Dutch-belted rabbits (n=8) were vitrectomized followed by subretinal injection of 2.4 mg/ml PB (285 mOsm) and 1.5 mg/ml TB (312 mOsm); balanced salt solution (BSS) (300 mOsm) served as the control. Animals were examined 6, 12, and 24 hr and 14 days after the procedure by fluorescein angiography (FA) and indirect ophthalmoscopy; for retinal toxicity, histologic evaluation studies were performed by light and transmission electron microscopy. FA examination demonstrated window defects suggestive of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) atrophy in positions of subretinal TB injection, but this was not observed after subretinal injection of PB or BSS. Histologic evaluation disclosed only minimal abnormalities on the photoreceptor outer segment (POS) after subretinal injection of BSS during all follow-up. Subretinal injection of PB caused POS and photoreceptor inner s...

Twelve premature babies with retinopathy of prematurity grades I, II and III underwent dilated fundus examination and optical coherence tomography evaluation. In all thirteen eyes of the twelve premature patients optical coherence tomography revealed a condensed retinal pigmented epithelial layer in the macular-foveal area shown by increased reflectivity. In these eyes the retinal layers were not well differentiated. Foveal depression was clearly evident in 23%. In premature patients with retinopathy of prematurity, optical coherence tomography revealed poorly differentiated layers in the macular region with increased reflectivity in retinal pigmented epithelial-choriocapillaris zone.

A complete ocular examination as well as color fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, fluorescein angiography, microperimetry, full-field electroretinography, and multifocal electroretinography were performed and repeated 1 month later. The patient experienced subjective and objective improvement of visual acuity with a decrease in intraretinal and subretinal fluid. Microperimetric improvement also occurred. Electroretinographic changes were noted from baseline to the 30-day follow-up. No adverse events were observed at any time point. Ziv-aflibercept demonstrated short-term safety and efficacy after intravitreal administration for neovascular macular degeneration.

Seventeen healthy preterm infants with normal fundus were recruited and divided in two age groups: 3-week group, nine infants with mean adjusted age at test = 2.67±0.92 weeks and 8-week group, eight infants with mean adjusted age at test = 7.92 ±1.72 weeks. Full-field ERGs were obtained with a Burian-Allen bipolar contact lens electrode from the anesthetized cornea in one eye, through a fully dilated pupil after 30 min of dark adaptation. The standard ISCEV protocol was used and the following responses were recorded: rod, maximal, oscillatory potentials, cone and 30 Hz flicker. Median values and 1st, 5th, 95th and 99th percentiles for amplitude and implicit time are described for both age groups. There was statistically larger amplitude for 30 Hz flicker (t = 2 191; p = 0 046) and for cone response (t = 2 307; p = 0 044) in the 8-week-old group. Statistically shorter implicit times were found in 8-week group for rod response (t = 3 219; p = 0 015), cone response (t = 2 839; p = 0 016) and flicker response (t = 3 326; p = 0 005). Shortening of implicit time was evident in the older group of preterms and this finding is consistent with other maturational studies confirming the anatomical and functional development of the photoreceptors. Medians and ranges between the 1st and 99th and the 5th and 95th percentiles can be used as a baseline for future comparisons with infants with ROP.
