The essay argues that in the twentieth century North-American literature names often become both the locus where individual identity and social expectations clash, and the means through which the author tries to dislocate old myths and introduce new ones into the culture. Starting from this, the essay examines Hilda Doolittle's modernist novels and poems in order to highlight the many ways in which she explores multiple authorial identities and the mythmaking potential of names, acronyms and heteronyms.

Immaginiamo di trovarci in una sala cinematografica dove si sta proiettando un film ambientato nel primo Novecento italiano, in un momento cruciale della nostra storia, finito nel sangue. La storia racconta di poeti, critici e traduttori, di poesia, di idee e di parole prese, reimmaginate, assimilate, tradite e trasformate. È una storia che vede l'internazionalismo nutrire i nazionalismi che, precipitando la prima guerra mondiale, chiuderanno un'epoca solo per aprirne una più tremenda. I protagonisti non sono, come in Midnight in Paris (2011) di Woody Allen, Gertrude Stein e i famosi espatriati americani nella Parigi degli Anni Venti, ma alcuni scrittori della avanguardie moderniste italiane negli anni a cavallo fra Otto e Novecento, in perpetuo moto fra Milano, Firenze, Parigi, e Roma.

Centering on Gamberale’s translations of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, between1887 and 1907, this essay explores the way in which transnationalism and translation ended up nourishing both early twentieth-century Italian literary avant-gardes and political nationalism. Campana, Papini, Aleramo, the Futurists were  all indebted to Whitman’s ‘free’ verse and ‘free’ man, and to the image of America as the land of pragmatism, modernity, and freedom. Papini and the Futurists, however,  translated Whitman’s American man and woman into the Nietzschean Ubermensch redifined as the “virile new man” at the core of Italian nationalist ideology.

This is an essay in three parts. The first reconstructs Giovanni Papini's encounter with William James and his contribution to transatlantic Pragmatism as part of an intellectual action aimed at modernizing Italian culture and making it more international. It argues that Papini's early reading of the two volumes of Walt Whitman's Canti scelti shaped his own brand of pragmatism. The second part centers on Papini's 1908 essay, "Walt Whitman", and his cultural and very influential interpretation of Whitman. Apparently reviewing Luigi Gamberale's Foglie d'erba (1907), Papini's not only pragmatically used Whitman's poetry to show Italian artists how to write modern literature, but created an image of the poet/Whitman as a hybrid, avant-gardist and pragmatist, Übermensch. Through Whitman, Papini also participated in the cultural debate of the time, when Nietzsche and his Zarathustra were quoted, interpreted and used for their own aims by feminists...

Walt Whitman's image of the poetic work as a tiny ship ferried through the ocean of time is associated in the essay to that of the translator and interpreter as passeur, in the double sense of the French word. Translators as passeurs provide their linguistic and cultural tools and sensibility as vessels capable of trans-fer(ry)ing texts from shore to shore. While, for George Steiner, translators are performers who re-enact a text, I argue that translators not only perform a text but take sides, and assume responsibility for the life they transfer. In my essay, I represent the landing of Whitman's Leaves of Grass on Italian shores as a migratory process helped by a number of willing and unwilling passeurs, to begin with the British Pre-Raphaelite critic W.M. Rossetti. Enrico Nencioni, Whitman's first Italian passeur, evidenced the epochal value of the American man and informed critics of the ways his modern poetry could contribute to the shaping of a new cultural identity for the recently unified nation. Nencioni's essays and translations evidenced, as well, the transnational and transcultural scope of Whitman's Leaves by adopting the political lens of Giuseppe Mazzini, and the classical and contemporary critical tools he could command. RÉSUMÉ. L'image whitmanienne de l'oeuvre poétique comme un petit navire qui traverse l'océan du temps est dans cet essai associée à celle du traducteur comme passeur, au double sens du mot français. Les traducteurs comme passeurs apportent leurs outils linguistiques et culturels et leur sensibilité comme des navires capables de transférer des textes d'une rive à l'autre. Alors que pour George Steiner, les traducteurs sont des interprètes qui rejouent un texte, je soutiens que les traducteurs ne se contentent pas d'interpréter un texte mais prennent parti et assument la responsabilité de la vie qu'ils transfèrent. Dans mon essai, je représente le débarquement des Leaves of Grass sur les côtes italiennes comme un processus migratoire aidé par un certain nombre de passeurs, pour commencer par le critique britannique W.M. Rossetti. Enrico Nencioni, le premier passeur italien de Whitman, a mis sa valeur en évidence et a informé les critiques sur la façon dont sa poésie moderne pouvait contribuer à la formation d'une nouvelle identité culturelle pour la nation récemment unifiée. Les essais de Nencioni ont également mis en évidence la portée transnationale et transculturelle des Leaves en adoptant l'optique politique de Giuseppe Mazzini, ainsi que les outils critiques classiques et contemporains qu'il pouvait maîtriser.

Credo sia veramente difficile immaginare, per chi non ne abbia avuto esperienza diretta come autore o curatore di volumi, quanto questa collana, al pari della sorella maggiore (i 'Poeti cristiani'), debba all'apporto, costante e discreto, di Antonino Dessì. Chi si è trovato più volte a condividere il percorso necessario alla pubblicazione di un libro ha potuto apprezzare come in lui la profonda dottrina, la conoscenza non comune del greco, del latino e di altro trovino un naturale contrappeso nella sensibilità, nella maniera delicata di proporre le osservazioni, nel modo garbato e gentile di segnalare l'errore, quasi scusandosi per averlo trovato. Delle due collane-la verde e la viola-, almeno negli ultimi quattro lustri, questa è forse l'unica pagina ad essere consegnata alle stampe senza essere prima passata sotto il suo occhio vigile. Conoscendolo bene, so che non avrebbe dato la sua approvazione. Tra pochi giorni, il 27 di questo mese, infatti, i Carmelitani Scalzi del Convento di San Torpé in Pisa festeggeranno Padre Dessì in occasione del suo ottantesimo compleanno: a me ed agli altri amici che condividono da tempo le fatiche delle due imprese editoriali è venuto quindi naturale, violando la sua innata modestia, dedicare a lui questo volume, pegno di stima, di amicizia, di gratitudine. The present contribution wishes to recover and renovate the concept of humanism starting from a discussion of Robert Viscusi’s ellis island, a literary text which features both as a printed book and as an online work, digital and fluid, available at ellisisland.com. By juxtaposing Viscusi’s work to those by other American poets who have worked on and forged a new American epic, as well as to classical literature, the essay locates Viscusi’s work within a poetic (and epic) genealogy in which his text not only figures, but also opens the genre to artistic and theoretical re-framings. Completing the program that Walt Whitman began in Leaves of Grass, Viscusi’s experimental ellis island merges literary traditions, languages, and forms with a fluidity that recalls the lapping gait of the ocean. In this sense, his poetic project realizes a new Italian American epic by opening the dynamic journey of the Italian migration to the US to a new reader, digital and plurilingual, living in the digital age.

The essay explores and reconstructs the position from which Adrienne Rich is writing at the end of the twentieth century. While concentrating on “Emily Carr,” hinge-poem of Rich’s Your Native Land, Your Life (1986), the present contribution wishes to foreground Rich’s own confrontation with the Canadian painter, in order to investigate how both women use their own art to speak of, dwell into, and recreate their personal rapport with the places and spaces of the American land. The essay will also tour the evolution of Rich’s poetics in relation to visual art.
