels of cytokines. Periodontal examination was performed. Immunohistochemical staining was carried out, revealing CD1a+ immature, Fator XIIIa+ immature, and CD83+ mature DCs. The inflammatory infiltrate was counted, and the cytokines were measured by flow cytometry. Densities of DCs and inflammatory infiltrate, cytokines, subtypes of CP, and clinical periodontal parameters were correlated and compared. IL-6 expression was correlated positively with the increased numbers of CD1a+ immature DCs. Levels of IL-2, TNF-a, IFN-, IL-10, and IL-17A were increased when compared with NM. The percentage of sites with clinical attachment level (CAL).3 were positively correlated with densities of inflammatory infiltrate and negatively correlated with densities of immature DCs. IL-6 can contribute to the increase of the immature DCs in the CP. Higher levels of IL-2, TNF-a, IFN-, IL-10, and IL-17A cytokines were observed in CP. Higher densities of inflammatory infiltrate as well as lower densities of immature DCs can result in a more severe degree of human CP. Assessment of the Corroboration of Documents Issued During the Dental Treatment and Radiograph Filing in the Health Records of the State University of Montes Claros (Unimontes) in Montes Claros, MG, Brazil Objective: To evaluate the health records of the dental clinics of the State University of Montes Claros (Unimontes), in Montes Claros, MG, Brazil, concerning the presence of copies of documents issued during the clinical treatment as well as assess the the filing of dental radiographs. Method: The data for this study were collected from all health records of patients treated in the 1st semester 2005 of the disciplines from the 4th to 9th periods of the Dental Course of Unimontes. The data were collected by a single duly trained examiner. The descriptive statistics was performed using the SPSS for Windows v. 11.0 software. Results: Eight hundred and eighty one dental records were reviewed and 69.5% of them presented copies of documents. Among all the health records, 4% had written professional instructions, 41% had drug prescriptions, 22% had referral documents to other health professionals, 10% had health certificates and 37.5% had other documents, such as diet daily record, user evaluation questionnaires, requests for lab tests, surgical planning and results of lab tests. Dental radiographs were encountered in 72% of the health records and 69% of them were filed in appropriate paper cards, 43% were not dated and 58% were unidentified. Conclusion: Most of the health records presented copies of documents and a high percentage of the radiographs were not correctly filed. Objetivo: Avaliar os prontuários de saúde das Clínicas Odontológicas da Universidade Estadual de Montes Claros (Unimontes), Minas Gerais, Brasil, com relação à presença de cópias de documentos emitidos durante o atendimento clínico, assim como avaliar o arquivamento das radiografias odontológicas. Método: Foram incluídos todos os prontuários de pacientes atendidos no 1º semestre de 2005 em disciplinas do 4º ao 9º período do curso de graduação em Odontologia da Unimontes. Os dados foram coletados por um único examinador devidamente calibrado. A análise estatística descritiva foi realizada no programa SPSS for Windows versão 11.0. Resultados: Analisaram-se oitocentos e oitenta e um (881) prontuários odontológicos, sendo encontradas cópias de documentos em 69,5% desses. De todos os prontuários, quatro por cento (4%) possuíam orientações profissionais, quarenta e um por cento (41%) prescrições medicamentosas, vinte e dois por cento (22%) encaminhamentos para outros profissionais de saúde, dez por cento (10%) atestados de saúde, e 37,5% possuíam outros documentos, como diário dietético, questionário de avaliação do usuário, solicitação de exames, planejamento cirúrgico e resultados de exames laboratoriais. As radiografias odontológicas foram encontradas em 72% dos prontuários de saúde, sendo que 69% estavam arquivadas em cartões apropriados, 43% não estavam datadas e 58% não identificadas. Conclusão: A maioria dos prontuários apresentava cópias de documentos e que um elevado percentual de radiografias não apresentava o arquivamento correto.
