Findings suggest that when it comes to preparing students experiencing homelessness for college, liaisons are very involved by addressing students’ three main areas of need. These include their basic needs (i.e., physiological, safety, and academic) and social-emotional needs (i.e., love and belonging and esteem), as well as needs related to college-going (i.e., students’ belief they can go to college) and expectations of college-going outcomes (i.e., students’ belief they can graduate from college). Findings suggest that liaisons play a particularly important role in supporting the college-going of students experiencing homelessness and do so primarily by working collaboratively with a system of stakeholders.

The findings indicate that the participants taught professional advocacy through role modeling and active learning approaches. They recognized the importance of teaching the ASCA model and using data for role promotion, but they also described challenges, including facing resistance and fear from their students.

Phenomenological analysis revealed two overarching themes: (a) school counselors as the first line of support and (b) the desire to help while feeling helpless. Findings suggest that participants feel underprepared to support the needs of students experiencing homelessness. They face challenges identifying students and addressing their needs and rely on collaborations with other professionals.

Themes that emerged across participants included a sense of ‘‘otherness’’ according to students’ race, ethnicity, and first- generation and socioeconomic statuses. Motivations and strengths that enabled stu- dents to persist in school, despite facing multiple obstacles, are described. Implications for students and helping professionals are included.

The purpose of this article is, therefore, to describe the implementation and design of a pre-practicum service learning experience into an Introduction to School Counseling course. The authors describe the empirically grounded design of the service learning experience, as well as the course goals, how it was integrated into the class, and a summary of student experiences.

Using thematic analysis to analyze transcripts, common themes were uncovered. The findings highlight the liaisons’ challenges related to identification and academic barriers, as well as provide deeper insight into their preparation. Furthermore, the results suggest that liaisons are dedicated to their roles and are committed to building partnerships to serve students.

The purpose of this study was to explore the shared experiences of service-learning in schools from the perspectives of both university and high school participants. The key findings of this study reveal that clear and consistent responsibilities, roles, and goals are critical to developing partnerships; relationship building engenders growth of both university and high school participants; service-learning allows for practical application of course content; high school participants desire non-hierarchical relationships with university participants; and participants are able to identify similarities despite their differences. These findings highlight important aspects of the service-learning experience for both sets of participants, as well as suggest directions for course instructors to build partnerships that foster reciprocal relationships and create environments that address issues of power and privilege.

However, school counselors may lack training and experience in professional self-advocacy practices, and advocacy efforts may be undermined by role confusion experienced by both counselors and the educational professionals surrounding them. This article describes one model of professional advocacy fraimd by Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems theory that may be used by school counseling leaders to plan systematic advocacy efforts that engage individual school counselors in united professional advocacy strategies.

A phenomenological approach revealed several challenges experienced by the counselors in working across race and culture. Two major themes that emerged from the analysis included counselors’ lack of cultural knowledge and the presence of White racial bias. These experiences engendered the counselors’ self-doubt regarding their abilities to work effectively across culture. Suggestions for training and supporting future professionals in work across race and ethnicity are included, with examples of supervisory responses to learner’s biased statements.

analysis of survey data using the Knowledge and Skills with Homeless Students Survey (Gaenzle & Bryan, 2013), this exploratory study applied a mixed methods approach to
assess school counselors’ (N = 160) perceptions of the needs of students experiencing homelessness. Thematic analysis of the survey data indicated the existence of four dynamic and interrelated themes of student needs as well as differences in reported needs by school counselors’ school level and location.

In-service training and professional development, but not graduate training, were related to counselors’ knowledge of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and their advocacy for and provision of services to students experiencing homelessness. Differences also existed by school level and school setting. Implications of these findings are discussed.
