Purpose: To determine the antimicrobial activity and chemical constituents of ethyl acetate extract of Citrullus lanatus seeds. Methods: Antimicrobial activity of the ethyl acetate extract of the seeds of C. lanatus was evaluated against Staphylococus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Bacillus subtilis NCTC8236, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 10145 and Candida albicans ATCC 24433 using standard microbiological method. Chemical constituents of the extract were determined with Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC MS) systems. Results: An oily, yellowish orange coloured extract with a yield of 18.7 % was obtained. The extract inhibited the growth of all test microorganisms at minimum inhibitory concentration range of 0.313-2.5 mg/mL and minimum bactericidal concentration of 0.313-5 mg/mL. GC MS profile of the extract showed the presence of oleic acid (31.22 %), saturated fatty acid (23.85 %) and gamma tocopherol (8.79 %). Other organic compounds accounted for 36.16 % of the extract Conclusion: Ethyl acetate extract of the seeds of Citrullus lanatus has antimicrobial effect against some Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria as well as C. albicans. Twenty-one compounds including fatty acids, hexamethyl-2-ethylacridine, gamma tocopherol and methylphthalate have been identified in the seeds.

The study of bacterial flora implicated in patients with recurrent tonsillitis in a Teaching, Tertiary Institution was carried out; to identify the main organisms responsible for tonsillitis, their sensitivity and resistance to antibiotics. At tonsillectomy,swabs of Surface and core tonsillar materials were taken and cultured, bacteria isolated were identified and their antibiogram determined using standard laboratory techniques. The most frequently isolated organisms were Staphylococus aureus (70%) which was found to be the principal causative agent across all ages. This study evaluated the antimicrobial property of the aqueous extract of Citrullus lanatus (watermelon) seeds and its concentration-effect relationship (time-kill studies) on typed bacterial and fungal strains. Crude powdered seeds of Citrullus lanatus were extracted by maceration with water. Antimicrobial assay of the aqueous extracts was determined against Bacillus subtilis (NCTC 8236), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 10145), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), and Candida albicans (ATCC 24433) using standard microbiological methods. Nosocomial infections are infections that patients acquire while receiving treatment for other health conditions within a healthcare setting or facility. This study aims to determine the level of awareness of healthcare providers on the role sphygmomanometers play in the spread of nosocomial infections and to isolate microorganisms in sphygmomanometer cuffs used in healthcare facilities. A structured, self-administered questionnaire was designed and administered to healthcare practitioners of two tertiary hospitals and community pharmacies in Benin City. Microbial contamination of sphygmomanometer cuffs was investigated following the standard isolation and identification techniques for microorganisms. A total of 217 responded; 27.2% pharmacists, 33.2% doctors and 39.6% nurses. The majority (50.2%) were between the ages of 20 – 30 years. 65.4% were females and 51.6% were single. Purpose: The antimicrobial activity of the 90 % ethanol extract of the aerial parts of Sida acuta Burm. F. (Malvaceae) was investigated in other to verify its claimed ethno medicinal use in the treatment of microbial infections. Method: The antimicrobial activity of the extract was tested against standard strains and clinical isolates of some aerobic bacteria and a fungus using the Agar well diffusion method. Commercial antibiotics were used as positive reference standards to determine the sensitivity of the strains. Results: The extracts showed significant inhibitory activity against standard strains and clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, clinical isolates of Bacillus subtilis and Streptococcus faecalis. The MIC values obtained using the Agar-dilution test ranged from 5.0 mg/ml. -10.0 mg/ml. Neither the concentrated extract nor its dilutions inhibited Esherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans Conclusion: The results demonstrate that the crude extract of the aerial parts of Sida acuta has a narrow spectrum of activity and suggest that it may be useful in the treatment of infections caused by Gram positive aerobic bacteria.

The antimicrobial activity of the ethanol extract of Kaempferia parviflora was tested against human pathogens, including bacteria, yeast and dermatophyte fungi, using the agar disc diffusion. The ethanol extract exhibited strong antifungal activity against dermatophytes with clear zone values from 10.7-19.8 mm at concentration of 2 mg/disc. However, ethanol extract showed no activities against all bacteria and yeast tested. The ethanol extract and seven compounds of K. parviflora were further studied using agar dilution method against dermatophytes. It was found that the ethanol extract of K. parviflora exhibited strong anti-fungal activity against Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Microsporum gypseum with MIC values of 62.5, 125 and 250 µg/ml, respectively. Only compound 6 (3, 5, 7-trimethoxyflavone) present in this extract showed appreciable anti-fungal activity with MIC values of 250 µg/ml against these three dermatophytes.
