This paper is focused on the impact of the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria on the child’s right to education. The impact of armed conflict on the child’s right to education is discussed in the coIntext of the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria. The article concludes by assessing how the Nigerian government, in line with its obligations under international law, has lived up to its obligations to ensure the realization of the child’s right to education in the face of the insurgency in the North-eastern part of the country. Concrete recommendations are made to the Nigerian government with regard to addressing the impact of the insurgency on the rights of the child.        

This case note focuses on the justiciability as well as the impact of corruption on the realisation of the right to basic education. Through an assessment of the decision of the ECOWAS Court in SERAP v. Nigeria, it emphasises the role of states in ensuring that corrupt activities of government officials or third parties do not affect the enjoyment of the right. It equally emphasises the role of the Nigerian courts in ensuring a justiciable right to education.

The important process of meaningful engagement with persons affected by eviction has been greatly under-utilised in Nigeria and this leaves the victims in a dire situation as their yearnings are hardly met. Having regard to the jurisprudence of the South African Constitutional Court on meaningful engagement, a critical evaluation of the case of Badia East eviction in Lagos, Nigeria is considered highlighting the flaws in the engagement process adopted. It is shown that the process of meaningful engagement with affected persons before an eviction occurs has the capacity to mitigate the human rights abuses that could arise from the process.

In Nigeria, a person when alive often has the freedom to dispose of his property to whomever he chooses. However, when he dies, limits have been put upon that freedom by legislation in some states of the country, when he has made a will concerning the disposition of his estate. These restrictions to testamentary freedom are often justified on cultural, religious, moral and social grounds. This paper appraises these limits to testamentary freedom in Nigeria, while comparing it with the positions in England, Ghana and South Africa. The question as to whether or not the limitations to testamentary freedom are justified is also considered in the paper. The paper finds that some limitations whilst worthy ideals and thus justified, could bring about unrealistic and impracticable results while some totally take away freedom from the testator. The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was founded over forty years ago with the basic objective of fostering unity and the spirit of brotherliness among all citizens of Nigeria through bridging of the gaps created by ethnicity. However, the usefulness of the NYSC is now been called into question. This paper reviews the NYSC Act and makes recommendations for reforms that will reposition the service corps towards contributing to the sustainable economic development of Nigeria. In so doing, the paper also examines the provisions of Bills pending before the National Assembly to determine if the proposals in the Bills are adequate. The paper discusses, among others, the welfare of corps members. It proposes, among others, a review of corps members’ allowances, establishment of a corps members’ insurance scheme and collaboration between the NYSC and other agencies for the purpose of enabling corps members to be tools for economic development in Nigeria.
